Hello, I am looking to purchase a survival style game. Some of the things I am looking for in this game are:

+RPG Elements
+Crafting
+Multiplayer (Maybe drop in/drop out multiplayer similar to Dead Island? or just a giant world MMO style)

I thought I would ask you guys for suggestions as this will be my first game in this genre. Thank you.

I saw that one. Does it have these things I want in it? How forgiving is the gameplay for a new person to the genre?

Well I'd say pretty unforgiving if you just started.

Maybe play it with a few friends, just 1 or 2 to make things MUCH easier. You can dispatch who will be able to craft what and who goes for which kind of resources. The game is much more enjoyable then.

Survivalist. It doesn't have multiplayer, but stil have some light crafting and rpg elements, huge map, managing a base, nice story, shooting is challenging. It is ton of fun :)

Not yet, but it seems the dev is working on a coop mode.

I was interested in that, but I heard it was super buggy. You haven't had any problems with it?

Not a single bug. And i played the game before it was released on Steam. Actually the dev listen what people want and adding it. It's defenently worth checking out. I have pretty lengthy review of the game, but beware of bad english :D What suprise me a lot is the AI. It is quite competentwith dealing with zombies and people. Unless they are too many.

TUG cause it´s so cute
...and I guess it´s a good choice for starters. you don´t die all 5 minutes, you don´t need to eat all 10 seconds, but you can die and you have to eat

Terraria is my favourite survival-type game, and has all three of your conditions. It can also has different death settings so it can be beginner friendly or intense, whichever you're looking for.

Does the death settings effect who I can play with?

No

No, you can play together on different death modes. The options, by the way, are dropping money only, drop all your inventory, or perma death. Then there's also a boss you can defeat that will make a world more difficult.

Also, characters aren't bound to one world, so you can use the same character in single and a multiplayer world if you want.

Rust. You can drop out, but your body stays in the map. So you got to make houses to protect yourself so people won't kill you. But people can bust down your walls if they're bored enough.

Sounds intense. I would probably be "that guy" everyone beats down when he logs off.

I have tried 3 MMO survival games so far.

  1. Miscreated -> Miscreated is literally "miscreated" so don't buy it unless you wish to try endlessly to connect to its servers w/o success (happened on 22 of June - refunded)
  2. Survival: Postapocalypse Now -> Postapocalypse Now is in a very alpha stage too, the world is tiny, full of bugs and russian cheaters/flamers. Don't buy it too. (wrote this comment on my profile too - refunded too)
  3. Rust -> So far it's excellent, exactly the game i was looking for. Devs are more than active with weekly updates, community is large and clans are active and welcome to new members, servers are stable and w/o crashes, there are no bugs and the content of the game is huge.

Second person to mention Rust might have to watch a few videos on it.

I've been playing this since somewhere around Alpha 8 and it just keeps getting better and better. It's what early access should be. Some friends and I started a world a couple weeks ago on a rented server and it's a ton of fun fending off a feral horde from your base with 5 other people.

Project Zomboid if you are interested in Zombieapokalypse Games. Still in early access but aside from a story mode quite complete. RPG Elements, crafting and multiplayer all there. Quite hard though cause of permadeth.( for beginners theres a simple workaround). Something similar would also be "dont starve" no RPG and Multiplayer(yet) more crafting. Again quite hard with permadeath.

I Shall Remain, Subterrain (Early Access), Darkwood (Early Access), Frozen State (Early Access), State of Decay, Deadstone, Infectonator : Survivors (Early Access) looks interesting. You may check them out.
