I was a bit disappointed that I wasn't able to play as many games form my list as I had planned last month. The month flied by way too fast! I'll try it again this time... tried to make the list not too long this time, but that is hard for me, so many amazing unplayed games :P

Am curious, did you like Planet Alpha? :) It was definitely better than the "mixed reviews" led me to believe, loved the atmosphere! But could see how it wouldn't be for everyone.
Comment has been collapsed.
That's a good question. The atmosphere and graphics were really amazing that's for sure. I had some difficulty at first to get into the game but it got better with the time. Overall it's a solid game especially if you like platformers but it doesn't reach masterpieces like LIMBO.
Comment has been collapsed.
I completely agree! Glad you ended up enjoying it still. I need to play LIMBO myself, but INSIDE was absolutely incredible. If it's remotely as good as the latter I'm sure I'll love it. :)

Was SEUM: Speedrunners from Hell an actual SG win? Because I can't find it on the list of your wins.

Dohhhh right, I remember indeed. For some reason I was thinking that was for a game in April not May, sorry my bad!

It has difficulty settings, and apparently on easy you can't die, so at that point a 4 year old could just button mash their way through.

Seems I have a lot of nice space games to play - SpaceChem, Last Horizon, Rebel Galaxy, Infinifactory, Neon Space and they're all fairly to very long. Afraid I might fall down a rabbit hole and not be seen again. Also considering Dead Rising (4 in the series) another long one. For now I'll just start with Maize and think about this some more.
Edit: Wish I had read Adam1224's comments on Soma before I started it. Much time wasted avoiding unscary monsters, (or just trying to get them to stop blocking doorways) and getting turned around in very dark areas because I couldn't use the headlamp (monsters again). Other than that, an excellent game - story and concepts were very good. Apparently no mod is needed to render the monsters harmless - there is now a "safe" mode selection built into the gameplay options.

And Soma it is. It's sci-fi has a 4 and is much more manageable. After I finish that, I am going to try to embark on one of the 70+ hour games, because, if not now, then when? I'll let this thread be my inspiration. (Probably won't be able to finish it before June, though. I'm very pokey with some games and often take longer than HLTB.)

Added another game, sadly I am not enjoying J.U.L.I.A. at all ... I'll try to sit it through, but we'll see if I will actually end up finishing it this month.
Also, some achievements are locked behind a DLC, if I were to finish all besides those, does it count as completed or beaten?
As for Fake Colours, I had it on for the cards when I won it, so I'll count the time spent on it from now on.

yeah that would be the best idea. new game+ doesn't do anything but provide you with 1 extra sword so you can actually mess it up if you don't collect everything needed before finishing the game. apart from that 1 extra sword I didn't find it did anything else

Aahhh it's frankly a miracle that I managed to beat Late Shift, I relaunched the game easily 50+ times and spent several hours trying every hotfix to stop the black screen of death...but it'd appear randomly, never at the same part, often 5-10 mins into a chapter and there's no way to save in between chapters or fast forward. So I had to replay Chapter 2 alone at least 30 times. Good grief. :( Looks like a lot of people are also having problems. The story was fine, but nowhere near memorable enough to put up with that trouble. ;_; Am grateful I managed to brute force it tho, was very close to giving up before I got a lucky 15 min bug-free reprieve!
Anyways, yay successful month! Played more than in April combined. :)

Hi Mouse, Unfortunately I will not finish Darkest Hunter. I now have about half and the game is only grinding. You have to play a level several times to get all the stars and unlock the next level. Over time, it just gets too much and unfortunately it's not fun to do the same again and again.
Therefore, I have decided to continue with Goetia and I hope that this will be more varied and I hope I can finish it. :)
Update 26.05.2019: Goetia completed
Comment has been collapsed.
I just finished 12 Labours of Hercules IV (4)! :)
When I started the challenge, I had 4 hours already played and was halfway through completing. I finished the last level at 16.5 hours. (All levels completed with Gold level achievement!)
Here are my Achievements (look for "Gold Chain" unlocked May 13)
I'm just completing the monthly challenge vs. competing with other people, and I'm unsure what the Leaderboard is for -- would you like me to post a chart anyway?
Comment has been collapsed.
The leaderboard is just to show how much everyone has completed. Adding a chart makes my life a tiny bit easier but I can figure out all the data I need anyways without it so no need to worry about it. I am hoping to finally have the leaderboard up by the end of today.

