And that's why I use a 4 fan cooling pad. Keeps everything cool. Seriously

THIS! I don't only share the same classy avatar, but I do the same. I own a MSI GS70 with a 870M gpu and it runs everything up to 2013 on high and 60 fps (except Crysis or ultra realistic games, Metro 2033 on Medium was still stunning).
Right now the GS70 comes with a 970M gpu, which is more powerfull, but in the end just with some decent graphics and a fluid gameplays is more than enough. The 840M is pretty weak though, at High you'll be playing a 30fps or less, if you need the mobility of a laptop then I would recommend a 870M or better a 970M laptop, if not then build a desktop, it would be cheaper and easier to upgrade in the future.

It actually depends on what you're aiming for. 840M is a great card if you're going for Middle-Level GPUs. If you wanna do high-end gaming, it may go out of budget, and in that case, one should build a PC, which is much economical. But if you need a laptop, then I think middle-level GPUs are great, as they satisfy your gaming needs and the laptop won't cost too much.

Sometimes, you cannot help it my friend. If he cannot build a PC, like I couldn't, he'll have to get a laptop. Also, cooling pads do help a lot. My previous laptop had it's fan malfunctioning, which turned out to be a manufacture defect, but thanks to the cooling pad, I was able to work on it.

There are tons of tutorials online, lots of videos of step by step building on youtube. Also there are places that they will set up the desktop for you for a fee ranging from $20 to $50 USD, it really isn't THAT hard anymore. On the long run it's better to have a desktop, also way cheaper than a laptop.

Desktops with no additional cooling than stock fans get just as hot. You just don't notice.
My MSI Gt70 DOminator can run Grid Autosport (2014 game) at over 100 fps on high settings and over 60 fps on ultra settings. Take a look at my 445 game library. I own many new games. All of which have never proposed any heat problems on at least high settings for my MSI laptop.
You probably have never even had a gaming laptop.
Only take this advice from people who have personal experience with a gaming laptop. Get the right one and you'll be fine. A desktop can over heat just as fast as a laptop. My laptop rarely sees over 70 degrees celsius for my i7-4810MQ and rarely over 65 for my GTX 870M. You really won't be able to run anything the last couple years on max settings. You'd have to go back a bit of years on a game to run it on max settings with that pc.

@Veinhem, flip the laptop upside down and plugin mouse USB + keyboard with VGA Monitor or HDMI :P problem solved :D

And ASUS ROG ARESIII proves that its the only way to achive best preformance is trough the desktop, but whatever you need to have your wallet full to buy a good laptop for gaming, so the economic and the best option is to buy a desktop.

Seems good enough. But make sure you upgrade the RAM to 8 GB. I myself have an HP Laptop with similar specs. Actually, the only difference is of the RAM and the HDD. My RAM is 8 GB and my HDD is 1 TB. The model is HP 15-p073TX. The graphics card is really amazing. And as our dear friends mentioned above, the heating up is a problem, however this model is quite cool. But the major difference comes from my cooling pad. I suggest you invest in a good cooling pad for the longevity of your laptop. I use a 4 fan cooling pad, which keeps everything great. The CPU and the GPU are powerful enough to run high end games. For the extreme ones, you can customize the settings and you'll be satisfied. Just don't forget the cooling pad :)

'Really amazing' isn't how I would describe a 840M...
http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/gpu.php?gpu=GeForce+840M&id=2873
Like all the above stated, if you don't need the mobility of a laptop there is not a single reason to buy one. However if you do decide to buy a laptop you do need to upgrade to 8 GB of RAM. Your laptop might even do fine... for a year or so. I say again, if mobility isn't an issue, buy a desktop.

I say that because it gives me an amazing experience mate :P. And yes, mobility WAS the issue in my case.

You're wrong mate. I play Far Cry 4 on ultra, and my laptop has similar configuration. Try lowering the AA to SMAA. It might help you
Comment has been collapsed.
Well, what about AA? Did you reduce that to SMAA or is it on TXAA or MSAA? TXAA might work fine, but MSAA can kill the framerate. Also, try switching the godrays to off. I'm sure that will help.

I'd say you might give it a try, but cooling might be a problem. Other than that, yep, upgrade RAM (up to 8 or 16 Gb, check the laptop specs, some don't allow more than 8 Gb of RAM), throw out the CD-drive (who uses that now anyway) and install an SSD in place.
(but I wouldn't get a laptop for gaming, if I had a choice)

Running Battlefield 4 on High with 60fps, ultra 30-40fps... Specs on laptop - i7 4700MQ, 8GB ram, and a 780m ... I would recommend going for another build considdering the GPU on that build, since it will not be able to perform even close to the level of what you are looking for. RAM in the games of today will rarely need more then 8GB ram, so going above 16GB will be a complete waste of money. Go for 8-16GB ram. ("system memory")
You should considder consulting a company that builds custom gaming laptops, for example the US company "Xotic-PC". They will be able to customize the components on laptops, or PC builds, for example if you want to buy some specific laptop, but want it with a stronger GPU, you can pay them to change out the CPU. Same thing if you want them to install extra cooling sinks, they will do that for you.
-Also, you mentioned you dont know how to build a desktop, well it just happens that there are companies that will set up a desktop build for you from the components you choose, for a small fee of 20-50 usd.... So if thats your only problem when choosing between laptop and desktop, considder using a custom build company for a desktop, since you will get more performance for your money when paying for a desktop.

