Don't be so bloody ridiculous. They'll just remove the game. They can't ban people for not knowing where every single key came from and whether it's legal or not.

i know 3 people who got banned for using unlegal key
its just a matter of time if the key is exploited

You should have asked where that key came from. If you traded it from a russian then key is probably exploited or region restricted.

I also traded for a Bulgarian Dead Island key, yesterday. It redeemed as Dead Island(Eastern European). Seems a bit sketchy, but who knows? Maybe some Bulgarian retailer just had a really good bargain. Either way I doubt it will get my entire account disabled, they'll just remove the game if it is not a legal key.

Pulsar are the only and biggest game retailers bg together with ozone.bg
Half of my games are from there... They are pretty legit.

I dont see why it should be illegal. I mean in Estonia there is website called GamePood, they sell Russian retail versions of MW3, BF3 for about 18 euros and everything works fine. Nobody is going to ban you for that. And yes i dont have to play in Russian because i can choose what ever language i like. Also Steam have no rights to ban you for that, because maybe you live in America but you are actually Russian, Bulgarian or what-so-ever.

The only way to find out is to contact Valve. We don't know if it's legal or not unless you post it here, which you won't unless you want your game registered to MY account.

Don't do that. Steam Support is incredibly worthless. I was in the exact same position and they told me the key was illegal. Please note that they told me that first thing when my question was only "I was given a key and I am unsure if it was obtained from a legal source. If I give you the key, can you tell me if it's safe for me to use it?".
I guess the alternative would be that Steam Support is psychic and they can sense keys I haven't even told them.

Could have just been a bad day for them. I've contacted SS a few times, never about a key, but only one of those times was slow in responding and only one was a bad response.

Of course they say it's illegal, because it's not bought from Steam store :D

If you don't want to be afraid if a key is stolen or not, then simply purchase the game via an authorized reseller or Steam itself. If you buy it outside of the system, then Steam Support isn't going to help you. If you had any doubt about the key, why did you even purchase it in the first place? Support's answer in your scenario is entirely appropriate,

Also note you could be the criminal trying to 'deduce' whether your crime has been detected yet. Thus why give such a person any other information. A 'legitimiate' user is going to dump the key and buy the game via an appropriate channel. The criminal is simply going to assume the key is compromoised and move on. It's basically like a criminal calling a bank and asking if they've noticed the $100 missing from the till yet.

Worse thing that could happen is the game gets removed from your account. Steam won't ban you for activating a key, especially since those eastern europe Dead Island keys don't require VPN to activate. I've bought one for 10$ months ago and still have the game.

Seems like overkill for them to ban your whole account, I would fight that if it happened to me...

I've seen people posting pages of these keys recently. Only a matter of time before they get revoked.
