Look at the list of open giveaways. Not a small percentage of them are from bundles -- usually either very recent ones, or even those currently on sale. Okay, so their creators might be just ignorant of the rules, or they might be stupid, whatever. But when I see someone posting something that obviously breaks the site rules (and more seriously, it often breaks the Terms of Service of the respective bundle as well), and making it a "contributor" giveaway, I seriously take that as an insult. It can be viewed as a statement "I have contributed and some of you haven't". I see it as hypocritical elitism.
rant over

Your thoughts? Do you report them, or are you getting too tired to care? Do you comment on them, or do you consider that "calling people out" (by the way, what exactly is meant by that phrase)? Does it affect how you create your own giveaways? Do you add their creators to your personal blacklists?

I would report scams that are openly scams, but I will not waste my time scouring the Site for scammers.
If I find one, OK, if not I go gaming ;)

I ignore them. If I don't like what I see, I move on. If I have reason to believe it's a fake or a scam, I report them. I don't lose sleep over things like these.

"Calling people out" means posting a comment on the giveaway accusing them of breaking the rules. That is not allowed. It's perfectly fine to use the report button to flag the giveaway if you think it's an individual key from a bundle.

Oh, really? You see, as a non-native speaker, I always thought it referred to unfounded accusations, or to disclosing people's identities in the forums. You mean to say that even if the description says "it's a key from a bundle", users are not allowed to reply with "it's against the rules"?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

In that case I think it's okay to say it's against the rules. If the user reporting has no evidence it is from a bundle, however, you may not say it's against the rules or say it's a fake giveaway

It does kind of amuse/annoy me when I see things that are most likely from a bundle being given away as contrib giveaways. But I don't actually DO anything about it.

Free games , why to bitch about it ?

Because in some cases, those games are "free" in a similar sense as the "free" games from piratebay. The Terms of Service should be in effect, and many giveaways simply don't follow them.

So people who buy indie bundles are now software pirates? Really?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Some of them are. And some people who buy bread or shoes are software pirates too. It usually depends on whether they are breaking software ToS (for example by allowing others to access their keys or download links).

Only thing that annoys me is those rulebreakers entering contributor giveaways of fairly large contribution amounts when in reality they have contributed a much smaller amount. I usually just report the giveaways and move on unless the user has submitted a lot of bundle keys, in which case I report the user to support.

It bothers me mainly because they become capable of entering higher contributor giveaways when they didn't actually deserve it.

Which then only encourages other people to do so since they feel it's unfair and want to enter higher contrib giveaways for nothing too. D;

It does bother me, because I find it unfair to those users who follow the rules. I usually report them, but there are sooooo many that I grow really really tired. :/
Also, reporting a rule breaker on this site (or on Steamtrades, for that matter, with the exception of scammers) does not really seem to accomplish much. I get the impression the mods don't really care that much to be honest.

I prefer people giving away bundle keys a million times to those just leeching (even if they could afford buying them).

Before the contributor giveaways, I might have agreed with you, but now, some people use it to cheat their way into those giveaways - cheating is worse than leeching in my opinion.
(Also, as this is a site for giving away games for free, leechers are kind of a given ^^)

Bundle or not, a lot of the bundles have repeat keys. Everyone has a chance to buy the bundles. There is no scam going on. One bundle game won on this site wont cripple the bundles, as well as the probability the winner would have bought the bundle over one game. Report the giveaway if you care. Don't call them out or make a thread to feel like some internet hero or crusader. For every reported giveaway I see, I see 1000 entries...

Game with no use + giveaway site = useful game.

It's scamming since the bundles tend to flat out say that the keys are for YOU when you buy them. The problem also now particularly lies in the fact that they get false amount of contributor give away. Like one up now from a current bundle gives the person a free $10 contributor points for disobeying the rules and spending likely $4 on the whole bundle.

"There is no scam going on"
When people break the site rules to use bundle keys to artificially inflate their contribution count so they can then enter higher value contributor giveaways, I'd say that is a scam.

