Picked it up for $15 over Black Friday at Wal-mart. Aim cheap if you decide to get it (I'm not a fan of supporting Blizzard or Wal-mart but at that price I feel like I stole it from both of them).

Single player campaign is massively different from multiplayer I'm afraid ):
It is pretty competitive in mp unless you don't care about ranking etc. although custom games and 3v3s are fun/casual
If your friend has HoTS he can spawn you to HoTS access only in party though so you won't be able to 1v1.

I kind of stopped playing after HOTS came out. There are still players with only the base game, but ranked leaderboards don't feel as competitive as they used to be and it is much easier to get to higher leagues, which kind of kills the fun for me. I am probably going to buy HOTS soon.

It's a great game for anyone who enjoyed the first. It takes a lot of time to hit the level of most online players, but I have a group of IRL friends who play SCII AND have lives, so it's competitive between us when we do play. Just don't pay $60 for it.

I forgot to say: I would buy it at 20 € (around 25$) from the blizard store, the sale expires the 1st of January so I'll take my time to decide, meanwhile continue to post, you're helping me out :D

Single player is too focused on mediocre story telling. It has a few good moments, but far too many gimmick missions as opposed to straight up base building and combat. Also whatever plot paths you choose do not carry over into the expansion in any way shape or form, heart is the swarm goes the lazy way and says "this path is canon, the other one isn't". If you are going to get Starcraft 2 for the multiplayer, getting heart of the swarm on a cheap deal is also the better option; more opponents and more variety.

In my opinion, the single player itself is worth the twenty dollars. The campaign had decent length and you could easily replay it a few times.
Even though I haven't played Starcraft II WOL for a while, but I'm assuming the online community is still very active. I remember enjoying countless custom maps and game modes. On that end, there's almost limitless content to be enjoyed.

Hi, I was wondering if I should buy SC2:WOL. A friend of mine gave me a 7 hours code to try the game out and I enjoyed it, but since there is an expansion (Heart of the Swarm) which I do not plan to buy, I wanted to ask you if there is enough people on Wings of Liberty and maybe if there is any site like Steam Charts (http://steamcharts.com/) in which I can check how many players there are online at the hour I would be playing. I really like rts and I used to play them a lot while I was a little kid, now I'm out of this for something like 6-7 years, is Starcraft too competitive to get started again? Or will I be skilled enough after the single player campaign to start some multiplayer games?
