Can I play HL2 mods, to get those cards? And can I play episodes?

No idea, I just started the game and alt-tabbed back to something else. Cards appeared.

If you want to idle, better start the game in textmode (you can run multiple games in textmode!)

You need to either join the Trading Card group and get on the waiting list, or you need to get a spare invite from someone else who already got one this way.

You can purchase the beta from the community market for pretty cheap now or wait to be added, just join the community steam set up.
