Hello!
I'm rather a veteran gamer. I'm 41 and have been playing games since late 80'. But, strangely enough, I have never been into strategies. For some time (it's my age I think, teens and pre-teens started to whack my ass in World of Tanks ;-) ) strategy gaming started to appeal to me. I like sci-fi themes and though I try some 4X games. I played Master of Orion (2016) a little (few hours) and liked it. But I hope there are some strategy veterans here, who can make a suggestion. Maybe this MoO is not the best one to start?

Thank you for your answers.

Which game should I play as my first space strategy (4X) game?

View Results
Master of Orion (2016)
Master of Orion 1
Master od Orion 2
Master of Orion 3
Sid Meier's Civilization: Beyond Earth
Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri
Endless Space 1
Endless Space 2
Stellaris
Endless Legend - well - it's not a sci-fi game, but I've read a lot good about it, maybe it's worth a try?
Galactic Civilizations 1
Galactic Civilizations 2
Other - please put the title of the game in a comment

Of all the games listed I only played stellaris and it for me was just okay I guess I wasn't big on the sci-fi space type genre, but I mainly gave stellaris a chance since was published by the same company of another 4x (I think) game that I liked and that game is crusader kings 2.

I've been playing crusader kings 2, it isn't really a sci-fi type game it is more historic in set in the Middle Ages but it is a good game I have like so far over 400 hours and only like 10 for stellaris.

CK2 and EU4 are actually “Grand Strategy”, which is distinct from 4X. In 4X you typically start alone in undiscovered territory. You explore the map while advancing your technology and building up your base(s). When you find other races/nations you then need to either befriend or eradicate them. These games are usually, but not necessarily, turn based. The grand daddy is Civilization.

There is a big distinction between planet bases and space based 4X due to the nature of the map.

Stellaris is a 4X game that borrows elements from Grand Strategy. It’s a rather mediocre 4X, IMO

Yeah, I guess I was wrong. I wasn't sure if it was a 4X, but I do remember it being called a grand strategy game.... and I myself wasn't big on turn base games and personally for me Stellaris was pretty mediocre, I mainly got it since decided to buy the monthly that included it to give it a chance, only played like 10 or so hours of it.

I guess for me personally for the only few 4X games that I've played, don't think I am a fan of them.

I agree that Stellaris was pretty mediocre. I actually think 4X hit its zenith a while back, and has been superseded by Grand Strategy. Land-based 4X started with Civilization, and Civilization IV perfected the formula. Every 4X after is basically trying some new twist, but isn't actually an improvement ignoring graphics and UI.

Space-based 4X was perfected with Master of Orion 2, and even more so than with land-based 4X, every game ever after is a recreation thereof, with some twist or another. I haven't played a single space-based 4X game that didn't have the same bones and structure as MoO2. Same game, different skin.

Civilization 2 is accessible and not overly complicated. Great entry level 4x game.

Master of Orion 1 and 2 are about equally good. MoO3 should be avoided at all costs.

Stellaris is a bit of a mess. It does some things very well and is incompetent at others.

Pandora: First Contact is a better Alpha Centauri clone than Civilization: Beyond Earth.

Thanks. You clarified some things for me. I'll look for a sale for Pandora on GOG.

OK. Once more - thank You all for all your thoughts and suggestions. I think I'll start with the classics - I'll play a few games in MoO 1 & 2. Then I'll try Alpha Centauri. And maybe Pandora. And after that - Endless Space 1. I think after that marathon I'll know which title (or titles) will stay with me longer.
