Let's say you're trading games, someone comes and says "Hey, I'll give you my TF2 inventory for that game", you look and it's a fair deal. You go through with the trade and everything is fine. Turns out that account was hijacked and the person gifted the game to their own account after the trade. The owner of the hijacked account retrieves it and discovers all their TF2 items are gone so they contact support. Support sees you have the items and you're banned.

What did the person do wrong in that situation?

Look at your trade history and hover over the TF2 items and gifts you've received. They should link to your inventory if you still have them, if they don't they've been removed. If they've been removed they were most likely from a hijacked account. Since you've been trade banned, it should be in the same state as 3 months ago.

I had it happen and I received the ban a few days after the trade. I assume the owner retrieved the account and contacted support who saw the items on my account and banned. They didn't tell me squat, but I eventually figured it with the method I mentioned and told them. They looked into it and saw that I traded Dead Space Pack for the items and they decided to reverse the ban. The items were sent back to the owner and I never received my Dead Space Pack back. I imagine if I had sent them a game key afterwards it may have been a lot harder to reverse as it would have looked like I was simply clearing the account out.

Worst part was it wasn't an amazing offer, a bit overpay since it was items, but that's it and there was no real way to determine it was hijacked.
