Similar thing once happened to my headphones (although it is very common among cheap supermarket headphones). Never heard about someting like this happening to the actual SPEAKERS which are supposed to produce loud noise without any trouble.

My steam froze today while I was trying to launch Darkness 2, so I reset steam and had to verify game cache. After I install what was needed to get darkness 2 running. I started the game up and it froze somehwere in one of the start up videos. I also had my volume all the way up and it was making a huge explosion like noise. So I waited for it to fix its self, but the noise got bigger and my laptop speakers blew up.. -_- Now they sound like shit whenever I try to play video or music..
