Guys, I need feedback on my new build. I haven't bought it yet, so I was hoping that you could give me suggestions! :)

I'll play BF4 mostly, and yes, I choose a 780! One reason is I'm just a Nvidia guy and I also get the Nvidia holiday bundle!

Asus GeForce GTX 780 3GB DirectCU II OC (I'm not sure which 780 to get)
Asus VG248QE
Intel Core i5 4670k
Asus Z87-Pro
Kingston HyperX DDR3-1600 16GB CL9 (2x8GB)
Samsung SSD 840 EVO 250GB
Fractal Design Define XL R2
Corsair RM850 Corsair RM850
Microsoft Windows 8.1 OEM
Seagate Barracuda 7200.14 2TB

Whatcha think? I am hoping to run BF4 at at lest high-ultra with 60+ FPS, is this possible?

They should just rename "Forum" to "Potential PC Builds".

But if you really do want an answer, yes, it will easily run BF4 on 60 FPS at ultra settings, on 1080p or probably even 1440p.
Just use some benchmarking site, such as this one.

No, u need atleast GTX Titan to play BF4 at max. But seriously dude, I'm sitting here with GTS450 and these kind of threads annoy the shit out of me. No offense. Are you waiting for captain obvious to answer your question or what?

No you dont need a gtx titan to play bf4 max you need to do some optimization for the game for e.g in the instal bf4 did't instal thei're own direx x version and they limited the cores if you change all of that you'll get nice smooth gameplay on 680

He has a point though... It's bloody obvious that one of the TOP ~5 graphics cards at the moment will be able to run BF3 at 60FPS... It seems that these questions are like a dissease, as one is posted 3 more appear.

You realize that there are websites out there that are filled with people who build computers professionally? PCpartpicker.com is one. Your question of what else you need is probably better asked there.

I would rather go for R9 290 or 290x, its cheaper and more powerful, especially on higher resolutions. Don't be irrational fanboy.

You really don't need 2 TB for only 71 games. I have more than enough space on my PC left with my 1 TB drive.

Wait for Mantle to be released before you buy. Look at the R9 290X instead, since the Titan is just a gimmicky overpriced card.

That's a very nice rig. If you can afford it you should get the 780ti instead. It's been dominating so far. I noticed you don't have a cpu cooler down though what are you planning on using?

Dominating what exactly? 3 to 5 fps more than a 290X and plus 200$ yeah real dominance.

It just came out and is the fastest single gpu card. Performance will improve with new drivers. It has blazing fast memory at 7ghz and overclocks like a dream. On top of that you get a lot of nvidia specific bonuses like geforce experience and shadowplay as well as their new g sync technology. AMD doesn't make it compelling enough to buy their 290x which is ugly hot and loud. Nvidia is building an ecosystem around their hardware. Not to mention Nvidia has 300 guys who are going to different developers and working with them to make sure their games are properly optimized for their hardware. Add superb driver support to that list too and the 780 ti becomes very compelling even at a price premium.

That doesn't really justify the 200$ more for it. AMD has had no problems with theyr drivers for the past 6 months tbh. Shadowplay is only relevant to thos who want to stream or record which arent many. Besides who says that AMD doesnt work with the devs? And mantle could be a potential performance booster but we have to see how that turns out.

Superb drivers? Have you missed all the issues 400/500 series owners have had for half a year now and Nvidia seems unwilling to fix? Or that some owners of 700 series cards have had to revert to drivers from before these cards were even released?

All that talk of specs is nice and all but memory speed and overclocking ability mean little. And "dominating"? It's a tradeoff whether you want to pay 75% more for slightly better performance over a 290 or deal with the, admittedly, excessive noise. Or just wait for cards with custom coolers or just slap one on yourself.

Like I said I prefer the Nvidia ecosystem. There's no doubt that the AMD cards are excellent price/performance but not everyone wants that. Sometimes people just want the best. If you want the best you get a 780 ti because that's what it is right now. The best. Each manufacturer has their place.

I would suggest to get rid of the Samsung SSD 840 EVO, they are hopeless. Best option is to go for the Samsung SSD 840 Pro 128GB or 256GB models. Better speeds, longer life time, better type of memory as well.

1) VG248QE: Asus with TN matrix?? No, thanks.
2) Intel Core i5 4670k. Unlocked Hasfail with box cooler? Silly.
3) Samsung SSD 840 EVO 250GB? As were written before, better not to buy this ... , if you want samsung go for pro version.
4) Fractal Design Define XL R2: fulltower for such small amount of hardware? Better spend more for CPU cooler or get decent CPU.
5) 850W PSU, while your PC eats 400 on peak? Interesting.
6) Seagate HDD? Good luck. You'll need it.

