Hey guys, I wondering about this.
If I receive a gifted game, but I am underage, what happens? Am I still able to install and play it? Or can the game be sent at all?

It would be greatly appreciated if you could help me, thanks in advance.

The only time steam ever checks age is when you visit the game's page to look at it's content, or go to purchase it. If you get a key, then it will work without checking your age.

I don't think steamgifts cares what your age is but I'm not positive on that.

We don't really care. We operate under the assumption that the vast majority of our users at least have means of purchasing things online, since they have Steam accounts with at least a few games on them, and presumably can get more. These people should all be at least 18 going by laws most places. There are some minors, who are presumed to be a very small minority.

We are not an adult-content-oriented site by any means, but neither are we a children's site or 'family-friendly.' We don't care about NSFW content as long as it is clearly labeled and not excessive. Linking straight to a porn video, even with a tag, might get you a suspension unless there's a really good reason for it, which I, frankly, can't imagine, but a random picture with boobs is probably okay if properly tagged.

That doesn't mean I would suggest going and making a thread for sharing that kind of stuff. If everything is handled properly with tags, probably no one would be suspended, though I wouldn't guarantee that. It would probably at least get shut down after a very short time, though, if for no other reason than some of the more prudish members would probably start to have a hissyfit. We're not at all worried about 'protecting the children,' though. Anyone stupid enough to let their kids browse the internet unsupervised deserves whatever they get, frankly.

I don't think games restrict playability according to age. People lie all the time. If the prompt asks for your age then put down 18. Do keep in mind, if a game was designed for older people then it does have some content that will/might be disturbing for you. Read some reviews to figure out if you want to play it now or keep it in your game library for later.
Some games have the option of turning down the lewd language or level of gore. If these options exist then turn them on and play.

Also if you are caught with a game your parents don't approve, they might take your steam account and ground your arse.

If this was a troll attempt then @%@#$%#$%^%^&$#.

when i was younger i just lied about my age, now that im an adult i still lie about my age, ahhh many websites believe i was born in 1900

also if your parents have a problem with the games you win, promise you wont play them and wait till your older and they dont care/have authority anymore
source: been playing MMos since i was 9

^^ This

I like to think whoever looks at the age verification thing at the end of the day thinks to himself "Man, who'd have thought that video games would be popular with geriatrics?"

Ok, thanks guys for your help. I have a friend that would like to get me Payday 2, but I am still a bit under the age limit. Thanks for clearing that up for me. :)

no problem, its less of an "age limit" as a recommended age guide, its like jurassic park being PG or PG-13 when if it was released by any other company but disney it wouldve been rated R

The rating system was made morso for parents, and those whos beliefs may conflict with the game

It depends which board provided the rating some are legally binding restrictions,

i dont think steam knows how old you are, it often asks to verify your age, so as long as you put that as old enough you can buy whatever. Gifts dont even regard how old you are, you can play it no matter what

If you are not even smart enough to pick a valid age in Valves joke of an "age verification" you should probably not play it.

It's not a joke, it gives Valve a upperhand if some underaged buyer complains about something, if you catch my drift.

No, I cant. This isn't a verifyed age verification at all and as a retrailer they have to make sure that their buyers have the required age to buy this game. At least in my country. Also all kinds of transactions with under 18 year old kids without their parents agreeing about it, are floating inadmissible here.

Steam neither has the authority nor the patience to ask for a valid ID (for age verification purposes only) from its users, so it asks for verification. If you lie that's on you, not Valve & that's all a judge cares I guess.

In the US, at least, and in most other places as far as I know, getting a credit card, prepaid debit card or any other means to be able to make online transactions requires that you be 18+ already, so having the ability to buy online is accepted as proof of having reached the age of majority.

Well in Portugal you can have a debit card at 13 and then you can use a service called MBnet to make temporary credit cards, which enable you to make purchases without risking your true account.

not exactly, i bought prepaid debits and those dont require you to be 18, i also have a debit and am not 18 yet

There would be no problem besides the fact that Valve will scan your computer for other inappropriate materials like pirated software and porn...so it would be better to play Fairy Solitaire until you have approximate 250 hours of playtime => that will override Valve's logs regarding your account and age verification.

If your parents do not want you to play games for adults, do not enter in giveaways for those games. If they catch you playing them it could be funny... for you.

If they do not care... why should we. Do what you want. Just read the FAQ before you start.
