Old, but what immediately came to my mind is Portal 2.
Next is Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime.
► WTF Is... - Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime ?
TB & Genna Play Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime (Bit long, but totally worth the time. Couldn't stop laughing. XD)

I've always liked to play local multiplayer on HoMM 3 with friends.
I saw other comments "don't starve" has coop called "don't starve together" (I mentioned it as well). It's kind of standalone dlc, but your significant other has to have a steam account. When you buy dst you get a second copy for a friend. :)

Stardew valley.
A calming and very forgiving farming game that lets you both take it easy if you want, or go all out if you prefer.
It's good for casual gamers like me, but veterans will probably like it too.
It's also perfect for the two of you since multiplayer recently came out.

Now that would be a very interesting curator page for me, not all my attempts were successful with my significant other :p She likes to play with me sometimes but I have to find something casual, not constantly bloody, and with a relatively stable point of view (Human Fall Flat made her nauseous for example)
Amongst the successful ones : Brothers, Marooners, Overcooked.
Without co-op : Botanicula, probably thanks to its universe :)
So I'll probably stick with your casual list for now. The "games that require time" list here is mostly made of games I already play or wish to play co-op with but my best friends, far less "reluctant to pick up a controller", to quote your curation intro ^^

Yeah motion sickness is the reason my sister wanted to get Cuphead to play with her bf and then she won it... He played 5 mn. Great game. Awesome coop. NOT casual though esp for the occasional/beginner. How about fighting games? Mortal Kombat can be fun even for beginners and camera is still.

(5 days later, sorry)
Fighting games would sound like a great idea in theory but
1) She's not really a big fan of gore stuff ... and Mortal Kombat 's fatalities are kind of legendary for that ^^
2) I tried Lethal League with her, thinking it'd be a great idea. Well, I juuust forgot the sore loser/competitive part inside her, so I think we'll stick with co-op for now :p

Heh yeah MK is pretty gorey for sensitive souls
W ell, I juuust forgot the sore loser/competitive part inside her, so I think we'll stick with co-op for now
lmao reminds me of my lady. She loves to win and she loves to gloat about it but damn, she hates to lose**
How about the LEGO games? They are very often on sale for 5 bucks a pop and they're the very definition of fun co-op. No hard gameplay, no gore at all even in the "fights" and they are motion sickness friendly (tested on several people, except the Star Wars ones cause the flying scenes are a bit of a challenge if you get sick easy)

I was looking quickly at them a few days ago, especially the Marvel one (recommended by OP in his curation too).
It could be interesting to give it a try, especially if there is a nice discount during Steam Sale...or for 5 bucks very soon, since you were right (currently on sale on both HB & Fanatical)
Anyway, now it's wishlisted, thanks for the recommendation !

I guess Don't Starve is probably the best one out there. I used to play it with my roommate all the time. Then there's Trine 1 & 2 and Magicka. There's also this game called Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime. And Monaco, maybe?
Comment has been collapsed.
Trine 2 is extremely difficult if you want to go for achievements too. Trine 1 is much more forgiving (though last level can be a pain for those less experienced.)

I was actually talking about Don't Starve Together. And I think Terraria is also a co-op.

Stardew Valley now that the game supports multiplayer in beta. The Stardew Valley sub Reddit has many posts from couples sharing their experience usually that involves a non-gaming significant other.

just about any Farming game, aka Harvest Moon, Stardew Valley etc etc

This is a little unorthodox, but when I play games with my girlfriend, I'm usually the 'pilot' and she's the 'navigator'. By that I mean I play the game and she has a guide open to make sure I don't miss anything, or she looks something up if we get stuck. I do easier bits and she does harder ones because she's way better at timing things than I am.
It's a way to turn single player games into a multi-player experience, esp. for games with many moving parts to keep track of.

I understand your reasoning. I have a list for that specific lay out. Though, personally myself, I like my partner on the same level as me, so she can potentially contribute as much as I do. This gives her the opportunity to save me or something and that makes her feel really great.

You could always play in Brothers - A Tale of Two Sons. It is intended as a single player game where you control two people, but no reason you can't play together. :P

First of all welcome on steamgifts :)
+1 follower, i really like couch games, but we often have problems finding the right game cause of different skill levels. So your lists and review help me a lot.
Ideas: Towerfall Ascension: Has 2 player coop, 4 player pvp is always fun
EARTH DEFENSE FORCE 4.1 The Shadow of New Despair: It's a weird game, graphics are bad, menu looks like from a snes game, game is filled with bugs (in every way), but somehow this game is a lot of fun and you don't stop playing. Contra: Grindy and expensive
Puyo Puyo Tetris: Friend bought it recently, we had a fun 4 player-couch evening with it. If skills levels are too far apart, you can play as team vs ai
Suggestion: link to your giveaways here in the thread and this might help you with the formatiing of the urls