It's been said before by others, but this needs to be repeated. Do not buy a laptop for gaming. Heat issues aside, there are technical limitations. you won't be able to upgrade your graphics card for example. So 2-3 years later you'll be stuck with technology that is not up to par with the current generation of games.
Besides, the "M" in "840M" means Geforce 840 Mobile. Mobile graphics cards always have worse performance than their desktop counterparts, not to mention that if you want to play games you are gonna need a graphics card higher than 840 when it comes to Geforce.
And even if you were able to upgrade, it would void your warranty.
Edit: If you are traveling a lot due to your job, buying a laptop is of course the sensible thing to do. But you still need a better hardware than the one you posted.

IF you want to play games at max/high Quality settings don't buy a laptop unless you've got thousands of dollars.
If you can't build a PC buy one from a shop that builds them. You can even have a PC built-to-order in some online stores according to your specs.
And you don't want a Dual-Core CPU. Some games won't run at all then.
Comment has been collapsed.
Look up a model with at least 8GB of RAM, and ditch the optical disc drive, you won't use it ever.
Comment has been collapsed.
I know somebody said he runs it at high, but at those specs i'm not sure you'd be able to run Far Cry 4 at all. I mean its 2Ghz dual core CPU, DDR3 VRAM and 4GB of RAM.
I'm not sure howmuch you are paying for it buy gaming laptops are about 1000$ or more so keep that in mind. Also if you are only buying laptop for gaming i5 CPU will do, you don't need to get an i7

It would be better if you had more RAM.
And about people saying it overheats, not all laptops are like that. My Lenovo Z500 (GTX 740m) never overheated, even on heavy use. I know a few of my friends who have better laptops and never said anything about overheating.

Memory: 4GB System Memory - look better 6 GB :) And better take i5 :)

To the people who are saying laptops are bad for gaming: sometimes you are moving constantly and need something comfortable to take from one place to another and a desktop is not good for that as you can imagine so a laptop comes more handy. I would prefer simply beign able to play a game, I don't want to play it on max.

"I would prefer simply being able to play a game, I don't want to play it on max."
Exactly this. I prefer performance over quality. Playing games on med-high have small visual differences plus lower temps for me atleast.
I rather see it at 50c than 70c. No fancy cooling stuff yet but hopefully.

Everyone here who's saying "laptops are bad for gaming, duh" probably think about laptopotatoes. #LaptopMasterRace.
As an owner of G750JH I can tell that:
So that's for people saying bad about laptops and now to your problem.
As for the laptop, I'd find something with more RAM and definitely a better graphics card. Unless you have money limitations, find something better.
I also see you wrote that you're a uni student so I think laptop is the best choice. It's true that for the same price you could build a better PC but you also have to remember about price of other stuff like screen, keyboard, speakers, etc.
In conclusion:
The laptop you've picked won't run games on ultra but as a student it might be enough for you. Find something better if you have more money.

+1
I'd also upgrade the RAM at some point 4 GB isn't enough anymore

its a great laptop. But you won't be able to play Far Cry 4 maxed out. You will be able to play it on low: http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-840M.105681.0.html

Unless you travel/move a lot DO NOT buy laptop as your main computer (and not only for gaming)... There are multiple reasons for that.
Laptops are much more expensive; they tend to overheat; overall performance is worse, because of overheating problem, they are usually underclocked, etc... Displays are usually bad in comparison to real monitors, and if something goes wrong, usually your whole computer is fu*ked, not just one component...
Then again, if you really need to play new AAA titles on a move, that's a nice machine, but don't expect it to last for too long (as an AAA gaming machine)...
My recommendation; buy a great desktop, and a cheap (maybe used) laptop to play older and indie titles on the move, if you really need to...
Comment has been collapsed.
It's a decent laptop. You won't be able to play every game on max on it.
Personally I would try to find one with a better graphics card. Unfortunatly that is going to cost you. http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/high_end_gpus.html
Also, you want more ram 8-16gb.
People in general are very negative about gaming on laptops. The main thing is... It is just really expensive. Laptops are more expensive and you can't really upgrade them (in general). What everybody says about the overheating. It's a little bit true. From my experience it is just that the heatsinks tend to get dusty (some more than others). If you open it up and clean it you are good to go again.
That being said, I have gamed on my laptop for years now and I will never go back to a desktop.