Reply to this comments with your ideas for July's theme.
EDIT: Because I premade the thread for next month 3 days in advance and therefore I can not edit the poll I am not taking any more suggestions for this month, but please feel free to suggest them next month instead . Thank you for your understanding :)
Comment has been collapsed.
Here goes my expected suggestion! :D
Inspiration was a Zodiac sign Lion in which my parents celebrates their birthdays! ;)
"Lion's heart"
Edit: as Moony suggested there is new DLC for Heart part, completely free of charge! :D
Comment has been collapsed.
So this was the secret idea :D Nice one! ^^ Do people with animal names get a free pass to play anything? :P
Comment has been collapsed.
well damn its not like I had any of those anyway. Do i even own an animal game either i think the closest i got to animals are girl versions. There's mickey mouse I guess even though I planned that for next month... damn i need more wins. I'm running low on different varieties
Comment has been collapsed.
Oh well thanks for looking to see if you could find something. I still think your idea is great and I most likely will vote for it at this current moment even before you added the extra options. However now you added the extra stuff for the heart bit I should have something to play and who know's I might just come across an animal on the way

Well if they want to send a picture of their ID to me ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Since July was named after Julius Caesar, here's an obvious idea:
"Veni, vidi, vici ludum" (I came, I saw, I have beaten the game)

And here is my suggestion ;)
As July is in the middle of the summer season...
"Summer In The City"

Africa or Australia
A bit ironic considering it is winter there (or for some parts of it at least) right now :P
Thanks for the suggestion! ^^

you can take part even without achievements it will still count as long as it fits the theme or you do 2 non-theme games instead
Achievements just make it easier to see you played it but instead others tend to post screenshots of the credits and stuff to prove it's finished
Comment has been collapsed.
Ohhhh I knew my list of applicable games was missing something! Games with 4 in the game! I will add that in as a last minute addition :)
And what Cece said, you can just post a screenshot and that works fine if it doesn't have achievements ^^ Where she is wrong tho is that this month there is no 2 non theme games option.
Comment has been collapsed.
Yep because I think pretty much anyone should be able to find something that fits the theme. The only other difference there is from last month is that I did specify that you can post BLAEO lists together with the list of most recently played games (so I can do the math on the playtime in May ez pz)
Comment has been collapsed.
Pick whatever you think you will enjoy the most playing :) Looking forward to see what it will end up being :)

Since I just put it in the reply above this, how come you don't ask me to post a screenshot mouse? Like I've seen everyone else post it of course to prove they finished the game yet I don't plainly for the fact I hate having pointless screenshots but I see your reply about doing the screenshots if it hasn't got achievements. Wondering it for a little while but my mind refused to let me ask this simple question so just never did until now, even now though I've reread my message 3 times and still refusing to press submit

:/ Silence in Space - Season One seems bugged... Inventory is empty when I reload the game... I'll try to play in one session, but I think I must find another game for the month theme. Maybe Starship Traveller ? https://www.steamgifts.com/giveaway/TpHyf/starship-traveller

Sorry did not see the message before since you replied to yourself and I didn't get a notification for it. Starship Traveller works 100% fine with the theme :)

What about D4: Dark Dreams Don't Die? Does that qualify for May's game?
(If not, I'll find something, I'm sure.)

Yep, I added an option of "games with 4 in the name" which someone else reminded me of so if it doesn't fit under anything else, it fits under that :)

Damn, that is indeed absolutely perfect :D Have fun! :)

