Pride month is coming to an end. At the end of last year I finally got my own apartment and unless something goes terribly wrong I donโt have to worry about not having stable housing for awhile. It took me a bit to realize that now I don't have to worry about being โtoo muchโ or making people upset just by existing. Previously I felt like I had to be what other people wanted me to be because if I wasnโt Iโd lose my housing but also the people in my life. I donโt know why I care about family that are never going to accept me no matter how much I โtone it downโ. But it still hurts every time Iโm not invited to a family event while everyone else is or I am and they just ignore me or go out of their way to preach to me โto save meโ. The negative comments really get to me sometimes. But this year Iโm trying really hard to just be unapologetically me. I canโt change who I am but perhaps unsurprisingly when you arenโt insulted by people you live with daily your self esteem improves and Iโm starting to think that who I am is actually awesome. Iโve got a giant pride flag hanging on my wall and I actually feel proud. I've always been proud of all the other LGBTQIA+ people in my community, but never myself. This is the first Pride month that I am. I saw this post (attached image) the other day and it really spoke to me. Maybe others can relate.

you are actually awesome. I'm glad you finally realize that.
Self esteem is a misnomer because it rarely comes from the self, it should but it doesn't. It comes from the people around you. Or rather it comes from the reflection of yourself seen through the eyes of the people around you. So you have to find yourself people who will hold the right kind of mirror.
Unfortunately family isn't always the one holding the right kind of mirror. For a lot of reasons that have nothing to do with your actual worth.
I'm glad you managed to get away from a toxic situation and you are finding your self worth on your own. Find your people. Be who you are. And like that very wise teacher said, if they don't like it, just step it up. You'll find your people and your mirror soon enough.
