I guess Mount & Blade series? Not that its that ugly, but even when was released it was already outdated, it just doesn't age well visually, but damn, those are good games...

Most Arcen games supposedly have at least a dash of design brilliance, while at the same time featuring what looks like a we-had-no-budget-and-no-taste-either programmer art style.
Now that I think about it, I bought AI War a million years ago and haven't played it yet -.-

Wizardry VIII has already been criticised for its outdated graphics when it came out back in 2001, but it is just so much fun to play in an universe where science (interstelllar travelers) hit a high fantasy world. You had 15 classes and 11 races, which allowed some very exotic combinations, like a faerry ninja or a "wookie" tinkerer.

Another problem of the game is that the early levels can be really difficult, especially as a magic user.
With respawning enemies that to some scale upwards to the level of your party (IIRC), the road to the first town could become so challenging that your only choice would be to flee from the mobs that were patrolling that particular area.

Not at all. I didn't play 1-6 and found it too hard to navigate through the Wiz 7 world when you only see a few feet wide and everything looks so similar. Nevertheless I have gotten something in the magnitude of 300h out of the last episode of the series.

Ugly is not the same as old. There are games that always had bad graphics, even on release date. Others only aged poorly.
In other cases, is a matter of style. Can't say that VVVVVV is ugly for having C64-era graphics.
I think that Unepic could fit in this category. I find the graphics really unappealing, amateurish, and the animations are rough and clunky. But the game is solid fun. The same happens with "Who's your daddy?"
And last, my all time favorite game that was so ugly on release, that people made a great effort to improve it -MORROWIND (the models, the world was stunning)

Mount and Blades. Bannerlord seems to break that cycle thought.
Maybe S.T.A.L.K.E.R.?
Seems like a lot of the people in the thread are just naming indies with a pixel art style. I don't think those actually count because they were meant to look as they do and in most cases look good with the minimalist style... Some of them anyway.

Do you know any game that's actually very good despite being incredibly ugly to make anyone believe (maybe including you)?