Ok, I finally cleared all the notification and things I had to do soooo I would like your option/thoughts/advice/help/ideas on something:
I am using this post to think through things a little bit so it will probably end up in a wall of text and a bunch of spaghetti with no clear beginning or end, sorry.
As some people might have seen already April's end month check/calculation/link sending took way too long (a whole afternoon and evening with a few hours of break in between) because I was not using an ideal set up and also because it seems like the interest for the even has peaked a lot and I hope it will stay this way in the future :)
So I would like to automate the process of checking/calculating a bit using a website to submit the games you want to play and then calculating things automatically with the help of the Steam API which should save me a LOT of time.
With all the phishing going around would people be willing to sign up on the site? I promise I am not after anyone's details and I would use the same login method SG does.
The site would basically just be used to submit which games you would like to join in so they wouldn't have to be done manually by comment (or BLAEO) anymore and it would be basically automated updating of stats once you add the game in and the delivery of giveaway links so they can't be as easily leaked.
The things that would need to be done are:
I am not sure I could get it done by June but by July it should be more than doable.
Would you guys be up for something like this? Does it break any kinds of SG rules? All of this is still all hypothetical and nothing concrete has been set as I want to know what you think about it first.
Comment has been collapsed.
Considering you are doing so much work for this thread while already sorting out pa I think this would be a good idea which can help you. I still wonder how accurate you can get everyones stats like I brought up with the blaeo lists but I trust you got that figured out and using your best judgement. So as long as this is allowed and not breaking the rules I think you should try, be a lot of work to start with but hopefully it can help calm things down in the future and I'm sure if needed people would be happy enough to help you with whatever you decide to do
Comment has been collapsed.
I should be able to get the numbers a hell of a lot more accurate if I do this than I can get them right now as I can save the playtime/achievement numbers at the beginning and then simply just compare them to the ones at the end of the month. There would still be things that of course need to be done manually (check if it is indeed a SG wins, if the achievements all match up and if it fits the theme, manual playtime for games Steam is still learning about) but it should lighten the workload by a lot as the thing that takes the most time is doing the math, checking playtimes and waiting for pages to load (everytime I load/post a comment on the April page I have to wait about 20 seconds for the page to unfreeze because my laptop can't handle the amount of comments and scripts I have running lmao, lets not even talk about people with +5000 games in their libraries).
Yea it would be a lot of work but if the event continues the way it is doing right now (and I hope it will) I think it is well worth it to spend some time on + would be fun to work on a little project again :)

Hey, If you will need any help with frontend - I can help.
I'm quite experienced with HTML/CSS/jQuery, a little less with more modern JS stuff (like Webpack/npm...) And currently I'm learning Vue.js on my own localhost project (some different things, all related to Steam and its API).
The things that I make for myself look like this, and this.
The first screenshot is the "old" version of my project, and the second one is the "new" version - I'm currently re-making it with Vue.

Thank you, I very much appreciate the offer as when it comes to the frontend my knowledge is very very limited. I will contact you if I need help with anything. Both sites look cool and the first thing looks really handy as well! Definitely 100x than something I could ever come up with :)

I am willing to do it as long as people participating are fine with it :)
Appreciated! I will keep it in mind, thanks :)

As I've personally told you already I have no problem with it. And I think it would make it a lot easier for you, though it will probably be a lot of work to get it up and running. I would offer my help in testing since my coding skills are not that good. You know where to find me 😜
Comment has been collapsed.
Yea I did not expect it would take as long as it didn't take me anywhere as long the previous months, but in the previous months we also had a lot less participants (in April there was double the participants than in January and February). Mhm, if this works out all you will have to do is submit the game you want to play once and everything else would be done automatically afterwards, with little exceptions due to how Steam works (example: a winner would have to manually report me then hours + achievements of a game that has been removed from the store as it is impossible for me to see that anywhere).
Comment has been collapsed.
Technically you'd be fine with just a userscript instead of a whole website, right? Only real problem is that everyone needs to stick to pre-defined table formatting in their comment or else the script would fail for their entry.
It'd be pretty easy to write a script you could run on every reply to your main comment and calculate stats from that.
Although I don't know if Steam would like it if you'd make separate requests for everyone's selected games achievement pages, and I have no idea what data is available through their API so you'd not have to run a GET request for every game.
Comment has been collapsed.
Hmmm I didn't even think of that as an option as my knowledge of JS is pretty bad. Thank you very much for the suggestion! If support (I already sent them a ticket because I don't want to start working on something that might get me in trouble in any way) shots down my website idea I am 100% going this way.
You can do 100k requests per day on their API and the API should have all the info needed except for games Steam is still learning about (for those you can only get the achievements via the API and not the playtime). The biggest problem would be getting people actually format their comments properly...
Comment has been collapsed.
I just looked at Steam web API docs and one very easy, albeit messy, solution would be to to simply "scan" everyone's reply to your main comment for links which resemble https://store.steampowered.com/app/208140/
(could be done with a simple regex match) and from that make calls to GetOwnedGames (v0001)
for played time and GetUserStatsForGame (v0002)
for achievements and go build stats from there.
Only thing needed then would be everyone's steamid, which is not linked anywhere here on the SG forums. Easily solved though by manually keeping a list of steamids of everyone participating and match them to their SG usernames.
A proper website would be a lot cleaner though, but would also require a bit more work and added costs.
I'd be more than happy to work on it.
Comment has been collapsed.
Yep, I worked with the Steam API before so I kinda know how it works. It gets a bit more complicated than that however: I allow games that have been played before (up to a certain point, you cant join in with a game that has been 99% finished) or idled before so I have to also account what the playtime and achievements were before, but that can also be formatted into the comment.
A website would solve the SteamID problem pretty easily -> login with your Steam account and you can be 100% sure you have the right SteamID for the right person :)
I am still leaning towards a website as I think it would be a lot easier to keep and maintain a lot more detailed information about people participating and the games, will see what support says. And I don't mind the work and the cost. The work keeps the skills sharpened and helps you learn new thing and the cost, well servers are not that expensive and I can use it for other things at the same time :)
Once again, thanks! I appreciate the help and suggestions!
Comment has been collapsed.
The work keeps the skills sharpened
That's exactly why I offered to help haha.
I'm sure SG support won't mind as long as you're using Steam's OpenID, can't imagine having a problem with that.
Keep us posted, and again, if you ever need a hand I'd be more than happy to help.

