So Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain has looked really good the past few times I've seen trailers for it. Problem for me is, I really hate jumping into a story WAY to late. It sounds like the series is known for a really good serious story (less than serious gameplay but story is what I want anyway). Now, from some reading I know that it is set somewhere in the middle of all the previous games, but again, I would really rather get caught up from the beginning before getting it.

I'm not particularly fond of watching playthroughs because there is a bit that makes games unique that you loose there, the interactivity and thus a level of immersion. That however is a different discussion, so I'll list it as an option.

Now I have a few different options here...

1: I see if anyone I know has a PS3 and MGS Legacy Collection (looks like it has everything except Metal Gear Rising Revengance and the newest MGS V Ground Zeroes)/Buy the LC myself while borrowing their PS3.
Cost= 0~$50 depending on if they have the LC or not.

2: I go out and buy a PS3 and the Legacy Collection. (Not really a preferred option because of the investment for one series. I did tell myself I wouldn't buy an Xbox One just for Halo/Fable... But there are plenty of games I missed out on being a PC/360 player)
Cost= ~$200-250 depending on where I buy new or used etc...

3: I look up a summary and just read up on the series.
Cost= Other than a little time and eye strain: Zero, zip, zilch, nada.

4: I look for a playthrough with no commentary that includes all of the game or at very least all of the story (not just cutscenes because theres plenty of stuff lost without context in some games)
Cost= Other than the time spent watching/listening to the video... Nothing. Though I have heard that some (if not all) of the games are extremely long, so that could be a larger commitment than I am currently thinking.

5: None of the above/Fill in the blank... I'm open for suggestions if anyone thinks there may be a better solution.
Cost= ???

So at this point I'm looking to see if anyone is able to tell me what might be the best way to proceed. Is this a series I can watch and still get invested in, or is it something I NEED to 'experience'? If I can watch it and anyone can direct me to a good recorded playthrough, that would be nice. Should I just read up because of the amount of time it would take to play/watch all eight games in the Legacy Collection? Do you have some other possibility I haven't listed? Any help would be appreciated.

Especially for MGS2, you kind of need to experience it for yourself, not through a Let's Play or a gameplay series. I'd say grab a PS3 & the Legacy Collection since there are plenty of great PS3 exclusives.

Well.. Metal Gear Solid is my favourite game series and MGS3 is probably my favourite game of all time.

Buy a PS3. The system has enough exclusives worth playing that it wouldn't be a waste of cash. Games like Demon's Souls, inFamous, the Ratchet & Clank series, Valkyria Chronicles, etc.

MSX ones as well, but most people ignore these anyway.

For any game or game series, or movie, or book, reading up on it should be the last option chosen, because it really does rob you of the experience. Not just for Metal Gear Solid, but ANYTHING. If you have to buy a PS3, don't feel bad about it because there are legitimately tons of great exclusives (or other games that aren't but may as well be) that have collections (or not) on the PS3. Resistance, Team Ico, Killzone, Ratchet & Clank, Sly Cooper, Jak & Daxter, Zone Of The Enders, God Of War...the list goes on and on for collections. I don't know if any of those appeal, but if they do, then buying it isn't necessarily the worst option.

Naturally if you can find someone with a PS3 that can also lend you the collection...I guess that would work, although I don't know if they'd be willing to lend you their entire console (and perhaps the collection, although not so serious a consideration) for a decent length of time it would take to finish all the games. In the long run it may be just more practical and more enjoyable (if more expensive) to buy the console and the games.

Because honestly, what would you do with the collection if you had to buy it while lending a PS3? I don't know what your monetary restraints are, but that's what I'd go with if I could. My last option would be to read a summary, and even then I only like to do that with things I've either already played, to brush up on it, or things I know I will never play (or games like TLOZ where you don't have an easy in-game story for it).

You can just watch the playthrough on Youtube, but of course the experience'll be slightly different since this is MGS we're talking about.
...buuut on the other hand, no moolah spent.

Wants vs. Needs really when it comes to this.

Everything from Legacy Collection, except MGS4, can be played on PC. MGS1 and 2 were released on PC and the rest can be emulated (which is fine as long as you own the original console and game, right? wink wink!).

I'm hoping we can get MGS4 ported. It worked on Ikaruga for me. :P

The story is only part serious. The bigger part is the bizarre mindscrews. I also haven't figured out exactly where V fits in the timeline (if it even fits). But my money's between 3 and 1, somewhere around/just after Peace Walker.

That'd mean that if you have an Xbox 360, you also have the option of picking up the HD collection - seen that go around for cheap. And it has 3 (Snake Eater) and Peace Walker to get you up to speed to where you need to be.
(HD collection also exists for the PS3, but if you need to get the console first, might as well go all the way with Legacy Collection)

What exactly would I be missing with the 360 version? I never bought it when I was mainly on that console because it seemed like I would miss the PS1 games. And that was the start of the series... Important stuff I assume.

you'll miss MSG1, which isn't part of the HD collection (they couldn't get the rights to the GameCube rerelease, and porting from the old PS1 code was too much effort at the time or something) but which time-wise comes after V (probably) anyway.
And you'll miss MSG 4, which was PS3 exclusive and which is chronologically the end of the series. Unless V decides to be a sequel to that, which will take liberal amounts of mindfuck to make that work. Knowing the series, it's a distinct possibility though.

Ok... This has only been up for about an hour, but I've got some stuff to do, so I'll check back soon. I'm leaning toward selling off a few of my old 360 games and saving up to buy a PS3 and the Legacy Collection. Will most likely need to wait a while before I can do that but from the few of you who have responded it sounds like it would be worth it. Does anyone know a more solid release date than the "sometime in 2015" I'm getting from a quick search? I was hoping to upgrade my PC before Witcher 3 comes out in February. So I may just hold off on Metal Gear for a while if it isn't gonna be out until late next year or even later. That wait would let the price drop on the console too.

Ground Zeros is coming out on PC December 18th this year, but still no date for Phantom Pain.

Weren't there a lot of complaints about Ground Zeroes being really short when it came out for consoles a while back? I would rather wait until Phantom Pain is released/near release if that's the case. Being able to play straight through to the game that I started the series for without a big break would be nice. Same way I've started to go with Hitman since the Square Enix bundle had all of them.
