Supposedly a fun management game with an interesting twist. I'm not a big anime person myself, so it's definitely harder to get into as well, but I can imagine that helped a lot for many of the positive reviews.

It was played by popular youtubers when it got released and it's pretty cool and unique-ish take on the tamagochi kinda gameplay, which might have convinced low levels to buy and comment on it. Maybe.

Thanks for your reply - you're the only one here who has actually taken the time to give an intelligent answer.

To the others that apparently got triggered by my comments:
I found it difficult to see from the videos and screenhots that there is much in the way of actual gameplay, and so I couldn't take it seriously. It appeared to me like someone thought the idea of DokiDoki Lit Club mixed with an overabundance of internet cliché would make for a good game. I have not written the game off - I'd probably try it myself (though not buy it for that price) - I'm just surprised this has a lot of reviews when so many solid indie games will struggle to get even a fraction of that number.

It is very fishy. They pleased a certain group of people, so it gets extra attention over other indie games. Even OP, has 2 hours in this game and this is their favorite video game on steam, out of the 711 they own, enough for them to change their profile picture to it.

IMO as an anime enjoyer, this 40% discount is nothing special, it is just a year old, but $10 for this specific game, I'm not really interested. The genre tags for the game point out who the audience is. Hentai sells, hence why at first we had so many standard RPG maker games, and now they're all hentai rpg maker games.

Would be much more interested in Persona 4 or 5.

Hentai sells

I mean the game is sort of lewd in a sense You can go down a "cam girl" path I wouldn't really call it "hentai" as although a lot of it is insinuated, personally I don't think it really breach that level to call it hentai. Although some very obvious nods are made to it (There's literally a sex button) - It's all off screen and this does sound omega nerd but its really more about the development of the character throughout the actions then the actual sexual actions itself and the gameplay treats it like that through the endings.

Although people are horny mfs so yeah probably hentai probably fits for most people.

Hentai doesn't mean nudity. It refers to sexual perversion, and can be relayed in various ways.
Most people just think it means porn.

That's because it is the actual definition of the word as opposed to your made up definition.

hentai
[ hen-tahy ]

adjective
noting or pertaining to a subgenre of Japanese manga, anime, computer games, etc., characterized by explicit sexual themes and imagery.
noun
such themes, imagery, or works; hard porn.

https://www.dictionary.com/browse/hentai

Noun
hentai (countable and uncountable, plural hentai)

A work of anime or manga (or any similar medium) that contains heavily sexual or pornographic art.

https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/hentai

You seem to have it confused with the etymology, which is were a word comes from, which is not the definition of the word.

Actually she's right. It's a Japanese word, better look at a Japanese dictionary.

They are not, the actual english definition and the way it is used is not the same as the literal translation for the japanese word.

From the wiki: 変態 (hentai) is not a genre in Japanese; this is a development in English.

It could be right for English (though neither Cambridge nor Oxford added it to their dictionaries), as a person who know both languages this doesn't feel right. The meaning is way narrowed down in the translation.

It isn't right for English as far as I can gather, as the wiki states that "hentai" isn't a genre in Japanese and we are talking about "hentai" as a genre in this context I can only conclude that the literal translation for the word "hentai" is not applicable here. I think the English language uses the word "hentai" as a loanword from Japanese, so while it's definitely derived from the Japanese word, it doesn't use the same definition. No English speaker would ever call a perverted person, a hentai, or hentai seiyoku sha hence the definition doesn't fit.

Yeah, I guess we can say it's a loanword since it defines something entirely different in English, at least the way how people use it. Hence the confusion here, from a Japanese perspective the game has hentai qualifications. However genre of the game is not hentai since it's used for cartoon porn.

You might want to use other sources as Yours are defined by "Official" meaning, while the Hen from Hentai is also means weird (変わり) and also has valid usage in 変態 as Weirdo
Not to mention the influence of media which always refer it as porn

I'm not debating the literal Japanese translation (or Japanese language), I'm debating that there is a difference between the literal Japanese translation and the English definition since the Japanese language doesn't use the word to define a genre while the English language does. Wikipedia and official English dictionaires are reliable sources.