When posting links or content, that content should not force users, encourage users through reward, or primarily exist as a traffic source for users to perform an action for promotional, commercial, or monetary benefit. Such actions include but are not limited to clicking a referral link, liking a Facebook page, following a Twitter account, joining a Steam group, completing a survey, or making a donation. (Please note, in giveaway descriptions we do allow users and developers to link to their related Steam Greenlight, group, and store pages, as well as their social media channels. Users are also able to reference their group giveaways when posting in the Group Recruitment category of our forum.)
This is the rule I am worried about because it is not to me the clearest thing in the world. But considering I get literally nothing out of it than saving a bit of time I hope it should be all right.
If you wish I can share the project with you once I start it (not expecting any help if you don't wish/feel like it, but if you decide to do so I would be more than thankful :) )

I'll give a shot to SOMA, maybe this time it will be less jarring, it would be great to cross it off from my backlog. ( I do think that it has a super flawed aspect but I'm in a super minority with that, but at least I know I'm not alone with it :D )

SOMA | Starting from 3 | Starting from 8 | great Sci-Fi with questionable design | Unfinished |

I am curious what you think the flaw is? I did not play it myself but I watch someone play it and gave up before the end because I found it boring and not scary o.o but maybe I just didn't watch it long enough.
Comment has been collapsed.
I found it boring and not scary
That, with horrible mechanics. A great (like classic-level great) sci-fi game hidden under the mandatory "monster chases you because it's Frictional Games" premise. The monsters are annoying blockades. I tried to explore - barely anything is interactive, and so many things are irrelevant - like finding a razor of the ship's first mate. Great, thanks game. Now back to playing hide and seek with the monster for 10-15 minutes because I went the dead end to check for items.
The monsters are always contained. So basically you have monster arenas between no-enemy zones where you very soon realize nothing can harm you, just a walking sim.
You usually have a "rebirth point" before monster areas. If you just run through everything just look for those saves, then into a monster, you will still only lose like 30-40s progress. Not to mention that monsters don't kill you. They CRIPPLE you and set you back to the rebirth point, so you limp around with extreme headbob at ~ half speed. And if you again get caught, you die, back to a checkpoint, likely still losing only 1-2 minutes. But no frustrating limping and such.
Basically they made a great sci-fi story worthy of Clarke of Asimov. A classical, clever sci-fi story about existance, transhumanism, evolution and individuality, then thrown in monsters that looks scary and act scary, but they feel like placed later because of the sharp change in the gameplay, to slow down the player by padding the game and/or add "gameplay" to a walking sim. Meanwhile the game mechanic makes it better to die to the monsters, than try to struggle and survive. It just makes no sense. Narrative and gameplay is not just not aligned, they are clashing because of the faulty design.
And I fucking love classic sci-fi when writers have visions, opinions, messages, but the gameplay is abominable imo. At least there is a mod in steamworks that turns off creature AIs, so I can play it as I'd like - in a superior walking sim format. And for that, I'm looking forward :D
( I genuinely thought I'm crazy with this opinion, until in one Podquisition episode all 3 hosts agreed on and named basically the same problems. I'm fine by not agreeing with others, but being in the far, far minority with a well-built opinion really made me think I missed something, or It has a subconscious psychological effect on me, idk.)
Comment has been collapsed.
Thank you very much for the thorough explanation! You (and those 3 people) are definitely not the only one with this opinion. I thought maybe I just missed something because I watched it and not actually played it but I guess not. The mod does it make it sound more appealing but still not enough to ever actually try it unless I manage to get it for free from somewhere.

