You don't use email to log in to Steam, though, you use your Steam username. And I think the same goes for support, so I'm confused.

When launching the normal steam software on my computer, my username is auto filled in, and yet all my password attempts are not working.
I'll try to login to the steam website, where it askes either to use account email, username, and password to log in.
None are working.
Now i can't even login to my accounts cox email as its magically not remembering its password, secret question info etc

Here you should select and write a ticket, sorry that I can't provide more help, not familiar with this :(
I hope the account get recovered. Not sure if this is only steam or your email, as well.
PS: This might maybe help https://www.steamgifts.com/discussion/ywKiZ/how-to-lock-your-steam-account-from-hackers

well whatever has happened, i literally cannot login to any of my emails, steam associated or not.
cannot login to steam
can't make a steam support ticket as all the emails ive tried using i can't log in, so i can't receive a help code from them to confirm that my ticket is working etc.
A very rarely used email I have worked. I've submitted a steam help ticket. Now I need to figure out how to access my emails whose passwords magically no longer work

Valve support usually give "priority" to the "owner" of the account email which was used to create the steam account originally.
Im not 100% sure but the only way to support will removed the authenticator (phone number) is if someone else ask for it and give them prof that he/she is the original owner of the account by demostrating access to the email account originally use to create the steam account.
If you dont have access to that email account, my suggestion is try whatever you can to regain it, otherwise steam will consider you're not the "real" owner of the account.
Btw, never change your email account unless it will be a "matter of life or death", also never use an email account that is not sure (like an account from your work, or educational, or any account you may loose access with the time).

which is just as weird, i'm having to submit help tickets to try to reaccess an email not related to steam (yahoo), and still having trouble trying to gain access to my steam related cox email. as their passwords magically arent working right now either...

If you have access to the account you use to create the steam account submit a ticket demanding you're the right onwer (if someone hacked you and change the email account from your steam account, support have the info of the original email, and if there was any change on it. Not matter the phone numer the email account have most "weight" for support to determine an ownership, they sent intrucctions to recover the steam account to the 1st email account linked to steam.

Seems like you wanted a "free game" from some website.

It sounds like the source of your problem is a hacked email. I suggest you contact your (main) email provider to get your account back. Once you have it back, you can see about cleaning all of the other accounts connected to it. (I hope you don't have your back account connected to your email.)
In the future, I suggest you protect yourself by "compartmentalizing" your personal information. Set things up so that if one of your accounts gets hacked, the rest are still secure because they are not directly connected to the hacked account.

It looks like you got your account back. Now you will be much more accurate =)

Have you locked your Steam account already? You should be able to do this before they recover it for you -->> https://www.steamgifts.com/discussion/ywKiZ/how-to-lock-your-steam-account-from-hackers

Report to Steam support.
https://help.steampowered.com/wizard/HelpWithAccountStolen
Your computer and email account are likely to be contaminated.
Report new contacts to Steam support from another computer.
At that time, information on credit cards and product keys used in the past may be necessary.
Do not reuse email addresses that appear to be tainted even if you make a mistake.
While waiting for a reply from Steam, you should check your computer as it may be contaminated with viruses and malware.
If possible, delete everything and reinstall.

My advice is to right now create a brand new Gmail account and when you get your account back, set it up as your Steam email. They don't get hacked or at least not as often as yahoo, cox, and other emails that are constantly having this problem. I see there's a sorta pandemic with hacked cox emails right now, via Google search. I believe gmail has better security. My yahoo emails got hacked/hijacked more than once, but I never had anything important on those. I set obscure passwords for them and change them periodically and it stopped happening.
Set a really obscure password to your new email address. Something that looks like this: 4(L;kH7mg!G%3S9mD*9 If you use a series of random symbols, letter and numbers, it is much harder for hackers to get in. Often times, when your email is hacked it's because you've used a generic password of dictionary words and a couple of numbers, or used the same password in several places, one of which was compromised. Don't do that.
Set your phone as the recovery for the email address, and if you must, you could set up one recovery email with its own unique password. (Never use the same password twice). Never ever use that recovery email to sign up to something on the internet. Keep it safe and private, and change it's obscure password every 6 months at the very least. This way, that account stays safe and should serve as a means to quickly recover any of your other accounts that get hacked or hijacked.
Before you do any of the above, make sure that your computer is free of viruses, malware or keyloggers by running a scan on your machine.
So long as you've locked your Steam account as others have suggested above, they won't be able to cause much damage. You'll probably get it back within a couple of days.

about point 2.. this is so wrong way to go about passwords...
Just use few random words with special chars in between. Easier to remember for human, and length is what matters

Yeah, my yahoo email still got hacked when I did that, which is why I don't do it now. I make something obscure that means nothing to me and write it down in a little notebook. Sure... that's not safe either if someone stole it, but I don't write what they are for, just a little hint so I know what it's for. You can also just use a password manager though. Yahoo was notorious for getting hacked. Not sure what it's like now, but I still do it the way I mentioned and haven't had an issue with a compromised email account since. (But perhaps if you put 4 words together like that, maybe. Problem is, we pick things that mean something and reuse 'em like an algo) Could jinx the not getting hacked now though. XD. People tend to replace O with 0, A with 4, S with 5 and so on. A script can determine those.

