I have enough money left to get one more strategy game this winter. Trying to decide between these 4. I like all sorts of strategy game 4x or otherwise so that is not really a factor. Just looking for opinions on which of these games other people have enjoyed the most. I do subscribe to Humble Monthlys usually so if you think one of these might get bundled soon let me know. Looking to keep it around $10 so that might eliminate some higher priced games. I did just get Xcom 2 as my expensive purchase this winter.

Edit1: Well thanks to a very friendly awesome person. I have Darkest Dungeon to play myself. Such a great community. I'll have to pay it forward myself with something sometime.

It's one of those games that kicks you in the guts as hard as it can, then makes you want to get back up and ask for more.
I should add as a note for the OP to check out some gameplay of it on Twitch. There's always someone playing it.

According to the reviews that game can only be liked by hardcore masochists due to it being very unfair and too reliant on RNG (some claim its reliant on RNG even more so than FTL) with a lot of frustrating features/mechanics. Some also claim the game starts feeling tediously repetitive after a while.

What do you think about those claims?

um, those are pretty much the characteristics of a rogue-like

Are they characteristics of a traditional roguelike? Yes. But there are plenty of non-traditional roguelikes which are not too unfair and rely on skill a bit or a lot more more than on RNG.

I haven't played Darkest Dungeon, but I played FTL, and while bad luck does happen, smart decisions (aka skill) make a big difference, and I can usually get at least close to the end every time.

Having played quite a number of rogue-likes, going back to the very first rogue, the genre tends to be masochistic - it's not about winning, but about how long you survive. likewise, they all start to feel tedious and repetitive after a while. Then you stop playing for a while, it'll be enjoyable again when you come back to it.

it's rare that I've encountered a game that truly is unfair, in the way that was implied above. Certainly not in a game with a good reputation. On the other hand, I've always liked challenging games. Hell, I even made it 2/3rd through Ghosts and Goblins in the days before save games and even tried my hand at Wizardry IV

There's definitely a good bit of reliance on the RNG factor, but a good measure of skill in knowing what characters to take on what missions, using particular "unworthy" characters to farm gold for your A-Team's equipment, and such.

There's quite a lot of traditional strategy involved in a lot of the encounters, and the RNG factor, in my opinion at least, just adds to the tension of those encounters. If worse comes to worst, you can always abandon ship rather than fight it out.

As far as the repetitive nature -- I found the various dungeons and encounters varied enough to keep me interested to see what the next dungeon held. That's really a subjective sort of thing, though, and I'm sure some will find some of the encounters repetitive.

I've only got Endless Legend out of those so I'm not really in a position to compare. But for what it is worth I did think that was a great game and I don't regret picking it up at all.

I've heard so many ppl praising Darkest dungeon. I myself curious about how good is endless legend. Rarely heard about 2 other. So Endless or Darkest i say...

If the only criteria is Strategy, have you considered Hearts of Iron 4? :)

I should have specified around the $10 range. Darkest Dungeon current sale price is probably the highest I want to go. I'll give it a look in the future.

Aw, alright. With Paradox games it's usually best to wait a year or so until they've fixed all the bugs, anyway, so that works out.

Same reason for me too, I'd say darkest dungeon out of the other three.

Endless Legend or darkest dungeon would be my picks but Endless Legend has all those DLCs much like a lot of the other games similar to it.

Hope you're not planning on relying on that poll- Darkest Dungeon and Endless Dungeon have gotten a lot more coverage than the other two games, with Thea not having gotten much at all.

I've only heard good things about all four, and with them covering such different gameplay approaches (and all being a bit unique in their own right), I can't really offer any advice myself. :X

Thea and Darkest Dungeon probably have the best replayability of the lot, at the least, though ED's co-op may give it the best shelf life of all. :)

Yeah I figured Thea would get shafted in the poll. I do love that the Thea guys give away the DLC for free. I feel like Thea might be bundled soonish but yeah Thea and Darkest are in the lead for me right now.

Those'd be my top choices as well (though like you, I think all of them look great). Thea especially looks like it'd give a rich gameplay experience, though Darkest'd be the one I'd right up and play right away, given how accessible it seems [well, as much as any roguelike is accessible :P].

Just came here to suggest getting XCOM 2, but I see that's taken care of :-)
Haven't played any of the poll options, so I can't give you any insightful recommendations, I'm afraid. Anyway, enjoy your holidays and XCOM!

Personally I'd sort them: Darkest Dungeon > Endless Legend > Thea: The Awakening
Never played Hard West, it has the least appeal to me.
