Ciri was a Mary Sue character before. I'm not sure she will be great for a whole game. She must have undergone the witcher trials at some point because she didn't have the cat eyes before. Also what happened to her teleport ability?

They probably got rid of it because of the game balance. We'll see how do they reason it, probably. (Can be related to trial of grasses).
Ciri fights in Witcher 3 felt overpowered to me because of teleporting.

However, unlike Geralt, Ciri will be able to open her portal (or how she travels). I'd like to see how will they implement it. They could use it as a fast travel mechanic but I would expect something else.

Its been about 6 or 7 years since I read the books, but I mean that her character development is having bad things constantly happen to her, and everyone she meets goes "oh you poor sweet thing let me take care of you". In the books Geralt spends half of them injured and out of commission.

And they didn't get rich when the game turned out to be a success.
On the other hand, it's one of the rare studios who not only fixed their mistakes but has kept expanding and updating a game they could have abandoned years ago and kept cashing on.

Not could but famously were, the details are all out there about how awful the development of both CP77 and Witcher 3 was. Corporate culture demands 100% of the product for 80% of the budget but somehow, despite every single person in the world experiencing the downsides of this on a daily basis, our instincts are generally to blame someone powerless instead.

The inevitable AI slaughter is probably deserved, hopefully the dolphins or the cockroaches will make a better fist of it.

It's more than instincts. It's in every aspect of our culture. The people in power make sure we have plenty of irrelevant people to blame for the problems created by capitalist greed so we don't actually blame them. And I don't mean politicians. I mean the ones buying themselves politicians and influencers to shift the blame.

The inevitable AI slaughter is probably deserved, hopefully the dolphins or the cockroaches will make a better fist of it.

Heh I was literally telling that to a friend this week. Dolphins and Aliens are probably looking at the emergence of AI and thinking "finally that planet will get a fair shot"

It's the fault of upper and middle management, not the devs. The management pushed for something that wasn't realistically achievable in the timeframe and budget given, and forced it to be launched before it was ready.
Now those same assholes in management have forced the entire studio to abandon all their technology and go with the 'popular' Unreal Engine 5 for their next game. Of course, if that goes poorly people will blame the devs again, like they always do.

I was really hoping for a Witcher game set in the past when all the schools were still existing and us being able to create our own Witcher and pick the school we want to be from.

I so want to play a big muscular Witcher wielding axes from Bear school...

I wonder how will they describe in lore reason for Ciri losing her powers and also being the only female that ever survived Trial of the Grasses. As far as I remember it was done on male kids only and the survival rate was like 20%.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Why would it matter male or female? It's not a strength thing. As a man I'll say this, try squeezing a 9 pound solid turd out of your ass and let me know which sex you think is able to endure more pain.
I'll be among the first to admit men are just genetically wired to be stronger than women but again that trial isn't a strength thing to my knowledge.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

You would have to ask Andrzej Sapkowski that. It is how it was in the books. Geralt joined the Wolf school and he trained with other kids and was one of very few that survived Trial of the Grasses. From what I remember Trial of the Grasses was created by a wizard especially with men in mind as to turn men into "monsters" called Witchers.

Maybe with some tweaks and changes it could work on women but still - they would have to show how Triss and Yennefer improved the whole procedure and maybe increased the success rate of that procedure also.

The books Trial of the Grasses is basically done only to young male kids and most of them don't survive it despite all the years of training that they go thru that is supposed to strengthen their bodies.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

In this instance I think you might be confusing strength or ability to lift/move heavy objects and such with endurance or ability to withstand/overcome pain and sickness and such. I never read any books but what I saw in the show was just kids laying in bed trying not to die. That's endurance not strength so I really don't see how being male would help. More about your mental fortitude and bodies ability to cope. Just how I see it.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I'm not confusing anything. I'm just telling you how it is in the books and how the guy that wrote the books and created the world in the books made it all work.

Yeah I can see that you have never read the books that is why you jumped from the woods with all that women and men pain tolerance etc. that does not matter in the books and word presented in them. Books don't care what you think about men and women and pain.

Well yes the Witcher show is just shity. 7/10 season 1 and then it goes downhill with all the lore 5/10 season 2 and 3.5/10 season 3.

Being male would help because the procedure was created by a wizard with male kids in mind. Another problem is Ciri age as it was also created with kids in mind as there are many steps to that procedure that destroy and rebuild body of that kid. From what books tell us only 2 out of 10 male kids survive the procedure and all women that tried this procedure died at step 1.

I just don't think you understand what I am saying at all and I don't know how to make it more plain. I just said I don't see what physical strength would have to do with it.

Comment has been collapsed.

I think I understand what you are saying. You said it yourself - you didn't read the books and you didn't played the games but you felt the need to wear a fedora and defend women because you somehow were thinking that by explaining the lore of the books I'm attacking them in some way or shape or form. That would be crazy to think like that.

I never said anything about physical strength vs Trial of the Grasses vs women in that world. You did. You created a strawman in your head that you went on defeating by explaining how it is wrong that the books author described women never surviving the trails because they "endure more pain" and that Trial of the Grasses is not about "strength" but about "endurance" while again - never reading the books.

I just think you wanted to defeat something in your head to feel better about yourself and virtue signal that you are a good person and defender of women but this is not Twitter. Women are not under attack here. Read the books instead of making your own lore in your head.

