Pop culture references in video games, that is.

I'm playing Manhunter these days and I stumbled upon this reference about Arrested Development in one quest. I also have one for Initial D from Forza Horizon 5 and one time I found Conan O'Brien in Death Stranding

What do you have? Have you taken a screenshot that references some TV show in one of your video games, a movie, a person, or anything like that? Post them here

I TOLD YOU! THERE'S ALWAYS MONEY IN THE BANANA STAND.

Ahh 😄 good memories!
I already had those prepared from an ancient giveway thread so why not.
You can therefore ignore the scribbled letters on the whiteboard 😉

i dont got a screenshot but i remember in the game shadows of the damned, you went into the cabin from evil dead and a zombie attacked from the cellar.

was it really Conan O'Brien in that walking simulator interactive movie or did it just look like him? like a cameo or whatever

It was just a cameo. Conan has been playing video games enough that people wanted to include him.

it would of been cool if Conan O'Brien was an easter egg but that was just the result of hype factories disguising adverts as entertainment.
that game would of been so cool if it was a game. great movie though.

i know that i know more pop culture references in games but i just cant think of a good 1 right now...

Fallout 2 have a bunch.
a
BUNCH

Its like over 300 or more, its insane.
From Monty Python and flinstones to 2001 space odyssey, goonies, hulk...

Some are subtle. Some obvious. Some got mixed with the lore (like the drug mentat, a reference to dune`s mentats)
...but some made up entire events and maps, like the Cafe of Broken Dreams...

And some they even made models, wich wasnt as simple or easy to implement as nowadays

and heres a entire list (probably complete)
list

Its one of my favorite games of all time (once upon a time it was THE top game for me)
I was part of a forum entirely around its fandom and we spent years scraping the game for all tid bits... but i guess by now the community probably got then all

Not surprising, bethesda also tried in fallout 3 (not sure of 4, didnt played it) but New Vegas was made by obsidian...
...and theyre like half of the old Black Isle studios (the creators of fallout). Same folk, same humour.

Also the holy hand grenades is a double reference: theyre also in fallout 2.
One of the few references that was an item and a powerful one at that, one of the most famous fallout 2 itens, with ludicrous damage

I was surprised Chris Avelone (designer of New Vegas) did that homage, during fallout 2 development the team was split between serious lore and jokes- and Chris advocated for a more serious tone.
And it shows- New Vegas Holy Hand Grenades are realistic, graffited over.

It only appears if you turn on silly mode with choosing the Wild Wasteland trait at the start. :)
That trait was the solution for "serious or not" that caused issues with 2.

Oh yes i forgot about that! Probably because i always turned it on lol

I mean, i love Avelones ideas and lore since the fallout bible but... i grew up playing and replaying fallout 2, i couldnt have a sequel without some random humour like that lol

I don't own It but "Kingdom Rush" has some (or many) famous movie lines. "Power, unlimited power" It's one of them.
Also, when I checked some S.W.I.N.E HD Remaster gameplay I saw one of the bomber pilots screaming "Yippee Kai Yay".

Regional issues?

There's no "add to cart" option. Not sure but seems like Rockstar bought the rights, you can imagine what's next. Things in Remedy are not that well I guess.

It adds to cart for me without any issue (EU), hence I thought it could be regional differences.

You´re the second person that tells me this. I thought It was a global deal by the time.
"Max Payne titles were removed on Steam in multiple regions on November 4, and are no longer available in several places including Asia, and Latin America. https://screenrant.com/max-payne-remaster-rumors-original-games-vanish/
It´s one of those "I should have" situations, game was pretty cheap on sale.
Can´t wait to see the new price for the remastered bundle :P

I've got a few.

I was playing Metal Gear Solid V and I came across 2 Russian soldiers talking about the book 1984. They had an interesting view on it. For those that don't know, 1984 is about an absolutely totalitarian state where citizens are constantly monitored, have no privacy, are constantly fed propaganda, and independent thinking is illegal.

In Regions of Ruin you play as a dwarf, at one point you talk to another dwarf who's in a "strange mood" and is babbling about menacing spikes and becoming a legend. A reference to the game Dwarf Fortress, where dwarves ocasionally get obsessed with making a special item, which will often have "it menaces with spikes of <material>" in its description, and will get legendary skill in crafting on completion. I love DF and found that reference amusing.

In Do Not Feed The Monkeys, you are tasked with observing various people in their daily lives. One of them is a German immigrant who has troubling memories of his past. He occasionally talks about how he faked a suicide in a bunker.

Haven't a screenshot, but in Doom 2016 if you die in the molten metal you give a thumbs up as you slip under (a la Terminator 2).

I still remember the WC3 cheats, some of which were references to movies. Not gonna mention all, but here's a few:

thereisnospoon - abilities don't spend mana - The Matrix
pointbreak - no food limit - Point Break
iseedeadpeople - remove Fog of War - The Sixth Sense
thedudeabides - no cooldown on abilities - The Big Lebowski
whosyourdaddy - Invincible units that kill everything in one shot - Kindergarten Cop

Then there's Ace Attorney, which references pop culture, like the clown from Turnabout Big Top (3rd case, second game, Justice For All) mentioning The Prince of Bel-Air or A-Team, among many, many others.
