Can anyone describe the summer steam sale to a n00b? Is it better than the lunar sale?

Summer and Winter sales are the biggest sales on Steam (lots and lots discounted games), Lunar sales was a bit smaller one :) Summer and Winter sales used to have daily deals and flash sales but I suppose Steam stopped those so all you get is discounted games across the sale, not day specific prices or anything like that. Also there is usually some holiday cards / badge and some game to play.