It's not fair for the others who don't break the rules though, especially with the contributor giveaways and what not.

As a person who was ignorant, and did give away bundle games (To which, I am trying to make up for), it does annoy me. Ignorance isn't really an excuse, and often times absolutely is not ignorance. I'm usually very insulted if they've been on steamgifts for more than 2 months, and/or if they've entered more than 200 entries. Chances are, after 200 or so entries, you've seen a lot of "This is not allowed! Bundle giveaways are not permitted!" comments in first couple comments of a lot of your entries.

I know i don't have to. I was banned for a short while, and i was never asked or pressured in any way to make amends. Just felt like bad karma. I wasn't comfortable with it. Site is about giving, and community. I've won a few things, and I'm grateful, and i WANT to give back.

If someone like this wins one of your giveaways, ask for a reroll. Their contributor value doesn't mean squat if giveaway creators police their winners.

Permalink

We honor rerolls if the user has bundle key giveaways. We expect to have a new way to handle bundles soon when the admin is available. As of now, there are hundreds of giveaways every few hours and it's getting to be very difficult to keep up. We suspend those that have truly exploited the system, e.g. someone submits 10 bundle keys in a day, instead of focusing on every single giveaway, which is very time consuming. I understand the frustration here, believe me, I've been dealing with it for months, but things should be changing soon in a big way.

Sooo then basically if they submit one a day its fine? Would explain why users with 20 such giveaways are allowed to stay.
Also, its nice to know that we can at least get giveaways rerolled if users are exploiting the system and havnt been dealt with.

I've reported over 100 users directly to support forums either for multiple offenses of individual key giveaways or for boosting (private giveaway with 2 entries (or 1 if they're ignorant of how it works)). Out of all those what pisses me off the most is when a user is clearly submitting bundle keys yet they have some lie about every giveaway about how it's legit. I saw one user (not mentioning names) submit a giveaway for the iTunes support DLC for Beat Hazard and said he BOUGHT it on another site. You can ONLY buy that DLC ON Steam or through the old Bemine when it was active. It isn't for sale on any other website (that I've been able to find, at any rate, and I did check all the big websites as well as google searching). It also pisses me off when they use bundle keys to promote something.

They do the same for other bundle keys that are not even steamworks. I've seen a couple even claim "I bought it on X site", yet the site doesn't even have the game listed, let alone for steam xD

Yeah, it kinda insults me too. It's not a legitimate contribution to the site, yet you're forcing me to contribute to enter anyway? Yeah... no. That's report time. I can't count how many things I've reported now. It honestly pisses me off to see people getting into (and winning) and contributor giveaways when all they've gifted are individual bundle keys (I've seen some $100+ contributor giveaways go to people with lots of bundle stuff. Great, eh?).

The site started getting flooded with keys immediately after the contributor giveaways were added, so it's very obvious they're just trying to cheat their way into contributor giveaways and not just an honest mistake anymore. Mistakes/misunderstandings don't piss me off. People cheating their way into a contributor status do.

I tend not to worry about it too much. I generally give people the benefit of the doubt and assume they're trying to be generous and just don't realize they're breaking the rules. I'm sure I'm often wrong about that, but whatever.

The one thing I've seen a few times lately that's really pissed me off is people submitting The Ironclad Collection as one of the individual games in the bundle, because it strikes me as a pretty blatant way of trying to get around the fact that the collection was devalued to 1 point in an effort to get more contributor status.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

(To be fair, in this particular case, some of them might be innocent. In the drop-down list with games, there are individual "Ironclads: Whatever" games under "I", but "The Ironclads Collection" is hidden far away, under "T". Of course, even properly labeled collections are against the rules, if they're from the bundle.)

I stopped reporting because there's just way too many. Instead, my giveaways now have a rule if 75% of the winners giveaways are single games from indie bundles, I get it rerolled. Only had to do that once.