Earth defense force has 2 player splitscreen and 4 player online.
Towerfall has a 2 player coop campaign.
Worth mentioning: Resident evil Revelations 2 Far from the best RE games, but this game really shines in co-op. Campaign and raid mode. RE6 is actually not so bad in coop either. Covering and saving each other countless times is a nice bonding experience

IMO any game can be good with a significant other who's not that experienced with gaming. The trick is where the person is coming from.
Telltale games are a great intro to adventure games - great if there's a hook from a cinematic universe (such as guardians of the galaxy, walking dead)
The Sims is great for people who like soap operas
For mechanically minded, Cities Skylines is a good start
Or a history buff might like Crusader Kings.
someone who's into horror movies, Outlast, Soma, etc.
Really, what matters most is knowing the person well enough to ease them into something that matches their interests. But even then, you'd be surprised by what some people will flock to.
As an example, my sister who never gamed before or since, loved HOMM3, Diablo, and Duke Nukem.

That's true. But its hard to find experiences you can share. I like to be on the same level as my partner, so she can potentially contribute equal to or more to the game than I do. I don't like making her feel not important, I like when we're both equal with equal responsibility.

LOVERS in a Dangerous Spacetime!! Obviously this game was conceived for this very purpose and it's excellent. My boyfriend and I had a great time playing this one. I can't recommand it enough.
Also Battleblock Theater, it's a bunch of pure fun.
Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes should also be perfect for people who are not really into video games.
Very good idea for a curator :) Following.

Great idea for a curator! Telltale games were already mentioned in the comments, but I feel like all "experience" games would be great for your singleplayer list: Gone Home, A Normal Lost Phone/Another Lost Phone, Marie's Room, Simulacra, Doki Doki Literature Club, House Party, Last Day of June, What Remains of Edith Finch, The Infectious Madness of Doctor Dekker, Contradiction, The Bunker, Late Shift, The Witness, Orwell.

This is a great list of recommendations! I've been meaning to expand my single player shared experience list! Thank you so much! I'll be sure to look into all of these. And yes i do agree that all these narrative single experience games are grea to share.

is Ibb and Obb in that list? (I didn't actually take the time to go through all of it.) I know I played it with my ex when we were together and it was the only co-op experience she enjoyed with me.

Followed! I'm always trying to convince my SO to play stuff with me but I often have trouble choosing good things. This curator could help me a lot.
I don't know how much other less-experienced gamers will like it, but she actually really loved Rimworld. I even picked out some mods from the Steam Workshop with her that she had a blast with (which I think was her first time ever playing a modded game).

Thanks for your support! I'm sure during the next steam sale, you and your SO can look through the list and find something to play together. I had alot of trouble making mine play, but eventually, we found our games. We sank alot of hours into Stardew Valley. We are now currently finishing Nine Parchments, that game is a riot.
Sounds interesting, I'll check it out.

Followed! You definitely need to add Life Is Strange to the list! That was the first game I introduced my SO to (the only game she'd played before that was a little Wii Sports and Mario Cart). The setting of Life Is Strange, and its choices with consequences got her hooked. The only problem now is that the other games we've played since can't live up to it! We played Dragon Age Origins for a while, she playing the dialogue and I playing the battles and character customization (too complicated for her taste), but she was disappointed because none of the choices seemed to matter like they did in Life Is Strange.
Another good one we played together is Never Alone, a co-op puzzle platformer with an Inuit aesthetic.
EDIT: Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons should also be on the list.

Deathspank is perfect for this.
Also I think a new Toejam & Earl waa scheduled for 2018

Nice list of games! Wishlisted a couple of those, will look over it more carefully later.
I could recommend Castle Crashers BBT was already recommended and they both are incredibly fun, Rayman Legends and one of my all-time favourite game The Cave, or any of the Double Fine games for shared experience some of them might also be shared-screened.
edit: Oh! And definitely Spelunky and Crypt of the NecroDancer for hardcore gamers couples.

In the shared single-player category, I would recommend Beyond Good & Evil, Fez, and Half-Life 2 Episodes 1 & 2. Maybe the Mass Effect series if you have the time.
In the multiplayer category, Trine 2, the Cave, Rayman Origins & Legends, and Sonic & All-Stars Racing.
Great topic – good luck with your curator page.

Hey Guys,
I recently started a steam curator page to collect the best games to play with your significant other who's less experienced in gaming. Its basically a guide on how accessible local multiplayer games are. I mainly focus on games that have split screen or are local multiplayer.
https://store.steampowered.com/curator/32660802-Intro-Gaming-Significant-Other/
I divided the games into 3 categories, casual games, games that take more time to enjoy, and games that have no co-op but are good for taking turns.
I play these games on my PC, directly connected to the TV, along with an Xbox dongle that connects up to 4 controllers wireless so that we can play on the couch comfortably. But most of them should be great with steam link.
Let me know what you think. :)