I'm sorry but you are just dishonest. You created a made up problem in your head that you also wanted to defeat in your head.

You said it yourself - you never did read the books and you never did play the games but somehow you try time and time again to make the discussion into men vs women, strength vs endurance etc. while no one else is.

"I said I didn't understand how strength had anything to do with it"

It does not have anything to do with it. You focused on strength and created a made up problem from it for yourself. You created something in your head just to defeat it in your head. What you don't understand is also what no one has said here - not me and not other people commenting and not author of the books.

You yourself created a "strength" problem and now you fixed it yourself. Good job.

I'm not an "belligerent asshole' - I'm just the guy that is calling you out on the bullshit that you have created yourself around this topic. I just like The Witcher and it's lore.

"You honestly strike me as some idiot that got lost on their way to Reddit, maybe you should stay there"

You did not read the books. You did not played the games. You know nothing about the world presented. And you created a fake problem to feel better about yourself. Imagine a book series that you like and then me spewing some bullshit totally not connected to those books or anything you ever said about them just to create a false problem that does not exist and to defeat it to feel better about myself. That would be idiotic right?

True. Trial of the Grasses is about mutation of genes. That was also the reason why they tried it only on kids.

I don't understand why this guy started spewing some nonsense about strength vs endurance and men vs women while also admitting to never reading the books and never playing the games and having no idea about the world of Witcher that he speaks here about...

For me it looks like he just tries to virtue signal...

She has Elder blood. CDPR can figure out how that applies to being a Witcher pretty easily I'd imagine.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Well we will see. According to books Ciri can't use Witcher signs or magic. In the books, Yennefer starts lecturing her, but after the accident in the desert, she loses any ability to use magic; Witcher signs are the lowest and simplest expression of magic, but still magic. Ciri only can use the gift of her blood, which is the ability to walk between worlds and even time.

Another important point, the trail of grasses is a forgotten procedure at this point as Geralt (which was actually confirmed in the latest book) is the last batch of children to undertake the mutation process. So it is a process that was lost in time.

We would have to see Triss and Yennefer and probably some other mages that have great knowledge about poisonous plants recreating this process and making it safer and somehow not mutating and destroying the body how it is doing in the books.

Maybe Elder blood moves Ciri chances of survival from 0-20% to 100%? Who knows. The point is they have to have a pretty solid lore behind it in the game.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

It seems to me that her raw power would shield her from dying. And maybe the act of becoming a Witcher strips her of some of that Elder blood power. A balancing factor if you will. Plus, they were trying to refine to serum so that less people died becoming a Witcher anyway. And...they outright told you at the end of Witcher 3 that she was going to be a Witcher. At least the ending I played through to.

I'd also add that Witcher 4 looks like it is at least a ten year jump from Witcher 3. Ciri looks much older and more mature. A lot can happen in ten years.

So, I think CDPR has a clear vision. And when CDPR reached out to Sapkowski to both include and honor him, he basically shit on them and the idea of games being relevant, so CDPR is certainly well within their right to shape the series however they like.

I wouldn't hold onto the books as canon. They don't even reach as far into the story as the games do anyway. And the writing in the books isn't as good as the writing in the games IMO. I was actually pretty disappointed in the books compared to the games from a writing standpoint.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I liked both books and games. I just can't wait to see what lore they created to nerf Ciri but also make her a Witcher. The ending you are speaking about is her wanting to be a Witcher. I just wonder how they were able to recover the formula and maybe make it better. I think that would be a work for many mages.

We will see when the game comes out what lore CDPR created and how good it is.

Still I would love to play a Witcher from like 500 years before Geralt - be able to pick my school and see new monsters that become extinct thanks to Witchers in the next decades.

That would also be cool, and maybe a fun side project for them.

I think that after Witcher 4 and 5 that would probably close Geralt and Ciri stories they could do something cool like that.

Let the game take place 500 years before the books = full artistic freedom. Making players pick their own school and create their own Witcher and make each school have unique fighting style - like maybe Bear being more about 2h swords and axes and heavy armor and strong attacks while Wolf about 2h swords and light armor and fast attacks while Viper about poisons and 1h swords and daggers etc.

Like each school having their own combat rhythm and different combos would be so cool and would make players want to roleplay and in the end finish the game many times each time as Witcher from a different school. Some schools more focused on just fighting others casting more Witcher signs while doing a combo with a weapon other doing a cheeky shot from a crossbow or throwing an acid or poison flask etc. Like each school should have their own moves making fighting look like a dance with surprises.

I think it's hinted at in Sword of Destiny that Children of Destiny, like Ciri, will not need the trials? Maybe I'm misremembering or paraphrasing.

ETA: actually I just checked and I was right. When Geralt goes to Cintra six years after Ciri was born, he is talking with Calanthe who asks him "‘Do you believe a Child of Destiny would pass through the Trials without
danger?" and he answers "‘We believe such a child would not require the Trials."

I hoped for a game where you could play as Lambert, Eskel or a young Vesemir. The story also messes with the trial of grass thingy as barely anyone that was alive at the time would be able to perform it, let alone decide to participate in it. Still, I'm quite skeptical, but maybe they will be able to come up with a plausible explanation.

In the books, Geralt already told Calanthe that "Children of Destiny", like Ciri, are believed not to require the trials so I think they'll lean into that. And it's book lore so I guess people will have to find something else to bitch about like "she isn't pretty anymore"! ;)
