It was completely for free at one point (on AlienwareArena I think).

Certainly a great game with a really cool base game campaign, but also very much worth keeping it up to date with the latest expansions. Each of the expansions I've played was great. I do find it difficult to come back to the game a year or two later after wrapping up whatever was the current content at the time, which I've done a couple times. Takes a minute to get back into the swing of things.
Another note: it's very playable solo. And even the co-op stuff can mostly be accomplished by simply showing up to the location and joining whatever randoms are there. A lot of that content is on a timer, and resets pretty frequently. Or at least, that's how it was every time I jumped back in.
The bad thing: no cross-platform accounts. Which is sucky if you're like me and have your best character trapped on PSN where you'll never play again, lol.

is it f2p after buy or i need to pay monthly like in wow?

There are no monthly fees unless you register for their monthly points thingy. Which is optional.

DLC is not the same as a subscription, and you aren't required to buy the DLC either. And actually, a person just getting started now would take quite a while to get through all the current content, at which point, it'll probably be a couple DLC in the future, and each new DLC backfills with all the older DLC, so it's a pretty efficient and user friendly system overall (especially if you leave and come back every couple years, which maximizes your purchase power with the DLC).

Hm... I have a base game and Tamriel Unlimited, which is not listed on the store and not mentioned in the description of the newest DLC (The Elder Scrolls Online Collection: Gold Road Includes The Elder Scrolls Online Standard Edition (base game), Gold Road and all previous Chapters - Necrom, High Isle, Blackwood, Greymoor, Elsweyr, Summerset, and Morrowind). So do I get something from that DLC or is it gone?

I don't know about your edition specifically, but whatever chapter you buy backfills all the previous chapters. The current one is Gold Road, so you'd get all the preceding chapters as well. If you manage to find an earlier chapter for sale, then you obviously wouldn't get anything that came afterwards.
It is probably worth noting that there is DLC separate from the chapters that can be bought via the points store, but each chapter does have a standalone story and opens up a huge new area of the game with tons of content that doesn't rely on points store purchases.
The last chapter I played through was Elsweyr, so I'm behind on any content that came out afterwards as far as being able to talk about quality and such.

Exactly. Plus, the base game has a ton of content on its own, so you'd definitely know if the DLC will be worth it to you by the time you've completed all that.

Sweet. I hope you enjoy it. It's been a couple years since I played, but I've got hundreds of hours invested in the game, personally.

but you can buy them with in-game gold from players

Seriously, this is an issue as a F2P player as armor/weapon crafting mats take up a lot of space.
However, I will mention that as someone who played the game for a bit, there are (or were) crafting guilds who basically just accepted money/mats for armor sets to help out people not buying into the monthly sub, and therefore not able to craft high level items.

I haven't played this in such a long time, but what you get in the base game is a LOT of content and for only $2 is really is a really good deal, as this is a quality MMORPG worth the money. The biggest issue is the amount of inventory and bank space as Berion and Zelrune mentioned above. I remember how quick you can run out of space so it can be a bit of a pain if you don't get the ESO+ sub.
For those wondering it's $15 a month if you go month by month, but there's other plans as well. Here's all the info below.

Base game comes with the Morrowind chapter/expansion and Imperial City DLCs by default nowadays. They have also given a lot of free DLCs over last year. It's a lot of content for that price. Just an FYI.

Less than $2 in most places for the base game - nice price to try it out. Excellent game and a lot of content straight out of the shelf.
Sadly though, if you want the whole game with all current DLCs (The Elder Scrolls Online Collection: Gold Road or The Elder Scrolls Online Deluxe Collection: Gold Road), the best (but region restricted) deal seems to be currently -74% at GreenManGaming at close to $20 (which is not HL, that was -78% at Humble Store a month ago).
Also, as mentioned by Berion83 and explained below by Zelrune and FateOfOne, there is an optional $12-15 ESO+ monthly subscription, which mainly expands storage, but amongst others also allows access to all but last of DLCs.
