Lots of people seem to be abusing the fact that the train sim games are 90% off, i.e. spending 3 or 4 quid to inflate their contributor level.

I don't think this is very fair, the train sim games need tonining down, no way are they currently worth 35/72p.
I mean over $71 for £4.79 spend? Come on.. :/

A bit of a temporary measure perhaps - but then again, we do this with every sale...

So it isn't breaking any rules? Seems crap that someone can pay a fiver and almost overtake me when I've contributed five games so far.

I could join the club and give out a copy as well but I dunno, it feels dirty somehow.

what rule would it possibly break? Yea, there are no rules on Steamgifts about giving away games that are on sale........

Well part of the reason I am confused is I got "told off" for giving out bastion, worked out that it cost me approx £3.00 (going by bundle cost divided by no of games). Yes, I got told I was breaking rules, for giving away a game that was woth a whopping $15 contribs. Oh no! I gave away a game!

Yet what's happening here is ok? $75 for under £5 spend? ;/
It's such a massive contradiction.

I would rather there were no rules then I wouldn't be complaining about this hypocrisy in the first place.

Eh, Nuclear Dawn cost me a fiver if I recall, bought it ages ago. And the contrib it gives is only $15 so not really seeing your point. Most games here do give more dollars than spend yes, but here we have a massive discrepancy.

Even if you consider nuclear dawn was a free copy, it wasn't technically free, I got it because I paid for the game. So it's actual value is debatable, and in either case still nowhere near as big a discrepancy as the choo choo games.

So... you got Nuclear Dawn for 5 Dollars/Euro, and it gives 15 to contrib?
And you got two copies for the price of one?

Again, double standards much?

Quid = English pound

Roughly 8 dollars, half it for 4.

4 dollars is just about 74% off $15
.. I've already said I have no qualms with the 75% or so sales. So again, once more, I am not seeing your point. I raised a point specifically about a 90% off deal.

However, you never specified in which currency you paid for Nuclear Dawn. My point still stands.

I agree i also dont think someone should be allowed to spend 50$ for a 300$ pack and get a 300$ contributor level, i wish there was a way to check the date at which you purchased the gift, and if any discounts for that game existed during that day, give that amount to the contributor while making the entry cot, the price of the original game. But that will never happen and that we will just have to accept that in life, kinda sucks.

What about the developers of Faerie Solitaire and Dwarfs - they both got a huge contribution value for giving away 1,000s of copies of their games, should that not count since they didn't spend any money on it? Is that insane?

oh here we go. People are going to bitch about people taking advantage for the sale. You do know steam runs daily sales that can be up to 75% off the price right? So you could do this year round and take advantage of the system. OHNOEZ PEOPLE GIVING AWAY FREE GAMES IS SO BAD AND IF SOMEONE ELSE GET MY GAME ILL CRY MYSELF TO SLEEP!

Permalink

Exactly- that's what I do, take advantage of sales.

If it weren't for sales I would almost never give away games.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Actually I'm posting about it because it's a 90% one, a rare thing indeed in the sales.

I don't care about the 75% ones, they're normal.

I'm sure you're right though, there's no problem here, we won't be seeing people jump up and overtake genuine contributors, nor will we see a page filled with trains tomorrow.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I'm sorry but if SG didn't see this coming I would be surprised. It's not like the sale wasn't the talk of the town for over a month. I could easily pick up a few of the bundles and give them away in a few months and play it like I didn't buy them during the sale. This is a (FIRST WORLD)problem you can't avoid in the current system.

This is by far one of the stupidest threads i've seen. This whole website is about giving away games and people try to save a bit of money and contribute to this community with games that go on sale and you can't recognize that no one on this website is required to giveaway games.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I think you're missing the point, it's not about the principle of buy things in a sale to gift them (which yes, we all do), it's about the fact this particular one (due to 90% off) is too high a discrepancy, i.e. $75 is way too much for spending 5 quid.

I don't care anymore though, I'll buy two or three copies tomororow and jump on the bandwagon if nothing is done about it.

I can sort of understand where youre coming from but its not that whole big of a deal. Its not as bad as free keys for games where people get a higher value for free games. They still have to contribute a bit

Actually I'm all for letting people gift whatever they want, even indie stuff, but that's for a seperate discussion.

My main sentiment for this post is that this particular deal, because of the unusually large discount, devalues the community members who have earned their contributor score through harder (or, more expensive) means.

So we should also do something about localized prices like Russian sales? You know then usually can get a game for half the current US price. That means they are cheating?

people normally only give away things on sale to gain more contribution points. buying things on sale and giving away for full price is the thing to do on steamgifts! duh...

Comment has been collapsed.

While it seems terribly selfish to give out games for something as trivial as raising contributor level, it seems just as terribly selfish to take offense at your contributor level being lessened by this somehow. I thought the whole point was people giving away games because they're nice people? So what if the system's a little inaccurate, people still get free games at the end of the day. And I highly doubt there isn't a vast number of giveaways created here from steam sales.

Take advantage yourself and inflate your own contributor level.

This is an arms race right now.

Permalink

What I can say to you is that this is LEGIT, unlike the bundlers that loko hates. And decreasing the value of it now is just plain stupid to do cause it will make new gifters think twice if they want to give, hence having less giveaways on the site. Burn for that if that's what you're aiming for.
