Mine is chat. After all these years they can't give us chat history?
Even on mobile app, which gives us the only thing close to a history for chat, it doesn't always give me notifications and I miss chat messages all the time. I only find them when I go to open a chat to write someone. Drives me crazy!

What's your biggest steam pet peeve?
(And do you have any tips for better steam chat features?)

And take this stinkin' gib too lv.1, no other restrictions

That goes the other way too. I'm always really careful, so it does get annoying when I need to wait a confirmation of whether the person's there or not to make sure that they get the key.

I think one should be safe with a history of around 10 messages up to several days. So as long as the other person doesn't feel some kind of poetic inspiration to write walls of text you'll most likely be able to successfully retrieve those last messages up to several days later.
But I agree, the current implementation is primitive at best. Even some of the first implementations of chat applications allowed persistent history. The current system is just plain stupid.

I agree for the chat issue. Especially lately there are no notifications for messages sometimes.
My biggest issue is the very problematic OSX Steam client port.

Completely agree with the chat thing.
Also, the fact that you can't access lower level card badges once you've level up your badges. How hard would that be to implement??
A chat history (that would also be saved and synced to hard drive or cloud) would be a tremendous help, though.

https://steamdb.info/sales/?min_discount=70&min_rating=0&displayOnly=Game

When you click the "Games only" filter there is an option to show dlcs for owned games. I use the above link to track sales of games which are discounted 70% or more. You can change the filtering options of course.

Hmm let me see...
The kinda underwhelming sales of nowadays. The support... oh wait, those are common big complains.
Like the chat history - i mean, theres no raging reactions about it but its pretty much a unanimous opnion.

My particular pet peeves...

-Can't filter list or detail with a single category- i have to deal with multiple entries if i tag games in more then one bucket
-Really wish i could increase text/icons in list and detail view
-WHY THE HELL IT DOESNT SAVE THUMBNAILS? I use grid view the most but goddammit, as you scroll images are loading and if you play offline... no pictures for you. Why the hell they do that? Wouldn't they save bandwith or anything like that having local thumbnails?
-How people care for emoticons when they suck? For ant-sized emoticons in chat i would be better without any.
-9 or 10 years on steam. 1.5 k games. Been buying games on the store since pre-bundle era, took part in most if not all major events...
...lvl 25.
Really? How they can attach something that means 'overall experience' in gaming as someones tier in the platform solely on crafting badges - wich i can't care? Thats just ridiculous.

Yeah, it's especially annoying when it requests admin access each time you launch the game. There's a reason I use a limited user account, d'oh.

Ditto. I wish steam would NOTE which runtimes you have already installed, and skip trying to install them again when you install a new game.

I am actually glad that steam WILL attempt to run the game if you say no to the administrative prompt. What I wish steam would do once you are done playing, or you otherwise exited, ask if the game ran properly, and if so, skip the "one time" setup the next time.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

it should only ask you that when running a new game for the first time. does it also do that afterwards?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

It's doing that pretty often on multiple startups, like 3 times during a single day.
Hell, I don't remember the game but it did "first time setup" each and every time I played it (at least in 5 times)

A bit of a tip. With the DirectX install, you can just close it and then start the game again. That makes the launcher skip the install :)
It's still annoying though.
Also, it doesn't work with installs that require a separate installer, which DirectX doesn't.

I'd say I have no problems with the whole chat thing as you can get add-ons to messengers that logs Steam chat, though I agree that Steam should have the feature.
For me it'd be the "Block all communication from user" feature. When I read "all" I'd hope that it would hide all comments, ratings (name shown when rated something), block my content so said blocked user can't view it, even block profile page for that matter. A "Total Block" thing more or less.
Also for the store I would like that you could sort by discount percentage just because it would be nice.

I've only bought a couple dollars from the Steam store since they implemented this garbage. Unfortunately, I feel like we're a vocal minority and I question the impact we make on their bottom line. It's a shame so many people (myself included) only primarily use Steam, and that GOG Galaxy multiplayer splits the community, as I'd really like to support other services more.

yes they won't care at all. but as long as they don't mess up keys, i will trade/buy them elsewhere instead of using the steam store. ┐(ツ)┌

The idea for region locking is good. Sadly they're too lazy to actually update it frequently enough to have it be fair. It's good that games are way cheaper in SA, but it's also annoying that many poorer countries in Europe are classified as the richest countries on the store.

