Heeey steamgifts people! Sometimes I like to listen to music when I play games, but other times I also like to listen to podcasts when playing games that don't require sound or too much attention (like strategy games).

Edit: Giveaway over, sorry you missed it!

Here are the podcasts I listen to (mostly NPR-related):

Judge John Hodgeman: John Hodgeman (from The Daily Show and was the PC from those Apple commercials) judges people's problems. Often featuring as bailiff Jesse Thorn (of The Sound of Young America/Bullseye).

The Moth:
“True Stories Told Live”. Great storytelling, sometimes from famous and semi-famous people.

Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me!:
NPR's weekly news quiz show. Very funny.

How to Do Everything:
The producers of Wait Wait teach you... well, how to do everything! Often very funny.

Intelligence Squared:
Oxford style debates on contentious issues, started in the UK and now there is a US version.

On the Media:
The subject is the media! No way! Yes way, its in the title!

Slate's Political Gabfest:
I'm a poly-sci major/junky, and this is one of the best political discussion podcasts.

Snap Judgment:
“Storytelling ...with a beat.”

Stuff You Should Know:
Two chill guys from HowStuffWorks.com talk about stuff. Super informative and interesting!

This American Life:
The great-granddaddy of storytelling.

Radiolab:
Get your mind blown, seriously. The only radio show I know of that comes out in *seasons, the production quality is so high.

So. What podcasts do you listen to/ would recommend? Can be any topic really, I'm always open to something new that I might really like!

It's actually interesting idea to listen to podcasts while playing games. When I'm playing and get tired of original soundtrack, I usually play similiar themed sountracks from movies etc. Still, like you noted, podcasts could only work for games that don't require much attention to sounds. Maybe will try it next time when I'll play Sim City or something :)

Now I want to play Sim City! I think I will soon. And some games (like inide games) have very short and repetitive soundtracks, so even if I like the music I want something else. Terraria is a good example.

This American Life and We're Alive are properly good.

For me, the spill podcasts are my favorite being a big movie guy and just listening to 4 friends talk with each other with proper chemistry feels right. It's stupid, crass, and eats up a good 5-6 hours of mine a week. Been a listener for like 4 yrs now and I still play certain games just to grind through and listen to a nice podcast at the same time.

Glad to know I'm not the only one :). I'll look into the spill, I don't listen to any movie-based podcasts and it looks funny.

I listen to the default sound the game has because otherwise, ruins experience but games like Tropico and stuff,I usually play music at a low volume. xD

Even if the game requires concentration,You sometimes dont notice the music playing because you are paying waay to much attention to the game.
I remember listening to Minecraft Podcasts while playing Garrys Mod though xD

Yeah, I get that. Even in strategy games it can be tough to pay attention to both, but I enjoy it anyway, some podcasts help me relax. Plus multitasking like that can be beneficial for your mind's function, kinda like having the tv on in the background while you do something else.

Its cool, I totally get that. It took me a long time to get into podcasts anyway, I thought they were silly in the light of radio/tv/movies/youtube, etc. But there are really good ones, if you have the time and attention spans :)

It seems that you really enjoy short stories, have you tried Escape Pod or Podcastle? I've been subscribed to those two for years, and highly recommend them. If you're a horror fan, they have a sister podcast called Pseudopod that might be to your liking.

Another fiction podcast I suggest checking out is The Great Detectives of Old Time Radio. That show runs several golden age detective shows a week, that you may enjoy. Because it has been running for several years now, it would give you a huge backlog of shows you could listen to, but you'll be able to jump right in without missing too much. I do have to warn you that the audio quality can sometimes suffer, but some of the shows he runs are well over fifty years old, so it is to be expected.

One of the newer ones I've found is Talkin' Toons with Rob Paulsen. He was one of the voices of my childhood, and a very funny guy. He does talk some on the voice acting industry, but also stories about working on cartoons and other fun stuff. What hooked me on the show was the very first one I listened to was a Q&A episode, where he did the entire episode in the voice of Pinky, from Pinky and the Brain.

The last one I really recommend is The Geologic Podcast. I almost want to call it a variety podcast, because there are many different things that the host, George Hrab does. Sometimes, he is really insightful, wondering why we are so attracted to candle light, or some strange animal. Then, he will have a funny skit, talking about New Year's Resolutions or something that happened to him at a gig, he is a musician. Just, don't go into it expecting to hear about rocks; then again, maybe that will be brought up.
