Making a horror film and been watching a shit load of movies recently for some ideas when I thought SG will help me! What scares you the most? Will be sure to share the film with you guys when it's done (may take a few months), thanks :)

Your best call would be a mockumentary, for reference go and see these 2 movies: Noroi and Lame Mungo. They both left me unwanting to sleep, there are some good ideas in there.

With my budget this is the path I'm having to make, which isn't bad because I've always loved the idea but haven't seen it pulled off that well. Have bookmarked both films and im guessing lame mungo is lake mungo haha, thank you

Another mockumentary I highly recommend is "Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon". It's an intelligent, funny comedy-horror.

As stupid as it sounds i only have one real phobia and that is little girls, i couldnt think of anything personally scarier than a playground or a nursery

We've all got it... little children and their giggles in ANY movie are scary... you just know something's going to happen, it became cliché.

Ive never been more scared than when i saw the twin girls from the shining, but even irl they scare me. I went to watch my girlfriend perform in her dance school and the show started with a performance from the toddler group, there was no escape from it all, my heart was beating so fast..

I think that the following frightens people on this site:

  • Leechers
  • Begging
  • Not getting any 'thanks' posts on a giveaway
  • Secret of the Magic Crystals

Hopefully others will help fill this list so you'll be able to make a really good horror movie.

  • Little girls
  • Cramped spaces like in a cave/mine, nowhere to run, possible chance of getting physically stuck
  • Mirrors / Dark windows

You should take the first part of ''Jeepers Creepers'' as an example.
Modern horror movies needs to be like this.

I like the character development and the subtle (and not so subtle) hints that something bad is coming their way, thank you

Make them and the viewers have the idea that light, weapons, open areas, saferooms or whatever things equal safety, then disprove all of it.
Suggest that they are better off by trying to survive in situations they would normally never get into, therefore having a logical reason why the characters put themselves into disadvantage against whatever danger is out for them.
Make sure that they are insignificant enough that they can't really do anything to "solve the problem", and the only way for them is to be smart and lucky enough to hide from it as long as they can, probably for the rest of their lives.

I find that these ideas usually work (constant reason to fear, disproving safety, having to risk putting yourself into disadvantage in order to "escape").

I love horror flicks. The hack and slash stuff doesn't impress me. I like the paranormal aspects because although these movies are dramatic, true paranormal activity does exist. That's what makes it scary. Wonder how many people here have had those unexplainable things happen to them... Anyway, I thought Silence of the Lambs was well done. I like the funny horror movies like House with William Katt. The Birds is a classic, as well as the other Hitchcock movies. I admit to liking the Scream movies. Whatever style you chose to for your movie, just remember this - I Know What You Did Last Summer....bwaa-ha-ha (evil laugh) Good luck with your movie. If it's really good...my nephew has a production company in California.

Audition. KillerJuan77 already mentioned it but he posted such a big list of names that it's probably good to mention it again. It begins very slow but the longer it gets the more strange things happen. Finally the slow pace of the beginning makes the last third of the movie more horryfying than it already is because of the harsh contrast. Don't read too much about it before watching, though, it could spoil some of the twists.

While not really being horror-movies some David Lynch movies are scary as hell. Most notably: Lost Highway, Eraserhead, Blue Velvet and Inland Empire. His TV-series Twin Peaks contains some horrorfying scenes, too, as well as a lot to laugh about and many sad and/or weird scenes; not really horror, but you should watch it if you didn't already. One of the best TV-Series ever made.

And I'm wondering that it's not mentioned already: The Hellraiser movies. I would in fact sort them into the 'Gore category' but they belong to the better ones in that category and the horror doesn't only come from it.

Audition has been added to my watch list and thank you for not ruining anything, even little things count as spoilers to me. Big fan of David Lynch! Been a bit put off from seeing Hellraiser films because as you said they are in the gore category and I'm not interested in those types but maybe I should have a deeper look into them. Thank you