Hmm, got a question. I have a game that would qualify for this month's theme (STRIFE), but I already played it in the past as part of last year's challenge.
The thing is, I barely played it (1 hour, and it was mostly for the MP achievment) because I lacked the time to play it back in August. Is it still liable to qualify for this month or do I need to play an unplayed game?

As long as the game is not like 95% beaten already you can participate with it (just please mark how much playtime you had before this month), it doesn't need to be completely unplayed :)

I wanted to give away something that was unbundled (and therefore there were not many giveaways for and not many people would have), would run on Win/Mac/Linux and was around ~10€ and many people had on their wishlists so I picked Finding Paradise, but Humble Bundle screwed me over since it was in the monthy and a lot of people will now get it that way. Would you guys still like a giveaway for it or do you have any other good suggestions for a giveaway that would fit that criteria? :)

I'm one of those who got it through the monthly and I'm very happy about that :)
But there probably are still people around who didn't get it and would appreciate the giveaway :)
If you still want to change it, here are some games that I think fit the criteria :)
while True: learn()
West of Loathing
Baba Is You

Thank you very much for the suggestions! All of them have a pretty decent amount of people who have it wishlisted too :) While True: learn() or Baba Is You are going to the list of options (either this month or the following months) because I can actually buy keys for those (surprisingly all of those have decent prices for the EU on Steam and therefore there are some regions that have 10% higher prices and I would have to region lock the giveaways).

Personally I would still be happy about Finding Paradise but of course it's possible that some of us win the game on other GAs within this month.
The Mac/Linux condition makes it a little harder, but this would also fit:

In April there was plenty of backlog progress:
Great job everyone! Hope to see you again this month :)
Due to timezones/people not being online 24/7 I am still accepting any edits/applications for April for the next couple of days (till the April thread is closed).
The theme for this month is
May the 4th be with you
Games that qualify for it are:
Star Wars games
Space games
Sci-Fi games
Games that have a "4" in their appID - if you don't know how to check the appID see below this list
Games that take around 4 hours to complete according to HLTB - HowLongToBeat website. Any of the 3 times (main story, main + extras, completionist) can be used.
Games that there is 4 of them in the series - can be whichever game in the series
Games where there is a character named May in it (or any variant of it)
Games a 4 year old could play - aka children appropriate games
Games with 4 way co-op
Games with 4 in the name
How to know the appID of the game?
Go to the store page of the game and check the URL (for example: https://store.steampowered.com/app/49520/Borderlands_2/ ) the number between "/app/" and the name of the game is the appID (for example: 49520)
Since pretty much everyone should find something they could play there is no bonus non theme option this month. If you really can't find anything to play let me know and if your percentage of unplayed wins is low enough I will accept normal backlog games instead :)
Leaderboard
The leaderboard can be found as the first comment and I will try to update it every weekend.
Here is a sample formatting for a table that you can use for you comments that would show all the data nicely. Of course feel free to add any columns that you would like.
You can copy paste the formatting for your comment here:
NEW: you can also link to a BLAEO list of games you would like to apply with in your comment instead of the chart, but in that case please link also link to your recently played list as well. If you need help with that let me know.
Theme for June
In the poll below you can vote which theme you would like to be the theme for next month. You can find the original comments here:
Through the eyes of a child
Board games
Music Day
Theme for July
Do you think you have a good idea for a theme for July? Leave it in the comments bellow. If I get more than 1 suggestion I will list them in the poll next month and the one with the most votes will become June's theme.
Giveaway
This month I will be giving away a copy of Finding Paradise to everyone who has beaten at least 1 win in May.
Samwise84 will also be giving away: Tropico 5 and Human: Fall Flat, thank you <3
You will receive the link(s) to the giveaway(s) at the end of the month.
Have already completed all your wins?
Then feel free to participate with your normal Steam backlog instead :)
