Vikings vs Samurais
Of course i'm going to vote "vikings"...And here is my attempt at making reason for it, as being Scandinavian: They were not the kind of cruel, blood-lusting, violent savage killing-machines History Channel will have people believe.
When they raided, they did so out of hunger and desperation. They might sail to a place wanting to trade, only to be chased away while they had their family and village at home risking starvation for the winter. What would others do in such a situation?
And the tale about the guy (Tormod Kolbrunarskald) who pulled an arrow out of his heart and looked down on it noticing the fat sticking to the arrowhead, and then hailing the king for having fed him so well...It's just that; Bard's tales; Along with the cleaving men in twain from shoulder to groin with a single blow.
They did not love fighting and bloodshed no more than other people; In fact, a duel (called Holmgang) had not spectators. It was the duelers, left alone on an island, and only the survivor were going to be picked up when the duel was over.
But only the combination of a belief in a better life in Valhalla after death, honor code and morale, desperation, poverty and hunger; Made them formidable fighters. That; and guerrilla-tactics rather than modern-tactics ...There is nothing more draining and deadly to either of the warring parties than prolonged trench-wars, and modern warfare..
It's really a silly question you pose since Samurais have never presented an army of themselves. Samurais are more like battalion/troupe leaders or barons or chieftains i would say. I doubt there was ever 1000 samurais gathered together alone in any Japanese battle. It would be more comparable to ask Knights VS Vikings.
And why would Samurais fight Vikings anyway, even today Japan is basically the perfect trade-partner and good tourists :)

i know you are kind a turned down by manga and japanese stuff in general but believe me, this 2 mangas that i am trying to get are really serious, and bloody and great, read a couple of chapters of each online, you wont regret it. i also intend on buying the one you talk about some time in the future too

Ugh, no, especially that last image with the second-to-last panel with the pig-faced warrior and then the over-dramatic speech text bubble. It just does not strike me as the least bit serious, it looks like really bad satire and terrible artwork.

yeah vinland saga inst as serious as vagabond and the drawing isnt as good, but terrible artwork? heck no, the art is one of the best out there

and terrible artwork
Are you serious? I mean, I can understand how you may not like the speech and style of the novel, but going as far a calling the artwork "terrible" sounds like mindless hating. :P

You're welcome to have your opinion, just as I have mine.
Fair point. I'd love to see you do half as good as that though.
>:D

I've never understood this reaction, the idea that unless you can do something as well as/better than someone else, you're not allowed to criticize them. You probably don't like justin bebier, but I don't expect you to go sell millions of pop music albums:P

Well, it mostly because you said that it's "terrible artwork" and "untalented". A better choice of words would have been that you just didn't like the artwork. Criticizing something because you don't like it doesn't make much sense; sure, it doesn't look good to you, but that doesn't change the fact that the artist has enough talent to draw an entire novel - with a simple glimpse you can tell that it took a long time and lots of efforts to produce it.
Then again, that may just be because I was raised in a rather artistic family and learned that "all art is good art", and that personal opinions rarely reflect the actual value of an artwork if a person happens to dislike it. :P
But you did say that it was your opinion, so nothing wrong with that. I'm just salty because I don't like seeing any kind of decent art being called "untalented" or "terrible".

I find the overly-simplistic black-and-white panels and the overly-exaggerated style of that particular artist terrible. I never said all manga/anime artists are terrible.
I'll say that I spent most my high school to post-college years amongst artists of various stripes, helped run a neighborhood gallery, and at one time seriously considered switching my major to photography and have had my work featured in amatuer zines and art shows as well. I don't really do it anymore because, to be honest, I'm lazy.
IMHO there is objectively good and bad art ,although that is entirely subject to a myriad of values, some of which are aesthetic and some of which are not.

Samurai wins over Viking, science has spoken.
Of course, that "science" is to be taken with a bucket of salt.

I might be biased a little bit, but i think Samurai's would win. Vikings are basicly raiders specializing in quick suprise attacks, they didn't use any advanced tactics, even though some of their practices are legendary, they didn't had nothing beyond that. War is also fought by provision and support and Vikings were heavily lacking in that, even if they might won some battles, they would eventually loose because lack of tactis and long term kept bases. Important thing is also where the war would take place, if it was around japan vikings would have one advantage and one huge disadvantage - having acces to anywhere from sea and thus having absolutly free range in quick suprise attacks, but they could never keep a piece of land for any period of time because they woudn't have enough of man power or supplies to wistand a siege or anything, being so far from home means no new men, no weapons, no food, no nothing. Also the equipment, both viking warriors and samurais were higher class citizens who could afford better armor, only advantage i see is in quality of weapons - axe's are simply weaker then samurai swords in production quality and in vertisality, also samurais used cavalry, considering all this i don't think vikings would actually stand a chance.

Vinland Saga is really damn good. I've read it till volume 5.
I'll try to get Vagabond later. And I'm interested with Berserk, Claymore, and Kingdom

To me Vikings were nothing but bloodthirsty murderers. Still, that's enough motivation to win the Samurais in a fight.
