Hey! :)

semester just started and I have to write a paper this year! Approx 30 - 40 pages.
If you've ever written a scientific paper, you know citing and all this stuff isn't fun :(

However, our prof gave us a few topics to choose from, and one of them is online games!
I'm not even bound to that, for example I could also write something about the Steam Community Market for example.

Any great ideas?
I'm interessted in what you guys would do :)

Oh, and I think I lost a !

Have a great day everyone

A great idea would be some MMO games as some have great history behind them :D Though I just google what a scientific paper is sooo don't really know about it that much. P.S Thanks for the cookie :)

In what class you have to write your paper, on what level?
I can give you many topics on astronomy/physics but I don't think that is what you are looking for.

Edit: If you are annoyed by citing use a tools for that. BibTeX or something.

Multimedia Technology Fundamentals, next one is my bachelor thesis :)
Has to be something related to media, augmented reality or something like this :)
Even with BibTeX or Citavi, I'll never like it, but thanks

Steam market + evolution of prices, depending on sales/bundles...[1] seems quite nice.

Other ideas:

  • Impact of new technologies on markets. E.g. mp3 -> piracy (companies did not use mp3 in the begining) -> itunes (grabs huge market share) -> other companies follow -> streaming; + limitations on synamic range -> HD music (24bit/96+kHz)
  • gambling surrounding games: CS item betting,... -> gambling addiction
  • legal points of streaming across the world: e.g. use of music in streams
  • development of difficulty in video games; "old games are hard, new games are too easy"

If you want to go into hardware:

  • physical limits on CPU production technology (e.g. diffraction limits)

[1] e.g. cards dropping when game gets bundled; summer/winter event cards dropping each day.

You can write about how different age demographics affect online gaming, I bet there are lots of information about that to take from already.

Oh, cool. Then I may suggest something similar to this. How the team color affects the performance of players.

I would like to help, but I am not very good at coming up with topics. Thanks for the cookie!

You should analyze the online games from each perspective: the market like you said, the fact that it improves your social skills because you interact with others, it develops your logic thinking and reactions, it isn't that easy because it takes time to master an online game, some online games offer also single player campaigns for players that are new to the genre and let them develop the required skills before entering PVP and so on. I'll write more if I came across another idea. Hope I helped you! GL & HF writing that paper!

I've read a few suggestions above. I support the idea of writing about cards and the market they generate.
Also: nieches in global multimedia market, i.e., survival of RPG Maker games, indie games, mock-up games (e.g., notGTA5).
I, personally, would try to explore the history of how dependant is the market on hardware. I feel a few years/a decade ago games were driven a lot by the latest technology available. Now it looks more like it's genre demand driven (I certainly don't mean major titles/companies here).

"If you've ever written a scientific paper, you know citing and all this stuff isn't fun :("

^ you've answered the question yourself - whatever has a decent "sauce" :-D
and isn't a complete contradicting/controverse mess ... to come up with a question should be the easy part

Try Bartle Test. The basics are pretty simple, but you can expand it on your own game experience...
