So I decided to finally try and beat the franchise as I have never even beat one of them before/

But I was thinking of doing it in chronological order.

Now I found out that Genesis is the first game in order but I made it to the end of Darksiders 1 today.

If I were to put a hold on Darksiders, play Genesis, and then go back and beat the first game would it be considered playing it out of order?

No, you can do it. Some "official" order is

Darksiders: Genesis.
Darksiders 1 - prologue
Darksiders 3.
Darksiders 2.
Darksiders 1 - continue 'till the end.

Thought I read it as
Genesis
Darksiders
Darksiders 3
Darksiders 2

official.

Not much different. In the end your mind assemblies the timeline anyway.

So D3 is a prequel to D2?

That's a weird choice by the devs.
I assume they somewhat cornered themselves with the D2 storyline?

I've also yet to play thru this series, so this is rather interesting to know.

NB has it right, in both DS 2 & 3 War is still imprisoned, which is the Prologue of 1.

If you want more details there is a good DS3 Guide on Steam that has the timeline:

Also just FYI, DS2 might be a bit buggy. On my 1st play through it was a bugged mess but different PC with better graphics card and wasn't anywhere near as bad.

I haven't played any of the Darksiders games so far but I'm pretty sure that going by release order is never wrong, it'd be like saying that the only correct order for watching Star Wars is chronological rather than as they came out in cinemas.

Never beat games in chronological order, always play them in order of release.

Eh.
I recommend playing in release order, cos graphics-wise, I want to play the nicest looking one last, cos early games in a franchise can be painful on the eyes XD

I haven't played any more than about 30 mins of the first one, years ago. I think I stopped, cos they're kinda hard aren't they?

1st one isn't overly hard, but I am used to the genre.
I felt it only got easier as you progressed

I'd recommend release order, I think seeing how the stories interplay in each is appreciated better that way.
