Hello guys,

I need your help regarding upgrading my computer. About couple of months ago my AMD 4850 graphic card got busted. I am running my computer from a borrowed graphic card which also happens to be a 4850. I want to upgrade my computer so that I can play the latest games like Witcher 3, Mad Max, Alien Isolation etc.

My CPU and RAM specs are as below:
CPU: Intel i5-2500 @ 3.30 GHz
RAM: 4 GB DDR3

My budget is about $250. I am going to either buy a R290 which is the most bang for buck available at the local market for approximately $150. Otherwise I am going to ask someone from the US to get a RX 480 which is priced at $240. To be very honest about shopping for graphic cards and I am choosing to buy the RX 480 only because it is the latest thing in the market and quite cheap (don't know about how better it is compared to R290).

I will also upgrade my RAM to either 8GB or 16GB depending on what I am left with after the purchase of the graphic card.

What I wish to know from you guys is that if my CPU is okay enough to handle the games I mention? Or is there a better solution that you can propose given my budget (or maybe as close to as possible). Please help me out with this. Also suggest an economical monitor that supports HDMI display (economical = with $150).

Thank you

I would not advise an x90, the x80 and x80X cards have a somewhat better price/performance ratio, plus they can comfortably run anything today (and they are rather Vulcan-friendly and DX12-friendly). The 480 would be the best idea, but in Europe for that budget I'd say try to get a 380X or 380. (And forget NVidia. What they have in that price range is beaten by AMD, NVidia is good over 500 USD only.)

R9 380 is approximately $255. more expensive than the RX 480 if bought from the US. Which one would you choose?

The 480. It is a lot faster for that money, but you run the risk of not having a warranty. Still, on that price range, it is the best choice for performance and being future-proof.

Rule number 1 in hardware: there is no such thing as future proof.

In gaming… there seems to be. If the 8th console generation will hold back PC games as well for another 5-7 years, then current cards could hold out until 2022. If a 2012 card, the HD 7850/70 can still run any game released today without even getting close to 720p minimum settings, meaning it still has years of its life cycle, how long will the almost twice as fast RX 480 last or the even more powerful cards?

The 290 is quite power hungry, be sure your psu can support that (In case you get it).

RX480 for your budget, and overall a decent card for its price value (and as stated higher its more future prof for directX12 and other new APIs)
If you want something more powerful and can spare some more, than go to 1070. I dont think there are other worth cards for the price out there...(cause I dont think about buying used cards, there was always a mining factor for them, and overall a new thing is a new thing)

1070 is WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYY out of my price range. It's $600.

Well its similar price here, tho it wont be long when it will start dropping closer to 400$, and theres always international delivery.. =)
The rx480 is about 330$ here btw, still better than 970 for exact same price...

I read some other replies and couple of days ago check online, RX 480 is out of stock every where. I can wait though...

You don't live in the US judging by the price of the 480?

I would if i were you, and specifically for saphire nitro edition of rx480 it will be a beast of a card =) ( i have saphire 380, a pretty solid card, witcher3 on high+ )

Nah, i'm from Ukraine =)

Your CPU seems absolutely fine. I played Mad Max with maxed out graphics on a Intel quad core i5 2.67GHz (8GB RAM and Radeon R9 380x). Also, you'll want to watch your PSU and make sure you'll have enough power for your new GPU.

Okay that is good to the know. I bought it about 4 or 5 years ago.

I'd say just get an RX 480, and just like what the others have already said your CPU is just fine.

Yeah, I was worried a lot about the CPU because there have recently been a real price increase in the computer hardware in my country thanks to taxes and prices have almost increased to 1.5x or 2x of actual price.

I really don't know if this is the right thread for me (buying new PC parts, right?) but would you consider checking on eBay and the like? Not sure what customs charges would be, but I picked up some HD 7870 series card for $75 shipped. I don't really have an eye for quality images and fps and all, but just curious if this might be an option for you.

