First step, stop using your computer/laptop that it is dying on. You're only going to speed up the death, and if you want to save your data, that's the last thing you need. Do -not- run chkdsk or defragment, as those are also only going to kill the drive much faster. I mean, why would you chkdsk and cause more read/writes when you know the drive is already going? Second step, buy a USB <-> sata connector. Third step, buy a second HD. Insert HD into laptop/PC and set up accordingly. Fourth step, use USB <-> sata connector to look at the files. Fifth step, copy and paste over the files.
Costs?
USB <-> sata connector, with power supply, is maybe only 20$. That's all mine was, and it works for all hard drives.
HD depends on how much you're willing to spend and how much you've got to back up.
Loss of data? You can't put a price on your shit when you lose it.

I have 12TB and all are full...need a new one. If any of mine die I'll cry forever. And I'm too poor to 1:1 the drives =[
