I personally enjoyed Red Alert 3 a lot, especially in co-op. Unless you're looking for a serious game, that is :p

Crusader Kings 2. When it gets on sale, you have a perfect fit.
If you watched Game of Thrones/read A Song of Ice and Fire, and love backstabbing strategy with the individual characters in the main spotlight, this is the game for you.
Alternatively, get it on Amazon for $12.49, in the Paradox Bundle, alongside with 4-5 other games, some of which are quite noteworthy.

I liked the game, but it loads VERY slowly on my pc. It take minutes to get to the main screen. C'mon, my system is really old, but I can't believe this game put my Q9550 on its knees.
It feels like the game thinks it's the first run after installation. Any tip, Giga?

Not sure if anything can be done, the game is not optimized for multi core support. From what I've seen, more RAM = win for it. My gf has the a i3@3.1, and 8GB RAM, takes 14 seconds to load. I recently got more RAM (had 2 GB, now Windows sees 3,25) and the load time have improved significantly.
Other than that, try editing settings.txt in Documents\Paradox Interactive\CK2.
One of this values set to 'no' may warrant a faster load, most notably hires terrain one, maybe sky (do clouds show on the map or no):
{
draw_terrain=yes
draw_water=yes
draw_borders=yes
draw_trees=no
draw_rivers=yes
draw_postfx=no
draw_sky=no
draw_bloom=no
draw_tooltips=yes
draw_hires_terrain=no
draw_citysprawl=yes
}
(I can't format it properly, but there should be an underscore between 'draw' and the other word, but this forum just shows the word in italic)
So far, Paradox made performance optimizations in quite a few patches for other games, maybe CK2 will get some love too. Sadly, multi core support looks like a no go until they develop a new game engine.
Also, if you have UAC enabled, it may not be able to remember the map cache and have to create it anew every time the game starts (Vista had that issue IIRC) - which would impede the load speed of the game.

AFAIK Crusader Kings 2 had multi-core support from the beginning. It was added to HoI3 with the newest expansion as well and Victoria 2 might have it, too, with it's last expansion.
I don't think there is much one can do to decrease the startup time. It takes about 5 minutes for me, too, the first time I start the game. If I quit it and start again it's significantly faster, though. THe next time I start it after shutting down my PC is slow again...
But there are no real loading breaks once the game has started, so it's no big matter for me.

Warcraft 3 is the best strategy game I have ever played, by a long long stretch. You won't find it on steam but you can pick it up for like £1 on ebay. both Dawn of War games are great, they're quite different to eachother so have a look at them both before you pick one up. Red alert 3, as someone already said too, is also great. Very like warcraft 3 (as is DoW1 actually :P warcraft 3 is just the best strategy game. Get it if you dont have it. Warcraft 3)

Age of Empires 3 Complete Collection, it is expensive but add me to talk if you want it.

Command&Conquer series, Disciples II and Heroes (but really very cool and awesome Heroes is only III. And it's not in Steam). StarCraft I and it's too not in Steam. Also Football Manager not bad, but it's 'another' strategy. And Comapny of Heroes.

£10 was enough for Civ.V GOTY on SummerSale (that's where i got him). You were late only a few days :X
If you can't join a little more to Empire Total War buy Rome Total War - Gold. Old but good.

Frozen Synapse. The multiplayer is great for short strategy action. Plan your moves and take your time. Then while waiting for your opponent move you can do something else.

Europa Universalis 3. It's set in the period from 1400 to 1820 and you can play any country you like: Resurrect the Byzantine Empire, colonise the New World as Norway or turn Ryukyu into an Asian powerhouse. It plays quite different every time.
The Complete version which includes the first two expansions costs 10 pounds at the moment but if you buy it, you should later buy its last two expansions (Heir to the Throne and Divine Wind) as well as they add a lot to the game. Oh and you can find lots of excellent mods for the game in the official forums.

Warcraft III is my personal favorite strategy game, but if you wan't something newer you could get Shogun 2 or Dawn of War

Instant classic! Love this game! A bit dated but still better than a lot of the newer strategy games. That genre's been slacking the last few years.
