The series “The Notebook”, “The Proof”, and “The Third Lie” by Agota Kristof was really good. I was surprised because it was a total random buy. Also Romain Gary’s European Education is quite nice.

I only knew #1, but the rest was definitely google-able.
I can recommend you "Making History" by Stephen Fry, if you haven't read it yet of course.
It's from 1996 (good year), and it's about alternate timelines. It even won a few prizes.

I'll recommend Journey Under the Midnight Sun written by Keigo Higashino, it's a long book but worth it if you're into crime novels, kind of like Gone Girl but in Japanese style.

Hmm, based on your books:

  1. Yevgeny Zamyatin - We - Russian book that inspired Orwell's dystopian masterpiece, Cormac McCarthy - The Road, Walter M. Miller Jr. - A Canticle for Leibowitz
  2. Haven't read it, other Russian authors I've enjoyed: Vladimir Nabokov - Lolita, Fyodor Dostoyevsky - The Brothers Karamazov Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn - The Gulag Archipelago
  3. Just finished this one, great book! You should definitely read John Kennedy Toole's A Confederacy of Dunces if you haven't already. Also, Douglas Adams - A Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Terry Pratchet - Good Omens
  4. Ashamed to say I haven't read this either, so no comment =/

spot on choices, 3rd one looks like acidulous satire more like Crumb (movie) rather than mild irony of Jerome K. Jerome. and A Canticle for Leibowitz I haven't read either, jesus I need more time
Nabokov is famous abroad with Lolita, in Russia though through experiments with style ("Invitation to a Beheading"), my favourite book is still his simplest "Luzhin Defense"

my favorite book for 2017:

"The Forest of Hours" Kerstin Ekma
"The main character of the book is the troll Skord and we get to see the development of Sweden during 500 years through his eyes. With the help of a young girl he learns how to blend in among humans, but to hide the fact that he does not age, he continuously has to move away from his friends. This causes him a lot of pain and several times he returns to the Skule Mountain, in search for his soul."

Sorry if I'm too late, only today saw your discussion, and it interested me. The Master and Margarita is one of my favorite book, from other Russian authors I would like to recommend Aleksandr Grin (especially "Scarlet Sails" and "She Who Runs on the Waves"), "The Twelve Chairs" by Ilf and Petrov. I saw Oscar Wilde quote, you probably already read "The Picture of Dorian Gray", I also loved his magic tales. Also I recommend "Martin Eden", "The Sea-Wolf" by Jack London. Mark Twain books - this is the perfect satire, if you are interested. And thank you for the interesting discussion.

ty, although Grin is so well-known here I had to learn "Scarlet Sails" song at summer camp-) beautiful Wilde's fairy tales I didn't aprreciate as a kid, for a child I'd rather recommend "Silver Skates" or "Timm Tahler and Traded Laughter".
From my list of recommendations are Bernard Shaw and Gerald Durrell for British humour as well .

Thank you for recommendations, didn't hear before about Gerald Durrell, I'll try to fix it. Shaw are great writer (although still a lot of unread). "Timm Thaler", unfortunately, didn't read, only saw soviet film (and I think it doesn't quite correspond to the original book), but of course both stories are very good for a child.

Kushiel's Legacy by Jacqueline Carey. Great read if you are into alternate history/historical fantasy. I found the first trilogy to be excellent, second to be really good and have yet to read the 3rd. A coworker even got a tattoo from the book
Sorry if I took my joke too far, meant no offense. Was more meant as a warning that custom rules aren't binding, even though I would've complied.
Oh, and if you were the one that replied to my post I didn't receive it after the GA was deleted
