I am deciding weather of not to get my 14 year old son the latest Hitman, and according to all classification agencies it is +18. However, I have seen game play of it I really think it should be +15. What would you guys think it deserves?

Yea, well I don't particularly want my child growing up being retarded.

Why would he become retarded by playing a game with high age restrictions, if you do some research to what he will see in-game you can decide if you feel like it is too much for him.

Please refrain from using the term "retarded" derogatorily. If not for you, then for your kid's sake. There are many other words you can use that do not insult or trivialize mental illness.

Surprises me that people would be in any way offended by the word. Here in Australia it is just part of our culture.

People are offended by everything.

In answer to your question, if the game, any AAA or otherwise mainstream game, has a bad effect on a child, it's not the games fault, clearly there were other conditions in play (either honest to god psychological ones, or environment). It's just like using band langauge, listening to (crappy) music, or violent movies. You don't just see it and decide to go shoot up a school or something, there's gotta be something else going on.

If u can even get retarded, why introduce ur kids to game? Its the worst influence. Go ask them to study :)

Our family never uses profanity, words like 'bloody' aren't even considered remotely wrong.

I was playing games that were above my age restriction probably since I was like 13 years old ;) I don't consider myself "retarded" because of that. Everyone is different really. My brother is 15 now and he also plays some titles that in terms of classification are above his age. But hey, you are his parent so it's your decision in the end.

The classification doesn't matter, not really. Every kid is different and it really depends on what you think your kid can handle. I mean this is about being a contract killer more or less. Does your kid understand fantasy from reality and has the emotional maturity to not act it out? If so then he can play the game.

They are pretty mature, and tend to be grounded in the real-world. I may wait another one or two years I reckon.

Well one, you may want to wait till the full game is released anyway. Two, if that's the case and you trust in your parenting, then I say go for it.

Well I don't have it yet but let's me honest it's hitman. And if you think about the previous HITMAN games...
Isn't the fact that you play as HITMAN who's job after all is to KILL, MURDER and so on people is enought to rate it 18+ ? :)
In my book, those games are not for kids.

Comparing what I have seen of Absolution to this, it is not half as bad. Will wait for more gameplay videos to come out tomorrow, first chapter is being released.

Well, I'm not a father - as you have already figured out - but maybe you could play that game for yourself, too, so you show that you understand what's going on and jeah could be an example, that playing a game about commiting the perfect murder, doesn't make you a murderer or a bloodseeking lunatic in real life.

Your kid gonna face the content included in these kinds of games sooner or later, so why not getting him what he wants instead of him somehow getting his hands on them without you knowing? This at least you know what he's doing and playing.

I would rather him start later. You wouldn't want your 5 year old playing Outlast, or something similar.

Well honestly I think a 14 year old is old enough to at least choose his own video games. I'm sure as a parent you've seen many teenagers getting into drugs because their parents were trying hard to prevent them from going anywhere near drugs, it's kinda the same thing for video games.
And another thing, I think games like outlast are different, even there are many adults out there who get traumatized by playing it and if a 5 year old see a few seconds of it, I'm pretty sure he wouldn't dare to play it at all.

First off, props to you for being a responsible parent, especially in this day and age.

How important is it that he play this game? There is an abundance of other games out there for him to play. There will be 100's more games like Hitman for him to play when you believe he's old enough, so don't worry about him missing this one. It's a game about murdering people in cold blood; definitely not intended for younger children. ;)

He has never played a stealth game in his life, since they all seem to be quite violent, which isn't surprising.

Well, the bottom line I guess is that those age classifications were put there for a reason. shrug
Whether or not you heed them is entirely up to you.

Also, I'm not entirely sure what sort of "objective" opinions you'd get on this subject on a forum centered primarily around video games. ;)

It's a game about killing people. Whether you think that's appropriate for your child is up to you
I don't think there's that much blood and gore, so it's not visually/viscerally horrendous, but I don't know for sure - wait for it to come out and watch some gameplay videos.

Whether an age rating is applicable for a particular child depends on the child. Some kids handle things better than other kids

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I think the kids parents are the only one that is able to know if the kid can handle the game content.
actually, today, we have adults that I would not recommend a +18 game.
not everyone is the same, not everyone face things equaly... some are mature, some don't. the age doesn't add much.

get him a different game , maybe a strategy one. The 18+ rating is right.

If you're confident your kid can distinguish fantasy and reality then I very much doubt there's anything in that game that could be harmful to him.

This, I played all the Hitman games when I was younger and I never became a contract killer.

Also I doubt Square Enix is going to put anything THAT shocking in there if you look at their track record.

With all due respect, chances are your kid has played worse already( Any of the GTAs with their crazy mods for example). So if he is fine now and knows the difference between real life and games and has been mature about it, then there's no reason why he can't play the latest hitman.
That's my opinion.

hitman games have been about choosing your route, you CAN sneak through without killing anyone (unless its a mission where you kill someone obviously but thats usually a cut scene) but you can also "make a mess" but the game hasn't rewarded that at all, in fact it makes it MUCH harder and gives you less of a score in the long run. you are supposed to NOT be seen, no one should notice you. of course there are bits that are going to be mature, drugs, whores, killing, its hitman, but its not a blatant kill everyone game.

Buy him assassin's Creed if he wants to try a stealth game, it's less violent

If they say it's 18+, then it's 18+. If your son grew up with principles and he's not oversensitive, then don't worry, just buy him the game anyway - it won't affect him and he'll enjoy it.

I wanted to say I give you credit for being responsible parent and taking this seriously. Yes, this a a game and after your kid plays this he doesn't go outside and murder someone but it will definitely shape his ideas and future among with other things. It will be influence on him. So, pros to you.

For the game, I recommend you to wait for another few years too before playing this game. But it will be your decision after all since you know your son better than any of us.

It's up to you. If you want my opinion, then 15 is old enough to play murder games. I guess the game publishers just want to play it safe against all the people who may want to sue them because "the game made my kid violent" while their own neurotic behavior made their kid violent, and the game was his only coping mechanism.

Whether people care about it or not, it has to be there for legal reasons. I'm sure the majority of parents wouldn't have a problem letting their 15 year old play an 18 rated game.

Well, I played Hitman: Blood Money when I was12, and I haven't assassinated anyone yet, so I'd say its pretty safe.

At 14 i wouldn't be worried about anything he is going to see in a video game it will be nothing compared to what he has seen on tv or the internet daily unless he has lived a very sheltered life, only reason Hitman would get a 18+ rating would be the fact that your an assassin killing people, as long as you know he is mature enough to know the difference between real life and a video game you should be all set to get this for him.