^this. Plus, a crappy Corsair power supply. Ew.

7) 16GB RAM are a waste of money for gaming. Go with 8, that'll do. You can always upgrade the RAM in 2 - 3 years (which I don't see coming, honestly), before spending money on a currently useless gimmick.

Also, if you don't want to overclock your system (which I reckon, since you've selected a boxed cooler) go with an H87-Mainboard and a Xeon E3-1230V3. You'll have more performance for less money. And it doesn't have to be a mainboard in the 150€+ Price range. The more mainboards have on board, the faster they usually croak. Go with a Z87-Plus or Gigabyte Z87X-D3H, buy an adaptor for wifi if you really need it. Unless you don't overclock, then, and I mention this again, a Z87-board is useless.

  1. 120/144 Hz TN monitors are better for gaming then IPS/S-IPS/
  2. Overlock + another cooling is must buy for i5 4670k
  3. Intel SSD's are mutch better.
  4. Fractal Design Define XL R2 is good maybe too much big. Maybe R4 will be bettet.
  5. Definitely Overpowered. I will prefer some 650W Seasonic or something simmilar.
  6. As a storage hdd there is no big difference but I think some WD disc will be better choise.
  7. 8GB RAM is definitely enough for gaming and low profile if you take non-box cooling.

"get a decent cpu" ?. A 4670K is a decent cpu. If your implying an i7 then that is stupid it will give maybe 1 or 2 fps in some situations. He only needs an i7 if he is going to stream his gameplay and that is not even entirely necessary to do it.

You're wrong. There is no decent CPUs in hasfail series. Xeon is a smart choice.

If your thinking of Xeon E3-1230 v3 then its basically a 4770 with no graphic chip and cant be ocerclocked.

Did I said "no to haswell"? Oh, yaeh, I already said. So no v3. For example Xeon E3-1240v2.Haswell could be better, but I really doubt, that topic starter has any overclocking experience and will do operation on changing thermal interface under the lid.

Comment has been collapsed.

Yup, so why should he throw away his money for a CPU that costs more and does less than a 1230v3?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Probably because not everyone so tolerate for high temperatures (~80C) of CPU, like you? And I also like this amazing statement "does less than a 1230v3". Have you ever seen at least those CPU? Or you think, that every new generation is much better?:)

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

A CPu at stock voltage and 80°C still lives longer than a CPU at -10°C and higher voltage. Temperature, as long as in the double digits, has pretty much no effect whatsoever. And it's not like haswell is uncoolable.

As for the other thing: Do you really want to tell me that The Xeon 1230V2 has more overall performance than the Xeon 1230V3? Really?

"Seagate HDD? Good luck. You'll need it."

-_-

Actually no, I have many running for years, just a reliable as WD. An i5 is perfectly fine and will last a long time...

I agree on the power supply though, I would get around 550-600 personally because I like to be a bit over in case of anything or if I upgrade. Also yeah he should look into better screens, thats all.

Ok, your "many" discs are really solid statistics and one shouldn't look for worldwide statistics of failures. And again, if you were lucky and had no problems, it doesn't mean, that other people shares your luck.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Can you back up that statistic by any chance? I am not saying you are wrong but I have been building PC's for years for people and myself, have friends in the tech field and no one I know thinks this, I use both WD and Seagate, and rarely have an issue, as always though its best to back up important data on multiple drives or a cloud(Still not a fan of this though...)

Honestly I have had 1 of each die over the years(Good luck I suppose), 1 seagate and 1 WD, that said its best to research the exact drive, both brands have had duds. For example the Seagate 7200.11 was ****ing terrible and I forget which models but some WD were pretty damn bad also, but thats known and everyone I know pretty much avoids the bad drives.

Also keep in mind that Seagate acquired both Samsung and Maxtor not that long ago which are also pretty good drive brands...

If you are getting a "K" CPU (unlocked), I hope you are going to OC it. If you do, do not forget to get an aftermarket CPU cooler (or even a water-cooling set-up if you wish) to prevent your pretty i5 from exploding.

Next, I agree with your choice of ASUS 780. I know ASUS DirectCU II coolers do the job very well, while keeping the fan noise minimal. You can also expect to OC it and maintain stability.

However, are you sure you will be needing an 850W PSU? Unless you are planning to add in another 780 for SLI, or want to OC your GPU+CPU heavily, I feel that a 850W is a bit too much. Of course, it's up to you and there will be no harm in getting extra headroom. I am just worried that you may be on a limited budget.
