Do you like mindless RPGs that allow you to slay countless zombies (usually with melee weapons)? Or do you prefer damn good shooters with engaging stories that might be a bit outdated in terms of mechanics? If it matters, said shooter is considered one of the greatest games of all time.
Edit: I sold Half-Life 2 short in this post, but I don't have the time to describe exactly how great that game is, but basically, this is the difference between: Are you looking for something fun just to pass the time, or are you looking for an experience that for years you'll look back on fondly?

Please do not kill zombies :'(
Go with Half-Life 2, it is far better on the environment.

HL1, Opposing Forces and Blue Shift. If you have played those then get HL2, then the episodes.
Dead Island is good, but Dying Light is superior in every way so just pick that one up when it goes on sale.

Dead Island at this point is not really worth it, especially if you dont have friends to play coop with

Half-Life 2, because Valve/Gaben get a bigger cut of your money so they can eat more junk food. And it's a better game.

Really????!!!!!!!! It's not even a contest. Half Life 2 is one of the best FPS games in HISTORY. In fact, it was the very best until the second FPS revolution of 2007 when S.T.A.L.K.E.R and Bioshock came out. They have both since surpassed it because of their superior graphics atmosphere, story, enemy variety and much superior AI, better gun-play and especially story and storytelling. But Half Life 2 still remains the best FPS game-play-wise, because it features the best environment and physics related combat (even better than something like Bulletstorm where you throw people into giant cacti by kicking them in the face) and because of some of the best puzzles you'll see outside an adventure or puzzle game, possibly surpassed in that area only by the original PoP trilogy. Not to mention genius designed levels such as the excellent zombie infested town of Ravenholm, easily worth more than everything Dead Island has to offer.
It only suffers in the enemy department: not particularly varied (especially compared to Doom 3, for example) and with a less than ideal AI (downright dreadful compared to The Replica troops from F.E.A.R). But this was 2004, you can't expect everything to be peachy and smelling like roses. Not even Bioshock is perfect and that really is the best FPS of all time.

You really should. It's a game where you can do all sorts of really sadistic things to your enemies,. mentioned kickign them into giant cacti or iron spikes, but how does shooting them in the balls sound? It makes them drop on their knees and beg for mercy, at which opoint you can go kick them in the face and thus rip their heads off their shoulders(don't ask me how that works?). Also, not only can you do tings like these, but you SHOULD. The game actively encourages you to do these things by giving them funny and witty, but often sick and demented names and repeating them on screen for your pleasure every time(throwing one in a cactus, for instance, is called "pricked"). It also rewards you with points, which you can spend on buying ammo.

The answer is so easy: Half-Life 2 is a must-have masterpiece.

(If I choose dead island I will buy it from G2A .com for 5 bucks)
