No :( at close to 100% it stopped and said "Something Happened: Something Happened"
I'm not even joking.... it legitimately said that.

Eh I don't do anything on my pc that I'd care about microsoft seeing. So they want gigs of data about me looking for funny cat photos? they're welcome to it, I'd prefer the free upgrade to keeping my cat browsing habits secret.

They might log all the data, but just consider how much data they'll end up having. Do you really think they have -any- interest in spying on you?

As for ad targeting, I'm actually in favour of it. I'd much rather see ads that might be somewhat relevant to me than completely random things. If collecting my data helps microsoft to adapt to what I like and what I do, all power to them.

You're doing it wrong. You're of the ilk that own such atrocious headwear, and one whom owns several variants of the trilby no doubt.

I do however own a top hat and a monocle.

It's not like there'll be a human being browsing through your data. Data is searchable and analyzed for patterns etc. There are MILLIONS of texts on "Why you should care about privacy" and "I have nothing to hide" out there, but here is a short one and to the point: http://opensource.org/node/711

Ah, but look at the recent freedom won by software known to 'spy' with you. Uprisings in the middle east, the release of information by snowden about just what the american governments been up to, even allowing people to further push gay rights through the use of blog platforms like tumble and search engines like Google, which all 'spy' on you as well. I know there are advantages and disadvantages to it, I've read a lot of the stuff and I briefly was working as an ethical hacker for a big company, but I think the positives outweigh the negatives.

Yes, if you're getting something for free, it means you're not getting the commodity, you are the commodity. Yes, sometimes it goes too far. But with Microsoft, do you really think that they'll do anything to shoot themselves in the foot? The world is watching them too closely, tracking exactly what data is taken, that the only time I can imagine them sharing it is when there's good proof that it would help in a criminal investigation. Freedom is one thing, creating a space for illegal activities to grow without risk of identification is bad. Isn't it a good thing if it could, for example, identify people uploading/downloading child pornography? Or reveal someone being brainwashed to extremism, while there's still a chance to save that life as well as any they could take in the future? There is a line where it goes to far, but honestly, I trust that Microsoft won't take it there.

There's no black/white world. Its impossible to be entirely against any data being taken on you (unless you live off the grid and don't interact with anyone) and I doubt anyone is saying having their privacy invaded is a good thing. There are benefits to it sometimes though, and there are always choices. The tin foil hat gang can use Linux all they want, but as soon as you use the internet all your data is tracked anyway.

Hmm, good thing you are aware of all that, then. :) I agree with you that it's not black or white. BTW, I upgraded it on my laptop. But it looked like you didn't mind to give away ALL your privacy. Like you said now, there are acceptable things and not acceptable things. On Windows 10, for example, I think they are being honest when they tell you what they'll do with the data, but there are some controversial (and dumb) settings enabled by default on Windows 10. Some of them I could disable when I was installing it, but others I could only get to know by browsing through the settings. For example, one that's easy to understand, the WiFi sense, that shares your WiFi connection info (not the password itself, but allows the receiver to connect to your network and use it) with all your contacts... Really? That's very bad.

Ah, I did turn off some settings, but honestly even I could turn off none of them I would still use windows 10.

I can see wifi sense being terrible if you're on a laptop in a crowded place or whatever, especially if you're at school or something with all of your classmates added, but since my desktop lives at home, if any of my contacts were close enough to connect to my network then it just saves me giving them the code and going through multiple stages of them inputting it wrong or trying to connect to the wrong network.

How safe is the media creation tool?

Make sure you start the upgrade first, or it won't whitelist your system for activation. :) I installed through the update tool, then did a clean install with the media creation tool to cut down on the bloated files and it worked fine. Its an official Microsoft solution.

The download page says:

"If you will be installing the operating system for the first time, you will need your Windows product key (xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx)."

You can't use a windows 7 or 8 key to do this. The only 2 ways you can get that key is to purchase the windows 10 key from microsoft and then install the download in the OP's link. OR, you have to take your legit windows 7/8 and get it updated to windows 10, and then run window's activation tool to convert your windows your windows 7/8 key into a windows 10 key so that you can then use that key for the clean install using the link in the OP's post.

so after taking your win 7 legit key, we can't use it anymore and u would be stuck in win 10?

That, i do not know. But it would not surprise me if that's the case. However, they may understand some people dont want to keep windows 10 after they use it, and for whatever reason want to revert, but i wouldn't want to test that to find out (i have no keys to test anyway, no windows)

Is it safer to use the media creation tools than the reserved windows update?

Tested Windows 10 Pro release, verdict: Looks great and performance is good, but the upgrade is not worth it yet (until several compatibilities are improved and bugs fixed, updates released), back to Windows 8.1 Pro for at least 2 months.
Most dedicated drivers for Windows 10 are not released yet, Sandboxie has some issues, most programs work, yet some of them have imperfect compatibility for now.
