What is Free for Players?
Campaigns
New Light campaign (for Veterans, you can pick this quest up at the Quest Kiosk, located next to the Postmaster at the Tower)
What is Not Free for Players?
Campaigns
Shadowkeep (can be found on the Moon)
Beyond Light (can be found on Europa)
The Witch Queen (can be found on Savathun's Throne World)

So some campaigns are playable, some are not.

Not sure of any benefits or anything, I don't play at all, but according to a friend who use to play on BattleNet, they lost a LOT of gear since then ... assuming the F2P transition.

It's not really free to play. Good game but I'm not spending money every year on some new expansion.

I don't know about now, but the wole mergre process happend looooot of time ago, they sent mails and announced on media that you had to link you accounts, i don't know if it had a time limit, so you might already lost that old account.

I had the base game back in the day with the 2 expansions that later became free, you will be able to complete some part of the story but you wont be able to get it all or advance after that because of the game power system is locked behind DLC and the year payment.

There is no single player story anymore because they removed a lot of the older content. The story was confusing as hell anyway. They also took out a lot of free content most likely to get players to pay for the DLCs. Like someone else said, it's not really free to play. It's more like a demo. This is an expensive game to get into. The DLCs cost almost as much as a full priced game but have nowhere near the content so I don't even call them expansions. It's a shitty "live service" game which means there's season passes, in-game shop microtransactions, and terrible grind.

I don't recommend the game for new players because there's no single player story you're basically just thrown into this sandbox with no clue what to do. Also bungie is a shitty company. Besides removing free content they also removed paid content. DLC people paid for. That's when I uninstalled the game. They said they weren't going to do that anymore but they're also not going to restore the paid content. So I wouldn't give them any money. They're a bunch of thieves.