I could buy one off ebay and get it delivered... I will check with my customs office for the charges. Another option is that I can get it delivered to any of my friends and ask my brother who works in an airline to get it delivered through the crew :3

I cannot speak for the 480.

All I can say is that I have a 380 MSI GAMING 4GB, but my I3450 3.2 doesnt match its power. (Noticed it when trying to pull more from witcher 3)
A friend of mine has the same gpu has mine, but a better cpu, and performs better. The 380 4gb is pretty decent and less power hungry than 290.

Next step for me is to upgrade the cpu.

BUT, i can play MAD MAX at MAXimum, GTA V with High/little ultra, same for Witcher 3

Alien Isolation and Mad Max are very well optimized, so you will play just fine with whatever you choose.

8GB to 16GB is something that I don't fell like necessary right now.
But maybe your cpu needs a upgrade.

Monitor, maybe something from BenQ?

Do you mean you can 100% the CPU in a game with the GPU under full load? Even an i3 should not really do that, even if that is the worst gaming-grade CPU of Intel.

What I notice is that for some graphic option on witcher 3, the cpu would make a difference.
Im saying this because a friend of mine has a pc basically equal to mine. But his cpu is a 8 core 4,2 from amd I think. And he can play with better framerate when some of those option are on.

If your CPU is not at 100%, then the difference between your frame rates is not because of having different CPUs (and by the description, not even from the same manufacturer; as Intel has only server-grade CPUs with 8 cores and over 3.5 GHz, so it sounds more like an AMD FX-8350). I'd start looking at drivers, HDD, RAM, or junk running on the OS in general.
CPU can make a difference, yes, but usually not that large.

I think it is that AMD FX 8350.

You are probably right. I need to do a clean install. 3 years without formatting my pc.

Thanks for the advice! ;)

I am not that much into numbers or getting the ultra high super duper quality video. I just want the game to work on medium or preferably on high settings.

If what you say is true then I think I won't be needing a CPU upgrade.

It's true. I cannot prove that now, but with a I3450 3,2, 8GB 1600 and MSI 7850 1GB, I could play Alien and Mad Max without any problem.

With any of those you mention you are okay then. But the more recent and power efficient the better. Remember to check the psu too.

Get an RX 480, with it you'll be able to play the latest game for at least 3-4 years, if not longer.

I live in the us and its nearly impossible to obtain a RX480. I feel like a GTX 960 would be sufficient for most games on medium, for much cheaper.

Never researched about the GTX 960 or any other Nvidia card just because of the price tag :s

The 960 is old, so prices have gone down significantly. You can get them for around $100-150 and they should be able to run newer games.

I checked one of the local websites, the 960 is unavailable but the 950 costs $210 :( Thieves.

Anything made at 16nm, everything else is wasting your money.
And 8GB of RAM would be advised.

For your budget, AMD RX480 or Nvidia 1060.

What he said. I'd go with 1060 since you're likely to have a tired power source which may not have been that great to begin with and 480 is really power hungry.

The RX 470 / 460 NDA expires in a few hours (10 or so), and they should also start selling immediately. It's speculated that the 470 will cost $150 for the 4GB version and $180 for the 8GB version, and be quite good (close enough to the 480). So wait a few hours patiently and see how it turns out. I'd normally recommend going a little higher, but given your budget and the other things you want to buy, a $150 card with good enough performance may be the way to go. At most you'd play with graphics set to a lower level. Should still be miles better than the 4850.

As for your Core i5-2500, it shouldn't be a problem in most games. Example.

Edit: The Radeon R9 290 is good value at $150. It's generally a little slower than the RX 480 (see this review), but the RX 470 will likely be at the same ballpark, perhaps even losing to it in a few games. Just a guess, we'll know better in a few hours. Still, the R9 290 is a lot more power hungry than the 4850 you had, and since I don't know what power supply you have, that could be an issue.

Used 8GB R9 390s are going within your rate here in the states. That's the route I would go personally.