I mean technically yeah going by the actual meaning of the word in japanese, although i'd probably disagree when the word is being used in an English (Can't speak for other languages but I'd assume some level of similarity) sense as it's lost a lot of the original meaning from it's original language and at least from experience is only used to name pornographic media. That's why a lot of times you'd see people calling stuff "fan service" or "lewd" because Hentai just doesnt fit under the westernised definition that it's gained since japanese media started going international, where "Hentai" was really only saved for the strictly nude or sexually explicit. Although it's hard to come up with a strict "definition" since it's literally just a word ripped from another language I personally believe from how it's used nowadays that the sexual perversion or lewdness which were previously encapsulated in the word is sort of lost nowadays.

The game was produced by professionals. The game designer is a known writer about mental illness, YTuber culture, and other ero works. The character designer is a famous female ero mangaka. The art was all done by a pro ero pixel artist. The OP singer is the legendary KOTOKO.

The retro aesthetics is a design choice to look like a galgame from the 90's, despite streamers being a modern thing. It's not a poorly made meme or quick cash grab game. They spent over a year to develop the game, even pushing the release date by another half a year to polish and add more content. Most AAA games nowadays won't even push their release date by a couple of days to fix game breaking bugs.

Theme song of the game is also playable on Muse Dash, that surely adds to its popularity I guess.

Also, even though I have no interest over streaming stuff, I find the pixel art of this game great but it's kinda expensive for a 2 hours game.

you seem to be easily triggered too, if you blacklist people, which don't care about stupid steam levels of reviewers for a non scammy and well liked and well sold game 😅

(both are a valid opinion -> i don't care about levels, you do)

i ever wondered, what people randomly blacklist someone. now i know, people which disagree with someone in a discussion, nice. i guess it's better to don't express ones opinion or disagree. just stay silent.
i mean you could agree to disagree, but what do i know.

sure thing, i'm usually very rude. very rude to think it's stupid to discredit people with low steam levels for reviewing a game(which could be called rude too, lowering peoples credibility, because they don't invest in worthless steam levels). Which also means new players on steam, registering for a new game and reviewing couldn't be taken serious.

"22k people have actually bought this?
Is this the next meme game for the masses?"

^- this too. Yeah, people bought this game, probably a lot more. So what? Let them they buy and play what they want. Niche, meme, whatever. (yeah, i know - you later added that you would play/pay for the game too..)

Could understand this argumentation for a scam game. But this isn't a scam game btw.

what bozo cares about steam levels when looking at reviews?

i skimmed through the reviews. they are total normal for a weirdish (management) anime game.

and the game is obviously no scam and fleshed out in a niche.

i'm not interested for the price, but it looks funny and cool, i guess.

of course i have, but it's not only about steam level

and i have seen many detailled and awarded steam reviews by "low-level" profiles without profile picture in the past.

it's clearly not a scam game, which got review-pushed. a blind person could see that.

That is the number of reviews, not the actual owners of the game. The estimation is, at least, there are around 284k buyers:

Actually it was 22k that reviewed it which is usually a small portion of the actual purchases. The ownership estimations are 260k+ on the low end and up to 1.2 million on the high end. I lean towards the low end on this because people will make meme reviews but I would bet it's at least twice the number of reviews

not memes, anime girls, never underestimate the power of animated girls.
and not only that, she's a streamer, so you're getting the Vtuber crowd too.

I have been closely following the game ever since its initial release and would like to provide insight into its current popularity.

  • The game was introduced during the height of the Vtubers trend (during the COVID-19 pandemic). As the game's central theme revolves around the daily, behind-the-scenes life of a Vtuber, so many people picked it up just for this reason only. Another reason is that many real-life Vtubers streamed it frequently, thereby increasing its exposure to a wider audience.
  • The visual and the OST are really good (especially the soundtrack) imo, gameplay although it doesn't innovate anything, but gets the job done
  • During its initial release, there were few games that could compete with it in terms of quality.
  • It's an anime game...

I actually do want this game. I enjoy games that are outwardly cute and bright and colorful but are actually dark in content. From what I've read this is a social commentary on internet culture and mental health and actually very good.

But I think I'm going to wait for now and hope it gets cheaper in the future.

Uh, since I seem to be the only one in here to have actually played this. I liked it. It's a small anime management game where you try help getting a (mentally ill) streamer to be popular using whatever means necessary. It has multiple endings depending on what decisions you make. It's appealing to a small number of gamers but I can recommend it if you think you would like it.

About a month ago? ....... Has it been a year since it was launched?
This was released to the public.
It seems that people who have been considering buying it for some time are now buying it.

Well, since the lyrics are in Japanese, the strong interpretation would be that these people are "well aware of the otaku culture of the Showa and Heisei eras".
