Okay so I've decided to finally start playing Final Fantasy, I don't know what's taken me so long as it looks like my kinda game and it seem extremely popular.
But I have a problem.

I very much like to completely understand the story and everything that is said, so will I have to start with the earliest Final Fantasy game possible, or would it be acceptable to start with the ones on Steam?
Which also brings me to my next question, is there actually 14 Final Fantasy games? If so why, on Steam, does it start with three, then there's a fourth, then just a gap to 13?
EDIT: Since been corrected and there is in fact 7 and 8

EDIT EDIT:
Okay so now I understand that I can start on any number of Final Fantasy (Take one's followed with extra numbers eg. XIII - 2)
So now I ask, what one do I start with? I have a PC, Android phone (Note 3 N9005), probably have my old DS lying somewhere and my 360, so only ones I could play on one of them please!

The whole of Final Fantasy confuses me, and I haven't even played a single game.
Please help me out here.

Luckily every game has different stories (not counting the sequels and stuff like that). I found myself enjoying a lot 7, 8 and 9, the most famous ones. 13 in my case started pretty well and the became boring as hell. Also played 3 and 4 but for me they are kinda generic japanese rpgs unlike the others that have a more unique story.

Start with X-2, and only play X-2 nonstop until you 100%. Twice.

{{Personally, I would start with either IX, X or XII. But you don't own a ps. So.}}

I choose Tactics and VI! (Android)

FFXIII's not a bad game either - but it's extremely linear. They went for a cinematic approach - it's all about the story and the 'epic factor'. There's very little else to it, albeit the battle system does get pretty good towards the end. It may also be a bit tough to get into if you've no previous experience with FF, as there's a lot of information dumped on you on top of the usual FF lore (crystals, summons and so on). It's a very controversial title. Still. I enjoyed it and I wouldn't dismiss it.

Start with the old version of FF III.

The new version despite being way more modern, is also considered the most difficult version of the game, so if you are not familiar with FF it will not be a good choice to start with this.

You should start with the old version of FF III, or if graphics are an issue to you then FF IX, or FF X.
