The devs are/were students so the code for the game isn't the best. Integrated graphics cards are pretty much incompatible.

The devs said the game engine is very "heavy" (don't know the word for it)

If Magicka is giving you issues you might need to invest in a new GPU...
I know "just upgrade" is a lame answer, but it's an old game and shouldn't put much stress on a modern setup.

I suppose it's not a retro game or anything, but a game from 2 years ago isn't too new either.
Regardless, doesn't change the fact that if your PC is having trouble with a 2 year old top-down game it might be time to look into upgrades.

...Not a very well thought out answer really.
Out of all the games in my library (on a 1 year old laptop) Magicka runs the worst. Incredibly laggy!
All the rest run at 'medium' settings or better, so my laptop is clearly capable of running more demanding games... Magicka is just REALLY badly optimized.

Magicka has issues in some pcs, sometimes it has nothing to do with the specs since people with i7 and a major geforce were having the slow frame rate issue as well. Look around in paradox forums.

Quotes from paradox forums:
1)
I'm running:
Intel i7 2.8
8Gb DDR3 RAM
Geforce 295
Win 7
First areas are fine (castle and first outdoor bit) but performance beyond is unplayably choppy.
2)
They put out a patch recently thats supposed to help alot with choppy performance on high-end machines.
I did have some stutter on my machine (and it can DEFINITELY run this game no problem) but I managed to get it back to smooth 60fps by going down to Medium shadows. Still running it on 1920x1080, and now it runs smooth. High shadows used to lag.
The patch seems to have improved things though, I'm back on High shadows.
PS: if you keep searching you can find more posts.

magicka is poorly optimized but the game is still not very demanding at all considering, any pc 1gb graphics card, 3gb ram and a triple core cpu should run it. I am guessing you are on a laptop or just an old desktop?

The RAM won't affect you as much as having a real GPU.
Most laptops are stuck with an internal/integrated card.

Don't worry, magicka isn't optimized very well at all for laptop playing for some reason. According Mr Castiglia at any rate. I also have a lot of lag on my laptop. As ageofarmageddon says, having a dedicated GPU certainly helps.

This is not the worst problem for Magicka, the problem is the game is very unstable online. On multiple occasion the game crashes while loading or just on random occasions.
Also there's a lightning spell that instakills another player unless they have the forcefield up. Lightning strikes on the filed purely random and it's annoying as all hell.

We do use voice chat and some things that are said would get me banned from the net. :P Yeah, lightning was funny first few times, then it gets annoying because I have to wait for somebody to revive me and even then I have very low health and usually die quickly again.

I believe that the lightning is supposed to hit the tallest character on the screen (and if characters are same high it chooses random). Well it seems it's something among those lines

Requirements are a pentium IV and 8800 gt gpu. So your gpu is most likely the problem. Id get a nvidia geforce gt630 or gt440 graphics card and those require a 300 watt or greater psu

Since most laptops use integrated video chips rather than dedicated GPUs it's usually not possible to upgrade the GPU.

Does your laptop have multiple graphics cards? I know for a fact that mine has a intel hd graphics card as well as an nvidia card. Some indie games (including magicka) automatically select to use the intel card instead of the nvidia card. Find magicka in your steam folder on your computer (program files->steam->steamapps->common->magicka) and right click on it and go to run graphics processor and click the right one, I hope this is the case for you, magicka is a great little game!

It's a better idea to go:
Nvidia Panel -> Manage 3D settings -> Global Settings tab -> Change "Preferred Graphics Processor" from Auto-Select to High Performance NVIDIA.
This will correct similar issues in other games, and I can confirm it fixes Magicka's issue without ever needing to specify it's exe.

Not every game/application needs a high performance graphic card, I find it best to select it manually only when necessary. The whole point of having two graphic cards is to save power so the battery lasts longer on the go & maybe save a few bucks each month on your utility bill if it's always plugged in.

This won't change all applications, only ones that have 3D settings (hence the name of the panel). Apps like your browser or iTunes, etc will continue to use the integrated chip.
You can test this by setting the global to "NVIDIA" and then checking on your browser in the "program settings" tab.

I got Magicka and tested it a few days ago. I had to reduce the resolution to something around 1600x900 so it worked "smoothly". Seriously? I have no problems with Skyrim on highest settings but when I have Magicka at 1980x1080 it doesn't work almost at all. It laggs all the time and moves like in slow motion. Instead of downgrading it they should rather upgrade it so it works with better computers.

you can find your friend very easy...just create(host) online game press Shift+Tab then find him press the little arrow next to his name and then "Invite To Game" and he should be able to join your game...the Bug with the loading screens in online/coop mode is surely going to be fixed soon because before there wasn't such a bug so I think it from some of the new patches and is being fixed right now :) the game is not fail at all...yeah the graphics options are kinda fail but still is it all graphics?
