From that thread:

"I am not a lawyer, but I believe this is what you are about to face;

Unless you work for Valve, they will have no choice but to have their lawyers send you a cease and desist letter, because they HAVE to show that they have done everything they could to protect their trademark, "steam". If they do not attempt to protect their trademark, then they cannot keep it."

I am sure that Valve is about to send that C&D letter any day now. It's just that the people who do the scheduling for their legal team are the same people who schedule their game releases...

(Also obligatory correction because I hate repeating bad legal myths without corrections: That's not how trademarks work. You can't lose a trademark simply by failing to protect it. The only way you can lose it is if the word enters common use to the point where it is popularly used as a word for the generic category of good or service rather than just your company -- eg. Xerox becoming a generic term for all copy-machines meant that it was no longer trademarkable. No amount of other people using "Steam" to refer to Valve's service could ever cause Valve to use its trademark; but if lots of people referred to Origin as "a Steam" or something, that could make them lose it. Obviously there is no risk of the latter happening because nobody uses the word like that; and Steamgifts is clearly using it to refer to Valve's product, so it doesn't pose any sort of threat.)

Tobacco companies are using the word "steam" too, Valve should fight against them!!!

Why did I never see this thread? I remember only ending up joining because of the massive Faerie Solitaire giveaway.

I only joined SG 3 years ago, so I have no memory of the early months when I wasn't here.

Still, those were the days. Days without CV, when the sun shone brightly in the sky and little friendly critters bounded carelessly across the green forum meadows.

I sadly can't remember it since I hadn't discovered SG back then.
But it was interesting to read through the thread that started it all.
