Mine is an Oppo F1. I got it for about a $100 last year and it's probably the best phone I've had
Pretty good camera at 13 megapixels, and a good amount of space to begin with, put you can put in another mini sd card for more storage. Might not be interesting to your buddy, but it has a one handed setting that's really helpful :)

I'll suggest any of Sony phones, and especially Sony Xperia Z3 Compact, it is very small and has not bad battery life

Seeing how my friend has been using a non smartphone for ages i gave him my previous one for cheap 2 years ago. Sadly that beast had 2 major problems. 1 being too big and 2 being a really shitty battery time.
Now i'm currently using an samsung xcover 3 myself and he seems to be really interessted as it has like 3x the battery time and being able to take a beating and/or water! Sadly the camera is pretty useless.
Any other phones you guys could think of that isn't super expensive? Going to look for a used one and the xcover can go for 75-100 euro or so used.
