Which is for the best, Steam version of that game suxx, you just have to check the reviews of the game.
The good thing is if you have Twitch prime, you should already have a free key for the base game, add this and you're good :)

Actually I just checked it for a friend. I already playing it on Steam and I think the otherwise. It's the same game and nothing sucks. Only con is if you bought it on Steam, you have to buy expansion packs on Steam too. For me, Steam version is better because I don't use credit cards. I can pay it on Steam.

You can pay crysta with paypal then use crysta to pay for your monthly fee :)

You can buy Crysta with paypal under your square enix account, they can be used to pay FFXIV and FFXI subscription as well as objects in the mog station shop.
There isn't any benefit per se, I have no idea why they don't allow direct paiement with paypal, but you can indeed pay crystal with paypal then use said crysta for your FFXIV sub.
Maybe the point was to avoid kids to buy items by themselves and empty Mom or Dad credit card as it's not the same account to recharge Crysta and to pay the sub ? I can't say, but it does work, I used it once in awhile.

Of course if you have the game on Steam it's no use, but a lot of people prefer having the base game and extensions out of Steam for many reasons including lower prices, etc.
Since you checked for your friend, know that Twitch offer works in pair with this, would you take the Twitch code (you can claim until tomorrow) you can create a new account and have the base game + HW + 30 days free.
(Without to say that Balmung is still opened to transfert which is amazing).

Twitch prime gave a non steam base key last month and I just added this code to my lil' sister account which I created with the Twitch prime code, so if you still have access to one of those code or can ask someone for it (I think there is a topic about that even here) you can have the base game + HW + 30 days free.
