they give it for free to ppl who already own previous version? Not forcing them to buy new one, offering shitty discounts for previous owners or selling them "Enhanced Edition upgrade"? Hell - now I love them even more! Everyone who still don't have D:OS and enjoy oldschool RPGs go and buy it and support awesome developer! ;> For me D:OS was the best game I played in 2014 :D:

I wonder if future owners of either original or enhanced version will still get both? the Vanishing of Ethan Carter guys did that, and it's the nicest solution.

I think it's unlikely since they plan on selling it. With The Vanishing of Ethan Carter and Wasteland 2 they aren't selling the new versions just adding them to the original package.

Either way I don't think there's been a single case where buyers of a new version also got the original.

They could stop selling the old version and instead package it with the new one :-) But I guess there won't really be a reason to play the old one...

Achievements, time already sunk into it, save incompatibility. Whilst I can see why new users would want the newer version there's almost no reason to stop selling the original.

What I was saying though is whilst old versions getting the new one free is quite common the opposite just doesn't happen.

I guess I'll have to pay people for playing those games for me, too much backlog ._. .
But it's cool to see that developers give these versions away for free. I should really give those games a try, just because of that.
But right now I don't feel like learning the rulesets of those round-based tactics game .... so many skills and stuff to look at.
I need games for the feeble-minded.

The question I have now is if I go and buy a retail copy of the original game (since it has been removed from the store) will I get the Enhanced Edition as well, or would I have had to have the original version in place this morning when they first released the Enhanced Edition? They've also removed the DLC for the original game so there's no way to get it now except via the new version.

I want the original one, I just thought they were going to keep both versions of the game for sale once the new one released (like Dark Souls II). This one seems to contain the original game with both DLCs, if the picture is accurate. The reviews below also state it contains a key to activate it with Steam. So if I buy this I should get the original game and DLC with Steam. Maybe I'll ask the developer if it will still drop the new version upon activation.

So difficult... :)

Per current information on steamdb.info all subscriptions, which include original version, include Enhanced Edition too.
Also there are separate subscriptions for Enhanced Edition, which don't include original version - you will get such subscription, if you buy Enhanced Edition from steam store.
Note: subscriptions can be changed later, so information is correct only for moment of writing.

I contacted their support to ask, and although no one has answered me, they have now added this to their site:

Who gets the PC or Mac version of the Enhanced Edition for free?
Anyone who bought Divinity: Original Sin on Steam or GOG, and anyone who got a Steam/GOG key from a retail box or Humble Bundle. Note that this offer will only be available if you bought Divinity: Original Sin before the Enhanced Edition is released.

This is too bad.

I think you will get both D:OS and D:OSEE in your library. That's what they did with Divinity 2: Dragon Knight Saga. Buying one meant the other came with it and they are listed separately in your library.

Oh i thought you were asking if upon purchasing D:OSEE you would get the original D:OS which is why I gave the response I did. Yeah, too bad about their response.

Oh, I see what you were saying. I'd be more than happy if upon buying the Enhanced Edition the original one unlocked with it. In fact, that would be much simpler than buying a retail original and hoping the new one unlocked. :)

  • You won't get original, if you buy Enhanced Edition
  • You will get both, if you buy original version

What they say in your quote above is that original version was replaced by Enhanced Edition in official stores (at least steam and gog), so you are unable to get original version (with free copy of Enhanced Edition included) from such stores any longer. However, there are many other sites, resellers, traders, etc. So, if you find steam key or gift for original version, you will get both versions after activation.

They are not able to remove it from old keys/gifts, because in that case it will be removed from accounts of users, who activated the same keys/gifts before. There are 2 approaches in such situation to not affect previous customers: 1. discontinue old version (as they did) 2. generate new type of keys/gifts (using new subscriptions) and sell that keys/gifts instead of old ones. I cannot say much about gog, but steam keys/gifts work in such way.

Ohhhh, okay. Well if that's the case, that's awesome! It makes sense how you say it as well. They wouldn't know which keys are still outstanding in retail packages, etc. Thank you for all your explanations and help. :)

I've been playing the enhanced edition a lot today, it brings so many improvements. The 8,000 lines of voiced dialogue and controller support really stand out. It plays flawlessly on my steam link.

Yeah, I've had a good time with it so far. I started it with mouse and keyboard but switched over to gamepad last night and it is playing through really well so far!