I'm so lazy that I just use Lastpass. (lastpass.com) They have autofill option so that when it is a wrong site it won't fill, and you won't lose your account. They say on their site like it is all encrypted and without your master password no one including NSA can get to it, but I'm not so sure about it. Although you can see if someone logged into your facebook or smth, so I use it. There are other password managers like Dashlane, 1Password as well.

The problem is to remember different passwords for hundreds of sites. The easy solution is a password manager and a strong (in length) master password. And of course, use long randomly generated passwords from the manager. The downside of it if that your password manager/service is hacked, you're done.
On the other side every time I see that xkcd strip I tend to agree with it, but it also makes me think that such a solution makes cracking a stolen hash easier. Instead of having to go through n characters, you would only have to try combinations of 3-4 common words. English has around 170,000 words. But when I do the math (170,000 words)^4/1000 guesses/s it still gives a lot of years.
Comment has been collapsed.
Yeah, that's the thing. In theory, I absolutely agree with it. But...people who use random words tend to start using a system of them. Maybe their pets name, their child's name and a nickname or something. So "BartleyKatieBooBoo123" or something like that. Then they switch them around a little for each site. XD. Some guy figures out one of those passwords, he's probably going to guess the rest. Oops. Now, for sites that I don't give a toss about, I use something a little easier to remember, but still look something like the xkcd strip with numbers replacing letters, or something. If they get hacked, it's not a big deal. But, your emails or financial stuff are the most important because they are the key to everything. Hehe!
They say with password managers, you should definitely write down your master password and keep it in a safe. Just in case you forget what it is. Losing/forgetting the damn master password, now that would be a feckin bummer. LOL!
Comment has been collapsed.
Yeah, specially when you have a lot of accounts... I think everyone should be using a password manager, you only need to create / remember one strong password, and the rest the manager handles. You have strong, unique passwords for each of your accounts and you don't have to remember a single one of them because the manager just fills them in for you. Bitwarden for the win!

You might be able to use your purchase history to convince valve the account is yours, e.g. if you used your credit cards to buy stuff on steam in the past you can prove your cards are yours and use that to your advantage.
Also once you get your account back, set up two factor authentication right away.
Comment has been collapsed.
Seconded.
Use purchase history to verify your claim. Did that with Rock* Social Club to get access to GTA V (forgot password)
Comment has been collapsed.
thats what the son of a bitch did too. in their 'help ticket' they copy n pasted a purchase history from the account (through my email they hacked?)
either way steam gave me back control, as I had 2 help tickets submitted. One from me, and one from the damn algerian

yes, BUT he can't get statements from your credit card company, get that info from your bank/creditcard provider etc. and challenge that *****'s claims
Also glad you got your stuff back

I hope that you are not using this mail address for something other than gaming, since the attacker can reset your other accounts with it. They might also impersonate you and attack some of your contacts.

good thing i got no contacts! :D
... although when i regained control, i could see a few emails that were in 'draft mode' that i wrote years+ ago that were brought up again yesterday.

Possible keylogger? How did he get into so many accounts? Used the same passwords? No authentication?

**Final update. ... Damn steam gave me back control. I've since reset and changed all info.
**3rd update.
So, apparently my cox email received email notices that my yahoo email was having login attempts.
This sign in was on:
Device chrome, windows nt
When September 28, 2019 2:09:54 AM PDT <- 4am my time
Where* Algeria
41.103.213.130
dumbass yahoo decided to allow account information changes, despite being from another continent.
Then the wretched piece of shit somehow gained access to my cox email account and changed its information as well.
Then changed all my steam information to their Algerian nonsense.
As of this moment, i've regained control of my emails. But no longer have access to steam damn them.
**** 2nd update
Holy fuck, Damn Algerian ip address took over my cox and yahoo email and stole steam etc. Algeria
41.103.213.130 16DZPROD@gmail.com took over my fucking yahoo and cox email. ive since restored them though
** 1st update
Earlier I got a text on my phone from a 732-873 detailing that steam support has removed my phone number.
But i never did such a thing.
Now i can't even log into my steam account, as my email is no longer available \ associated with any current steam account.
WTF do i do!?!
I can't even figure out how to submit a damn steam support help ticket. it keeps looping me around so many damn choices, and it'll usually loop back to 'ok now use your accounts associated email to log in...' WHICH IS NO LONGER WORKING ATM FOR ME?!!
If whatever possibly changed my email, my accounts email should've been notified of any changes... but i haven't gotten any such emails!
If those notifiers would work, I can no longer access my steam associated email as well now! Password magically dosent work anymore!
