Haven't played it in many years so I don't know the current situation but Eternal Lands sounds like what you're looking for.
It's an isometric clicker MMO RPG with a very small community, not sure how many are still active after all this time. There were constantly around 400 active players on the servers in the evening (since most have jobs).
Sure, it's outdated from a graphics perspective but I've met wonderful people in that game. Interaction was constant. Rolled with a guild and we had events where we would all start gathering materials to stock our armory for newcomers. The best armor and weapons in the game dropped from rare mobs but could also be crafted at a hefty price. We had parties, weddings, guild wars, all sorts of events. Good times.
I repeat I haven't played it in years so I don't know how much has changed but it's worth a shot if you're into those things.

actually, no one mentioned StarWars The Old Republic.
good crafting system. very usefull. for all types of gear. it is almost always better then what you get etc...
very good story, and nice raids.
plus, it's free, but i advice to buy something once. check the sub options to see what i'm talking about

The Pay-to-Have fun aspect of is pisses me off. I don't mind paying once in a while but it limits you way too much if you don't pay.

Tried it after Star Wars Galaxies was shut down and many friends played it, but it wasn't the same for me. The story is well written, but partially over the top (you are THE hero). I rarely needed any crafted items while levelling up. It had lesser diversification options, no chat bubbles, no interesting space part, housing wasn't integrated at that time. Maybe it has been improved by now, but without the old community I'm lacking to get into it again.

never did Galaxies. but, it has everything at the moment, except chat bubles, what?
as for community? you can't live in the past ;)

Yeah, I've read that there's housing now, but didn't look out for the details yet. Is the space part interesting? Originally it was only planned as some sort of rail shooter?!
Well, being more a role player than PVPer or raider the community is very important. Furthermore I'm not willing to invest that much time again, even more when noticing what I had missed in those 6 years of Galaxies. If I'd live in the past, I would play one of those emulators. ;-)

space is sort of rail shooter. maybe a bit more, but yeah. rail...
my advice, run and don't start another MMO if you know you get that addicted.

Addicted? The first year, ok, have to admit that, but after that it was ok. I also had tried other MMOs (Star Trek Online, Everquest II, Lords of the Rings Online, The Secret World, All Points Bulletin) and it never became that bad again. What I meant with "missing" was less related to real life, but more to single-player games and other hobbies.
In the end everything can lead to an addiction. A friend of mine from SWG, who made her thesis in psychology at that time, stated once that a new love is most probably the mightiest drug and I tend to agree on this.

you could mb play some baldurs gate / divinity / icewind dale / old nwn or sth like that with a friend. I have tried quite a lot of mmos and I can't remember anything close to what you want. I mean there is what you want, but it works like wow or worth. I'd even say, that in terms of PvE content wow is probably one of the best ones.
I could mb recommend ultima online =) the oldest one.

I've played just about all characterbased-mmo's ever, and WoW only had what you were looking for in the early years.
Even though it was and still is a great game, i feel like it's falling short on your specific requirements.
ESO is the only MMO that still forces you to at least find an active guild with an auction house.
I haven't tried EVE online personally but I heard it's pretty hardcore too.

I used to play parallel kingdoms on my phone. its taken down now though. was the most memorable mmo ive played

I still occasionally think back on Dark Age of Camelot. It was pretty good but went downhill rapidly after Mythic got sold to EA. Yeah...
Eve, well, it's as social as you make it, and almost everything is player-made. It's pretty brutal though.

So I kinda hate MMO games because they feel like bad singleplayer games with people running around like zombies most of the time.
I want to know if there is any MMO game where the social aspect is used more than in other games. For example having a profession system where alchemists would brew potions to supply a team going into a raid or a blacksmith player that makes armors for others and stuff. I tried WoW for the first time last week but I'm disappointed in the profession system, everything you craft is totally useless compared to found loot. Also shops seem super useless, I never used food or drinks (and even potions seem useless as you level faster than you use them).
TL;DR -> Is there any MMO game with useful professions and shops where interactions with other players really matter?
Conclusion: Oh so I guess I'll give WoW a bit more time and ill try out Guild Wars, Revelation Online and Uncharted Waters (I would try ESO again but I found it super boring alone)
Edit: Anyone wants to play WoW or ESO with me? :3
