Never saw the need for something as over the top as Adblock. NoScript/ScriptNo is more than enough for me, and that way ads that aren't horribly obnoxious aren't typically blocked. I only really care about popups, ads that suddenly obscure content, and tracking shit. Everything else is just background noise, and I think tolerating that is the least I can do for content providers.

adblock & chrome & WOT= no viruses/malware/spyware on my computer
despite what anyone below me thinks this combo has been going on for a long time keeping me safe
wot is biased but it helps to stay away from certain sites
adblock isnt that extreme of an adon and i maybe saw 1 add in 3 months and maybe 2 popups
chrome is sandboxed, i made sure to have no other browser installed on mah junk
u must be on a mac?

Not on a Mac. I rely on noscript and Comodo for everyday security and that's enough. I do thorough scans every now and then and never come up with anything other than tracking cookies, and I haven't had a virus on a PC since I was a kid. It's just not that dangerous out there.

Last time I checked Chrome tracks the user and sends the data to google. I don't know if you can opt-out of it but in my opinion you'd be better off using Chromium on which Chrome is based on. It lacks the tracking implemented by google and is open-source.
I'm a Pale Moon (fork of Firefox) user myself as I dislike the direction of UI development these days. I have a 1080p display so I don't need any extra space that you get from having tabs on top (which is one of the "features" I really despise). To me FF seems to be the best browser security-/privacywise aswell with it's addons.
More on the topic, I don't see any ads on this site despite disabling AdBlock. Must be NoScript or RequestPolicy blocking them too.

I hate that Firefox is so bloated lately. I begrudgingly switched to Chrome about a month ago and noticed everything is MUCH faster.
I like the new UI of Firefox (you CAN go back to 'tabs on bottom', it's what I use) since it's more streamlined with the Firefox tab menu. Add in the new version of the New Tab page with the (optional) built-in 'speed dial' and it's pretty awesome... but slow not only loading pages, but loading itself. :(

Anything I visit on a regular basis (10+ times a week) normally gets an exclusion. I more have it when I am doing research papers for school and end up in not so ad friendly sites. Despise popups, despise flashing ads, and I can't afford the bandwith of stupid sites and their god damn video ads.
Used to go over my cap all the time, with AdBlock, keeping the same internet habits as before, I have yet to go over. Those stupid video ads use more then people think when you have a small internet cap. =/

Over the top? Adblock doesn't go far enough. What if a DNS server gets poisoned? Adblock will only filter the ads after it has downloaded and parsed the entire page's content. Its much better have a HOSTS blocking things on a TCP/IP level than waiting for the browser to do it. Plus it saves you bandwidth and cpu cycles.

Over the top in that it blocks EVERYTHING, which is unnecessary and selfish. Free content only exists on the web in the quantities that it does because of advertising. As long as it's a reasonable amount I see no reason to block it, and my bandwidth is not capped. NoScript is more than enough to block unreasonable, intrusive ads.

Everything from domains known to server bad ads or malware, and nothing from the domain you are actually trying to view. Advertising exposes your computer to many different forms of attacks so, outside of a few domains that you know to be 'safe', until the ad companies can provide ads that are 'safe' there is no reason to trust or allow them. Of course advertisers don't want to make sure their ads are virus/malware/cookie free as this would kill their business.
As for free content, it has always existed on the net and always will, even if things go back to just a token ring and a few BBS servers.

Yes, well, I haven't had malware of any consequence on any of the PC's I've owned since I was a child, so I think my approach is indeed more than enough. And I think I prefer the quantity and breadth of content one can find now to a 'token ring and a few BBS servers'.

You mean you haven't ever seen evidence of malware. And why would you think the approach you have used since you were a child will still continue to be valid in the future? Like I said with Kaminsky's flaw in the DNS all it takes is one subversion and your noscript is worthless. As for content, quantity != quality.

Yup. I didn't want to use AdBlock for a veeeery long time, but few days ago I snapped and installed it. I think SG is the only exception so far.

i've never had problems with IE either... just the other ones are better (except safari lol safari sucks)

Nope. I'm using adblock to hide ads, and that includes SG.
Comment has been collapsed.
does SG get anything from them being displayed or only when someone clicks?

Yeah I disable it on sites that I actually care about, so they can make some money. But I leave exceptions for youtube... they're a bit out of hand now with their advertisements.
The only sites I take off ad block is steamgifts, steampowered (does this really change anything? o_o''", nico nico douga, and that's pretty much it.

Aren't the only ads on steamgifts those ones at the bottom of the page detailing game sales on various sites?
Even with adblock on, everyone can still see those. They're hardcoded into the page.
