I should add, that the browser seem to be unable to find the Steam page or load it. I always get rerouted.

You should do malware scans. If you're using Windows, make sure that Steam hasn't been added to the hosts file in C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc

Already tried Malwarebytes and it didn't find anything. Running a virus scan with Avast atm.

Forget avast, avira and AVG, and all other free antivirus. They are good to prevent some viruses and malware getting in, but they are all horrible in removing them.
Get another computer with a CD.burner and download an antivirus boot cd. These are Linux-based boot discs where the OS is modified to act like a giant antivirus that auto-scans the hard disks. Use this to remove the infection.
Although it may have been a simple script to rewrite the host file. Check it, edit the affected entry, save, and do a cold reboot. If the host file remains as it should be, then there is a chance you are safe.

Yeah, I did a full scan. Turned nothing up, but I will investigate some more.

Did you try malwarebytes? The free version is pretty neet and will find even the smallest crap ( helped my browser with a similar problem...)

Saw the box for rootkits wasn't ticked in Malwarebytes. Re-scanning now...

That seems very plausible. What can I do about it? As in how do I proceed?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hosts_%28file%29
Check there for the location of the file depending on OS.
Open with whatever text editor you prefer. remove any entry for steam.
Save as plain text. reboot

The text editor has to be run as administrator to do the edit.

Happened to me. I downloaded a thing for cs:go server, and when I opened it, it opens steam, and must type my username and password but steam doesn't open .. I went to steam website to redownload but it doesn't open too ...
You must change your ip I guess .. if you don't want to download anything to your pc
Go to Chrome Store and type Browsec and download it .. ( it will be downloaded to chrome ) and when it finish, click on it and click on Protect me .. and choose which area .. United States United Kingdom .. etc this will change your ip.

If I had to guess, it seems like your hosts file got altered in some way, to include Steam's ip. Here is the route of the hosts file, id you are a windows user: C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc Open it, and check if something is wrong. If you don't have any cracked software installed, you should only have the comments part, starting with #COMMENT HERE.

I'm on Win and the hosts file seems to be ok. I just see the # stuff and under that I get:
xxx.x.x.x localhost
::x localhost
*x = some numbers
Should I delete this?

An entry for 127.0.0.1 localhost should be there.
That's a standard definition and removing it can mess things up.
Any other entry for localhost can cause (probably unwanted) re-routin and you probably want to remove those.
Ps. create a backup copy of the file before making any changes.

Yeah, that was how it looked. I didn't change that.

Hmm.... Malwarebytes didn't find anything. Virus scan is still running but hasn't turned up anything so far.
I did what KH4L3D suggested and I could reach Steam again and changed my password. I could access my account and everything seems to be in order. On top suddenly Firefox and Steam browser can reach the site again, too. Dunno what happened.
Let's hope I fixed it somehow... Thanks for all the help guys!

Did it fix itself, after you turned it off and back on again? (restarted PC)

It seems my Steam account got hacked after I clicked on a link, I thought safe. I'm usually very cautious about this stuff. but well...
I already posted a ticked to Steam to lock the account and tell me how to proceed.
The other problem, I hope you will be able to help me with, is that no matter which browser I use (even Steam app build-in browser) I cannot reach the Steam page anymore. I even tried a fresh install of Chrome. So right now I cannot reach my account from my computer. Any ideas how to fix this?
Thanks in advance!
