Without the multiplayer, Planet Explorers will not be the complete package that we originally envisioned. Thus, starting next week, we'll make the game free. [>>]

Look at those negative reviews coming in from users who appear to have not given the developer's explanation more than a quick glance. :P

That said, since it's permanently free, this should probably be moved over to the General forum, rather than Deals.

There are negative reports referencing on this. Not having backups of a large part of the game doesn't look professional. If players bought it just for multiplayer reasons, I can understand their criticism regarding the current state of the game (though there was already enough time to make the purchase worth it).
And then there's the "I paid 100 bucks for it 5 years ago and now you're switching to FTP - scam!", which of course is nonsense.

I wasn't arguing negative reviews related to the matter, I was arguing the superficial content present in the reviews I happened to look at. :P

It's not because it becomes free, it is because we are forced to pay for a second time for a game we already bought.
I bought PE and now I have to buy PE2 again to access multiplayer, that I bought PE for. Why? Is it my fault that developer doesn't know what backup is?
They should give PE2 for free to all PE owners.
Cutting features from existing game and selling them again is not a legitimate practice.

Personally I would tag it as F2P rather than free since its "free on demand" and not a "no cost" license.

+1

"F2P" typically means an online game where the core game is free, but the publisher's making their money off of microtransactions. That differentiates it from just plain "free", which is a game... that's free. If I saw this listed as F2P, I'd assume it was like all the other paid games out there that have gone F2P in the past. I don't think most people are looking at games in terms of what kind of Steam license they have.

But I do know most steam users only care about +1 when there is a free game. And because of the license, this will not be added to library if you havent installed the game.

So yeah, probably most are looking at what license. Otherwise it would get more "thanks" replies then there is.

Edit: Actually, just checked and there was 0 :)

Steam would also disagree. "Free" games give you a license. "Free to Play" doesn't and is instead free on demand.

My point is this.

Do people generally use the terms "F2P" and "free" the way you're saying they should've been used here? That when they describe something being F2P, or just being free, that all they're thinking about is whether or not it gives a +1 to someone's Steam library? I'd say no, especially since not every game is even /on/ Steam.

The OP used "Free" here in the accepted sense, and I wouldn't say he was wrong for that. I'm also personally grateful, since this is a game I'm interested in playing now. (I really don't care about the online for this one, so that didn't bother me.) Seeing it tagged "Free" made me look. If I'd seen "F2P", I'd most likely have passed on it, which would have sucked. So when I saw complaints about how it was tagged, I figured somebody ought to be the dissenting voice. shrug

As far as I know the trick with 'hide game' is the only way, even though it's not pretty :/

In case of PE you could also buy the soundtrack to keep it in your library, but that's also not a very good solution...

I wish steam would just add this feature :/

I too had high hopes for it. I bought it early because I liked their idea. Hopefully they make PE2 better and learn from their mistakes.

They literally lost the multiplayer code, that's not professional at all, i wont trust them for PE2.

One would think they will have learned from this mistake. There are two kinds of computer users: those who have lost data, and those who will.

Doubtful.
The game ended up missing a bunch of planned features and content, and the content they have in place was a nonsensical hollow MMO-ish grind with no soul. They openly acknowledged that the game failed in terms of providing satisfying gameplay beyond the item editors, and so kindly offered every kickstarter backer a free copy of their next game "My Time At Portia" if they replied under the kickstarter update post. That felt more than fair. Only, almost nobody recieved a key for My Time At Portia and the devs then went on full radio silence regarding that subject.

And now this.
This may sound judgemental but this is becoming a recurring pattern of lacking foresight and failing to follow through on things.

I hope this wont be a too harsh response ... BUT ...
the kind of people who believe dev stories like this are the same people who back shady kickstarters, pay money to random gofundme scams, buy every new early access game that "looks promising" etc etc ...
Im not here to tell anyone what to do with their monies, all Im suggesting is that BE AWARE PEOPLE! :D

"We lost the server code mysteriously. Oh, also we didn't back it up coincidentally. Oh, we're now F2P. We're also making a new game which won't be free. Oh, what a surprise, new influx of people who'll see our ad for the new game"

Not saying it's some planned thing. But it's pretty tactless to just advertise their new game on a post about how their paid product is now free after they lost access to half the game.

I hope they're refunding the purchases from the past month to compensate their incompetence to the new buyers. It's an unfortunate situation, but in the end, it's their fuckup, not the consumers'.

It sucks that the game's multiplayer died due to a stupid mistake.
But it amuses me that many people who bought the game are more angry about the game becoming free
