JOURNAL ENTRY

Thursday, June 1st, 2017

Big news today. retoid says he's leaving SG. Thank god he posted a thread, instead of just going away quietly, so I could put this in my journal.

Well, it seems clear that you wanted attention, so I gave you some.

If you ever decide to come back, check out the group "Unlucky-7". Group giveaways are how most of us win anything around here, and they are a perfect group for users who haven't won much.

Coming here each day to enter give aways that are on my wish list, meaning I only enter giveaways for games I actually want and don't spam the giveaways. Time after time, clicking enter giveaway, enter giveaway, enter giveaway, enter giveaway, enter giveaway, enter giveaway, enter giveaway, enter giveaway. I think there are just too many people here. Chances of actually winning something seem laughably low. It'd be nice to win a little here and there but oh well. It is what it is. I am just saying I am over it. Not going to spend time here anymore.

Clicking create giveaway helps a lot, since it gives you access to high level giveaways and groups, which increases your chance of winning drasticly.
Exchanging your spare bundle keys for ~ 1 major and 2 minor game each week sounds like a great deal to me.

Regardless of winning, this site has become a good source for games to purchase for me as well, be it game deals or brand new ones.

I know someone who only entered ones they knew they would play, went a while with no wins. They won eventually. Quite a few wins now. Just keep at it.

  • Of course the chances of winning something are low, but it wouldn't be quite as much as fun / rewarding if you expected to win everything =P. I can see how it might be frustrating when you see a giveaway for a game that you'd really love to play, but don't end up winning, but if you keep at it, you're bound to win again eventually!
  • Just a few pieces of advice that I've learned from my relatively short, but rewarding, experiences with SteamGifts / SteamTrades:

    1. You might already be way ahead of me, but I've found Steam's "Discovery Queues" to be a useful tool to find interesting games I previously didn't even know existed to add to my wishlist. The concept simply being that with more games on your wishlist, more titles on the "wishlist" giveaway page of SteamGifts will show up, which all obviously increase your chances of winning something! (I know that's a simple argument, but I still think it could prove useful!)
    2. Small game companies will often promote their new games by releasing a ton of free keys on the site. The SteamGifts "giveaways" home page will often highlight such giveaways at the top of the page (you can tell if it's a company-sponsored giveaway when there is a note with an absurdly large number of codes). Obviously, these mass giveaways aren't going to be for AAA-titles, and might not always be the most interesting games in the world, but I think you might find something worth playing if you check them occasionally and enter! (Not to make more "No-S**-Sherlock" comments than necessary, but obviously with lots of codes to giveaway, your chances of winning are that much higher!).
    3. It's a bit different than straight winning a game for free in a giveaway, but checkout the affiliated SteamTrades website if you haven't already done so! It's very often worth spending a few dollars here and there on interesting Game Bundles (Humble Bundle, Indie Gala, etc.), using the codes for the games that you'd want to play yourself, and then trying to find trades for the other games you're not so interested in (Activity on my page has been low for a while, but I remember enjoying the trading process almost as much as I liked playing the games I was trading for ;P). Also, if you find you have a bunch of trade items that no one seems to be interested in, that's when you can then make your own giveaway page for them here (and the cycle continues...)
    4. I see that you've already made a good amount of giveaways yourself, which is awesome, but if you keep the giveaways going, you'll continue to "level up / rank up" on SteamGifts (or whatever the correct terminology is for the process...), and you might just find that there are higher-leveled giveaways for games you have interest in that you couldn't previously enter into!
    5. Most importantly, stay lighthearted about it all. Not that I want to downplay the power / impact a giveaway can have on someone (because it can be an incredibly fun / rewarding experience for both the Giver & the Receiver), but when all is said and done, they're just video games. Sometimes, you just gotta shrug your shoulders, say "Oh well", and continue to hold onto that blissful childlike naivety that will keep you excited until the next chance of winning something!

Like someone else suggested, if you change your mind, Unlucky 7 is a pretty good group for someone new to get a few wins in

Before you leave, post on this thread: Unlucky-7. Request to join the group, you already fill all the requirements.

Be sure to give it at least some time, especially since you're only entering GA's you'd actually like to play (which is the right thing to do, even though it usually means less chances).

Without groups, you'll usually win one game per 1000 entries. Obviously the chances are worse if you only enter for most wanted games. If you want to higher your chances, join groups and your chance rises to one game per 50-100 entries, depending on what kind of group you want to be a part of.

But yeah, winning here is very mathematical. If you only enter games with 4000 entries for example, you'll win around the time you entered 4000 giveaways overall. Or not, it's still luck. But you'll win eventually. Unless you stop entering.

Also Playing Appreciated could be one of your group. If you win, you play it.