^ Cripples in more ways than it was intended. Friends are unable to gift me anything and I can't use the sales to keep games as gifts to gift them later.

Library sorting. Why can't Valve allow us to see categories for hidden games?

Yeah, if they implemented something like Steam Library Filters in the client it would be amazing. As it is, the library sorting is rather poor.

Other than chat history (which is a big one for me), Steam could use a change (and more options) for privacy settings.
Also, people you've blocked on Steam should not be able to view your profile.

It'd be enough to log out of Steam to bypass this. You'd have to have private profile either way.

Eh, good point. Creepy the lengths someone will go to, but you're right.
More privacy settings to make particular parts of your profile private rather than the whole thing would be nice, though.

Yup.

I'd like to show my number of games and number of achievements, but not everyone should see comments under profile, what games I have etc. So ability to change privacy of every showcase would be nice.

  1. Totally bullshit game search functionality, especially when I get some of the same games on say, page 3, that were also on page 2. How can a tech company not give a shit about having a proper search function?

  2. Pulling up inventory for trades takes forever, and sometimes breaks my web browser. It's the worst when I try to trade with the Trading Card Exchange [BOT], so anything other than a Quick-Trade I have to go to the bot's Steam profile and click their trade link while in the Steam client.

  3. Speaking of inventory, why can't the client remember my settings when searching my own inventory? I find an item, turn it into gems, then have to re-enter my search parameters again. WTF?!

  4. I wish I could customize the Store page more. I don't need to know about every game recommended by people on my Friends List (no offense to my Steam Friends), especially seeing the same stuff every flipping day. It shows up in my Activity Feed, I don't need it on the Store Page.

To add on the complaints about chat: why the heck doesn't the mobile client support group chats? Not that I care about the mobile app per se, but Bitlbee Steam uses the Mobile API and I want to be able to access group chat in my IRC client.

Also, no customization of the friends feed. I'm only really interested in a couple people's stuff, many of my friends are people I've traded with or otherwise and I don't really care that they own 20 more games this week.

I contacted steam's support in regards to the chat issue, as well as some other not so insignificant issues that's been going on for months now. The response I got was that these issues were known, but they're not prioritized, and Valve is not really working on fixing them. Sounds reassuring, right?

So my biggest pet peeve with steam is that Valve does not care to fix technical issues, even when they've been known for months.

Odd, a 3h old topic and no one has mentioned family sharing yet, that I notice anyway. Is is just my own pet peeve? I can hardly believe how useless it is for actual family members. It doesn't even have to be family sharing though, just make it possible to play at least two games from the same account at the same time, damn it.

Ah, I see. Is it fixed now then?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

It's better, but not completely fixed. Not everyone experienced this issue, but it was quite wide-spread, and the steam client is still a bit unresponsive unless you (through the taskmanager) close the steam Webhelper.
Steam also experienced a bunch of other issues yesterday & today, with people losing their levels, achievements not working properly, and some people even getting their accounts set to limited (this would indicate further database issues. Steam has had major database issues for months now).

+1 on god damn chat history.

The chat in client, web and mobile is a mess.
Client has proper tracking for multiple discussions (notifications) and group chat, but no history.
Web has proper tracking, no history, no group chat
Mobile chat has history (Has to be on and connected for that) but shit tracking (you don't see in-discussion if someone else writes to you), no group chat.
There isn't even a bloody option at groups to organize them, not even alphabetical.
There is a downvote button on the activity feed that does nothing / reloads the page...
STILL NO WAY TO SUBSCRIBE TO GROUP NOTIFICATIONS (one of the most ridiculously missing feature)
Search option is broken in friends window's group checker
Search engine seems to be more optimized around top-sellers than actual, 100% accurate game names.
Still no way to exclude owned games from searches. Like they want to make buying new games harder...
