What's your favourite game with a demo?

For my part, I'll say Above Snakes (https://store.steampowered.com/app/1589120/Above_Snakes/), which is a Survival Crafting Open World game planned for 2023. I especially love that the player makes the map.

Edit:
Here's the demos that I played! I keep on trying new ones, so I'll probably update this list a couple of times :)

Loved:

  • Above Snakes
  • Eyes in the Dark
  • Cult of the Lamb
  • Railbound
  • GOODBYE WORLD
  • Nine Sols
  • Backfirewall_

Not for me:

  • Terra Nil
  • NAIAD
  • Cats and Other Lives
  • GLITCHED
  • Glimmer in Mirror
  • A Guidebook Of Babel
  • We Stay Behind

Out of the 10 games that I tried, Foretales was my favorite. Midnight Fight Express and Brotato were also pretty fun.

Agreed. Foretales is a card game with great art and flavorful setting.

Has the adventure vibe and felt like an EA release for a demo.

just finished getting my badge. played 10+ demos in the end, not sure if i can play more. i don't think i'm suited to play demos with a very long playtime. these are the one that i enjoyed the most:

https://store.steampowered.com/app/1812090/Escape_Academy/ - an easy escape simulator with a story. took less than 30 mins to finish.
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1967510/Railbound/ - a puzzle game where you need to align railroad tracks. took less than 30 mins to finish.
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1868140/DAVE_THE_DIVER/ - harpoon fishing at the day, serving customers at night. i don't like the harpoon mechanic, but the restaurant serving thingy is good enough. i spent ~1h in it before the demo ends and i still want to play more.

it seems that games that focuses more on the gameplay and focused less on the story captivates me the most. i tried other games too, but i'm not fond most of them. disliked the gameplay in some and worried if i'm good enough to finish the full game in others.

I loved the Railbound demo, but where are the cute dogs from the banner? I want the puppies and the trains!

Come to think about it, you're right! I was interested in playing it because i saw the dogs. I completely forgotten about that after i played the game (and other demos right away)

Old Skies

A point and click adventure game, didn't realize it was Wadjet Eye game when I downloaded. The story in the demo was really intriguing, gameplay was good, and nice voice acting. Definitely looking forward to playing the full game at some point.

The ones I liked the most were:

  • Cult of the Lamb
  • Metal: Hellsinger
  • Potion Permit

That Rocket League-like Golf game was fun too, don't know how replayable it could be though

I really enjoyed the game: Boxville,
Reminds me very much of the game Machinarium which I really liked.
The demo is relatively short, but enjoyable.

Machinarium is an old favourite of mine, so I got to check Boxville out! Thanks!

Getting the badge was my favorite part!
I also saw that Destroy All Humans 2 Reprobed had a demo: I'm excited for that game, because I liked what I played of the original version, and I liked what they did to remake the first one.

I'm also hoping it comes on GamePass at some point, like the first remake.

These are the 10 demos I tried:

Game Demo completed Time Played Recommended Note
Escape Academy 0.5 h Yes Never been in an escape room but this is pretty much how I imagine it. More or less.
Melatonin 0.1 h N.A. Looked nice, wasn't in the right mood to play it longer.
NAIAD 0.1 h N.A. Controls felt weird; tried with a keyboard.
One Military Camp 1.8 h Yes The guide character popped-up too often for my tastes, perhaps because it's a demo/tutorial.
Potion Permit ? 0.8 h Yes Can't remember if I reached the end or not. Keyboard mapping was not standard and I mis-pressed a lot. Other than this, it has potential.
Roots of Pacha 2.4 h Yes Both Potion Permit and this gave me some Legend of Zelda/Stardew Valley vibes. I would have liked for it to be a little longer as to give me the chance to finish more things that I started.
Railbound 0.4 h Yes Pretty nice. Completed most of the levels without problems.
Terra Nil 1.0 h Maybe It was nice, hopefully the full-game has more options/variations to it, otherwise I'm afraid it won't be interesting for long.
The Spirit and the Mouse 0.6 h Maybe They clearly stated at the beginning of the game that a controller is recommended, however, I had not any available thus played with K/M. It seemed it had a nice combination of story/mission/exploration; sadly the poor control kind of overshade everything else.
Yi Xian: The Cultivation Card Game 0.0 h N.A. The game seemed stuck on loading. I was in a hurry and didn't keep it running long enough to know if it was really stuck or if it was loading. Sorry.

So far I've tried The Outbound Ghost, Old Skies and Mercury Abbey.

Enjoyed all three of them, so I've wishlisted them.

I might download a couple more that look interesting (I have my eye on trying Passpartout 2, The Fridge is Red and the new SCP game as well) but I don't want to go overboard because last time I downloaded a ton of them and didn't even get around to playing half of them.

  • The Heroes Around Me - adventure - nice atmosphere/settings and feels TT.TT
  • The Courier - adventure - the control... nope
  • Alice is Dead: Hearts and Diamonds - pnc adventure - nice game finally on steam, demo too short
  • Room301 NO.6 - puzzle/adventure - dk no eng language

Waiting eagerly for Gloomwood! According to the devs the demo is of a really old pre-alpha build and the game has come along a lot since then, but damn, I had a lot of fun!

Selaco and Anger Foot, everything else I tried was trash

The really sad part about the event is that it is not in the least curated by Valve so like everything Steam nowadays, some pretty cool gems are drowned in buckets of asset flips and trashware.

I haven't been a demo player since the days of PS2 but I did decide to try out some in order to get the Fest badge and I gotta say... I'm sad that nowadays demos seem to be just short glimpses into an alpha built of a game. The demos I had played back in the day were from finished products and accurately reflected what you'd get if you decided to buy a full game, but all of these were splattered with issues and notices that none of it is reflective of the final products, so calling them 'demos' feels useless to me.

All complaining aside, I did like Contraband Police and will keep an eye on it for sure.

Haven't tried much but Sweet Transit is my favourite. I always wanted to see a train game with Anno-like city management and transport. Old Sim City style isometric map also made me feel nostalgic.
